Abstract

Leading publishers and observers of the science publishing scene comment in essay form on key developments over the past century. The scale of the global research effort and its industrial organisation have resulted in substantial increases in the published volume, as well as new techniques for its handling. The former languages of science communication, like Latin and German, have given way to English. The domination of European science before WWII has been followed by large efforts in North America and the Far East. The roots of the National Library of Medicine lie in the US Army medical library, the US War effort gave rise to hypertext, and the US defense reaction to the Soviet Sputnik resulted in the Internet. The European invention of the Web has also changed the science publishing scene in the past five years. Some characteristic publishing enterprises, commercial and society owned, are described in a series of articles. These are followed by analysis of recent developments and possible changes to come. Functions of publishers, librarians and agents are brought into context. The future of publishing is currently being debated on open channels, while the historical dimension and professional input are sometimes lacking.

Abstract

In today’s digital age, online and mobile advertising are of growing importance, with advertising no longer bound to the traditional media industry. Although the advertising industry still has broader access to the different measures and channels, users and consumers today have more possibilities topublish, get informed or communicate – to “co-create” –, and toreach a bigger audience. There is a good chance thus that users and consumers are better informed about the objectives and persuasive tricks of the advertising industry than ever before. At the same time, advertisers can inform about products and services without the limitations of time and place faced by traditional mass media. But will there really be a time when advertisers and consumers have equal power, or does tracking users online and offline lead to a situation where advertisers have more information about the consumers than ever before? The volume discusses these questionsand related issues.

Abstract

Abstract

The stereotypical image of quiet, dusty rooms with hushing librarians does not ring true for contemporary research libraries. On the contrary, libraries are often at the forefront of technological development. As they open up to new activities and take on new responsibilities, patrons use libraries in new ways. Increased openness is a common denominator of these transitions. At the same time, there is an ambiguity attached to the celebration of “openness” as an indisputable good, an ambiguity resonating throughout this book. The nine chapters explore the changes that are taking place from different disciplinary and methodological perspectives. In the course of the book, we learn about dilemmas created by the digitalisation of journals and books, the legitimation work of the National Library of Norway, the problematic position of “minority sources” in national collections, writing centres in research libraries, interdisciplinarity that librarians employ in their teaching, the university library as physical place, the role of the library’s atmosphere in attuning students to self-discipline, and about the library as an arena for comfort and support. The Open Library will be valuable for anyone interested in the many changes that are taking place in research libraries, and how these processes affect and are affected by the broader transitions in the higher-education sector, and in cultural and knowledge policies.
