Abstract

Exploited for requirements of defence, navigation, transport, irrigation, and the powering of mills, water has progressively diminished in importance to the extent that the relations between the city, the territory and the water systems have now greatly deteriorated. This book proposes to retrace the nature of the relations between water and the urban landscape, interpreting the shifting of the relations through images. It also analyses the use of water in contemporary landscape design, identifying the conceptual and compositional tools proper to landscape design which can inform and guide future planning.

Abstract

The overall objective of this Special Issue is to improve knowledge on developing and using advanced simulation tools in water supply and distribution systems. The final aim is to propose a suitable framework supporting insightful hydraulic mechanisms to help the decision-making processes of water utility managers and practitioners. Contributions to this Special Issue, exploring new research avenues on urban hydraulics and hydroinformatics, will be of great value for both Academia and those water utility stakeholders. On top of this, important social benefits are expected from a number of research objectives that ultimately aim to guarantee a regular supply of clean water at the pressure and quality required at the network consumption points. These objectives include a wide spectrum of subjects, such as demand monitoring and forecasting; network sectorisation; innovative tools for water resources management; leakage detection; system maintenance; transient control; and consumer satisfaction assessment, among others.

Abstract

Abstract

Heat treatment generally induces structural changes of fish muscle and loss of nutrients. Depending on many intrinsic and extrinsic factors farmed fish qualitative attributes can be subject to changes. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of boiling on physical parameters and nutritional profile of fillets from two farmed species [meagre (Argyrosomus regius) and rainbow trout (Onchorynchus mykiss)]. Specie-specific differences in physico-chemical traits influenced raw flesh quality and the response to cooking. In meagre, sampling times differences in macronutrients were nullified by cooking. In rainbow trout, boiling modified physico-chemical profile depending on the strain while farming conditions affected cooked fillet quality in a different extent according to the strain.

Abstract

Nowadays, the technological advances allow developing many applications in different fields. In the book Colorimetry and Image Processing, two important fields are presented: colorimetry and image processing. Colorimetry is observed by a visual interactive programming learning system, an approach based on color analysis of Habanero chili pepper, an approach based on scene image segmentation centered on mathematical morphology, other systems based on the simulations of the dichromatic color appearance, and, finally, an approach based on the color reconstruction in order to enhancement its using super-resolution methods. On the other hand, image processing is shown by pansharpening algorithms for hyperspectral images, an approach based on the analysis of the low-resolution satellite images and ground-based sky camera for estimating the cloud motion, a hybrid super-resolution framework that combines desirable features of TV and PM models, a study of the real-time video analysis used for anthropometric measurements on agricultural tools and machines, and finally, an approach based on the threshold optimization iterative algorithm using the ground truth data and assessing the accuracy of a range of threshold values through the corresponding Kappa coefficient of concordance.

Abstract

This book sets itself specific objective: namely, the consideration of the design of the river landscape as a cultural and social investment. The aim is at "control" of a landscape which is transformed while preserving harmonious forms and structures that are sustainable from an ecological and environmental aspect, and is continually redesigned on the basis of human requirements, without overwhelming nature. The need for hydraulic defence of the rivers thus becomes an opportunity for a "third landscape" project, a chance to transform "non-places" into "places".

Abstract

This book comprises the proceedings for the International Conference for Effective and Sustainable Hydraulic Fracturing (HF2013) which was held 20-22 May 2013 in Brisbane, Australia. The conference goal was to advance hydraulic fracturing technology that is effective in its purpose and sustainable in its impacts on communities and environments by bringing together hydraulic fracturing experts not only from the petroleum industry, but also from other application areas of hydraulic fracturing such as mining and geothermal energy production. Topics include hydraulic fracturing of naturally fractured formations, well completions and fracture initiation, induced seismicity, experimental investigations, and coupled modelling. Beyond this mix of traditional hydraulic fracturing research topics, this book includes papers on applications in mining and also on regulations, risk, and communities.

Abstract

An essential introduction to, and overview of, the International Joint Commission and Canada-U.S. water relationships. The International Joint Commission oversees and protects the shared waters of Canada and the United States. Created by the Boundary Waters Treaty of 1909, it is one of the world’s oldest international environmental bodies. A pioneering piece of transborder water governance, the IJC has been integral to the modern Canada-United States relationship. This is the definitive history of the International Joint Commission. Separating myth from reality and uncovering the historical evolution of the IJC from its inception to its present, this collection features an impressive interdisciplinary group of scholars and practitioners. Examining the many aspects of border waters from east to west The First Century of the International Joint Commission traces the three major periods of the IJC, detailing its early focus on water flow, its middle period of growth and increasing politicization, and its modern emphasis on ecosystems. Informative, detailed, and fascinating, The First Century of the International Joint Commission is essential reading for academics, contemporary policy makers, governments, and all those interested in sustainability, climate change, pollution, and resiliency along the Canada-US Border.

Abstract

Giulio G. Rizzo, dott.
