Abstract

This book analyzes the possibilities for effective global governance of science in Europe, India and China. Authors from the three regions join forces to explore how ethical concerns over new technologies can be incorporated into global science and technology policies. The first chapter introduces the topic, offering a global perspective on embedding ethics in science and technology policy. Chapter Two compares the institutionalization of ethical debates in science, technology and innovation policy in three important regions: Europe, India and China. The third chapter explores public perceptions of science and technology in these same three regions. Chapter Four discusses public engagement in the governance of science and technology, and Chapter Five reviews science and technology governance and European values. The sixth chapter describes and analyzes values demonstrated in the constitution of the People’s Republic of China. Chapter Seven describes emerging evidence from India on the uses of science and technology for socio-economic development, and the quest for inclusive growth. In Chapter Eight, the authors propose a comparative framework for studying global ethics in science and technology. The following three chapters offer case studies and analysis of three emerging industries in India, China and Europe: new food technologies, nanotechnology and synthetic biology. Chapter 12 gathers all these threads for a comprehensive discussion on incorporating ethics into science and technology policy. The analysis is undertaken against the backdrop of different value systems and varying levels of public perception of risks and benefits. The book introduces a common analytical framework for the comparative discussion of ethics at the international level. The authors offer policy recommendations for effective collaboration among the three regions, to promote responsible governance in science and technology and a common analytical perspective in ethics.

Abstract

Polymer solar cells can be produced by a continuous low cost coating and drying process. This work details a specialized experimental set-up to enable large scale roll to roll processing. Material properties such as surface energy, surface tension, and viscosity are presented and modelled. The impact of coating method, as well as process parameters (e.g. coating speed, shear rate, solvent composition) on process stability and film properties, is discussed.

Abstract

The present study addresses the combination of low-temperature Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) and hydrocarbon modification reactions (hydroprocessing) in one reactor. The objective of the present investigation was to study the influence of CO during hydroprocessing reactions of hydrocarbon model compounds on two different bifunctional catalysts. In addition, the influence of the catalyst-bed configuration for the combination FTS and hydrocarbon reactions was investigated.

Abstract

This book recognizes the career of Professor Emeritus Calvin H. Bartholomew, who celebrated his 75th birthday in 2018, and his contributions to the science and engineering of heterogeneous catalysis, a field which improves daily life in countless, but often unrecognized ways. Dr. Bartholomew is an eminent researcher, an outstanding educator, mentor, and friend. The nine chapters comprising the book were written by former students, collaborators, colleagues, and respected peers. Chapters cover supported iron Fischer–-Tropsch catalysts, a spectroscopic study of iron-based water gas shift catalysts, nickel catalysts both for (dry) methane reforming with associated carbon deactivation and carbon dioxide methanation, a methanol steam reforming catalyst, cobalt oxide on niobia catalysts for environmental applications, palladium catalysts supported on titania for hydrogen peroxide synthesis, methane combustion catalyst stability, and chiral catalyst deactivation. In summary, this book covers much of the breadth and points to the depth of Professor Bartholomew’s illustrious career. We thank him for his kind example and honor him for his lasting contributions.

Abstract

Continuous casting is an industrial process whereby molten metal is solidified into a semi-finished billet, bloom, or slab for subsequent rolling in finishing mills; it is the most frequently used process to cast not only steel, but also aluminium and copper alloys. Since its widespread introduction for steel in the 1950s, it has evolved to achieve improved yield, quality, productivity and cost efficiency. It allows lower-cost production of metal sections with better quality, due to the inherently lower costs of continuous, standardized production of a product, as well as providing increased control over the process through automation. Nevertheless, challenges remain and new ones appear, as ways are sought to minimize casting defects and to cast alloys that could originally only be cast via other means. This Special Issue of the journal ""Metals"" consists of 14 research articles that cover many aspects of experimental work and theoretical modelling related to the ongoing development of continuous casting processes.

Abstract

We can find petroleum based products all around us. This book deals with some important topics related to petroleum such as its chemical composition and stability. It is well-known that the chemical composition of crude oil differs according to the site of production, and its grade varies from waxy to asphaltenic crude. Both of them are refined to produce different products. The stability of crude oil on aging and transportation is governed by several factors and these factors are included within this book. The application properties and the final coating properties of waterborne polymer dispersions are poor compared to the ones of polymer solutions with organic solvents. This is expressed by a short open time and by inhomogeneities and defects that are visible in the final dry coating.Aim of this work is an investigation and discussion of the different aspects that are responsible for the poor application and coating properties of aqueous latex dispersions by experiments and model calculations.

Abstract

The aim of the present work is the mathematical modeling of solid bowl centrifuges for the dynamic simulation of separation processes in real time. The developed compartment model couples the residence time behavior with the material properties and thus allows a time and space-resolved simulation for solid bowl centrifuges. The profound insights into the separation process open up not only a better design, but also new fields of application such as the dynamic flowchart simulation.

Abstract

In dieser Arbeit wurde der Taylor-Couette Reaktor hinsichtlich seiner Anwendbarkeit im kontinuierlichen Polymerherstellungsprozess des PMMA grundlegend charakterisiert. Es wurde der Einfluss der Vermischung auf ein polymerisierendes Reaktionssystem, bei dem es im kontinuierlichen Prozess zum Viskositätsanstieg kommt, untersucht. Die Variation der Prozessbedingungen und die Modellierung des Ablaufs der Polymerisationsreaktion stellen die Kernthemen dieser Arbeit dar.
