Abstract

The Doctoral School for Theatre and Performing Arts and the Research Centre of The Faculty of Theatre at the George Enescu National University of Arts in Iaşi, having the mission of promoting the contribution of personalities in the area of theatre research and creating contexts for sharing their expertise with the doctoral students and young graduates, have proposed holding annual academic meetings. Starting with 2015, these meetings were at first organized as National Symposiums, and, since 2018, they are held as International Conferences. Our purpose is that of rekindling the dialogue between theoreticians and practitioners in our country, at European level and not only.Each year, the participants’ contributions were gathered in the pages of consistent volumes that have been indexed on international databases, so that their ideas and information can go further than the context of these meetings. Aims and Scope: - promoting the results of theatre research at national and international level- promoting young researchers- passing the dialogue between theatre theoreticians and practitioners to the wide audience- the continuous discovery of new ways to innovate stage practice, and the revitalization of theoretical resources- creating teams of theatre researchers, professors and doctoral students, theoreticians and theatre practitioners- following the transdisciplinary directions between theatre and connected areas: literature, film, music, philosophy, anthropology, sociology, etc.

Abstract

Actors and the Art of Performance: Under Exposure combines the author's two main biographical paths: her professional commitment to the fields of both theatre and philosophy. The art of acting on stage is analysed here not only from the theoretical perspective of a spectator, but also from the perspective of the actor. The author draws on her experience as both a theatre actor and a university professor whose teachings in the art of acting rely heavily on her own experience and also on her philosophical knowledge. The book is unique not only in terms of its content but also in terms of its style. Written in a multiplicity of voices, the text oscillates between philosophical reasoning and narrative forms of writing, including micro-narratives, fables, parables, and inter alia by Carroll, Hoffmann and Kleist. Hence the book claims that a trans-disciplinary dialogue between the art of acting and the art of philosophical thinking calls for an aesthetical research that questions and begins to seek alternatives to traditionally established and ingrained formats of philosophy. ;

Abstract

How do spectators become emotionally involved in cinema? Starting from this question, the book suggests an original view about a critical period in United States film history. In a detailed analysis of individual films, an image emerges of a complex interplay between three affective modes – suspense, paranoia, and melancholy – which draw the spectators to reflect in unique ways about contradictions in their own feelings.

Abstract

Abstract

This book treats the spectacular rise in life expectancy during the last three centuries. It is the first study to bring together both published and unpublished material about the history of the health of Belgian men and women and to analyze it critically. Isabelle Devos studies the mechanisms of the historic fall in the death rate in an original manner and answers the question why research on the causes of this decline has not progressed faster. While the discipline of historical demography orients the first part of her book, the discipline of historical epidemiology provides the perspective taken in the second part, in which the role of insects as spreaders of disease is explored. Essential in her study is the importance of local medical practitioners who already at the end of the Ancien Régime warned of the dangers present in the environment. Their ‘ecological’ thinking created a consciousness that was decisive for the further development of healthcare.

Abstract

The Altering Eye covers a "golden age" of international cinema from the end of WWII through to the New German Cinema of the 1970s. Combining historical, political, and textual analysis, Kolker develops a pattern of cinematic invention and experimentation from neorealism through the modernist interventions of Jean-Luc Godard and Rainer Maria Fassbinder, focusing along the way on such major figures as Luis Buñuel, Joseph Losey, the Brazilian director Glauber Rocha, and the work of major Cuban filmmakers. Kolker’s book has become a much quoted classic in the field of film studies providing essential reading for anybody interested in understanding the history of European and international cinema. This new and revised edition includes a substantive new Preface by the author and an updated Bibliography.

Abstract

This new edition of Núñez’s Anthropocosmic Theatre contains the text of the original English translation plus additional contributions from Núñez and others. In part one, Núñez traces his researches in Nahuatlan, Tibetan and western theatre, to arrive at his design for a theatre of the human in the cosmos. Part Two explores how this work has developed, during the last three decades, into an approach to performance training and production that uniquely combines ritual and contemplative influences. New and previously untranslated writing from Núñez presents his idiosyncratic view of an awakened and expansive role for theatre today.
