Abstract

Abstract

Roberto Kozulj proposes a bold and vital idea in a global context marked by economic and political crises: how to achieve the welfare state in the 21st century. If new ideas and approaches do not emerge, the most likely is that there will be a proliferation of analyzes, opinions and controversies that, in general, repeat old recipes. In this work the author proposes that if the activities linked to urban development are reoriented towards the construction and reconstruction of sustainable cities, it would tend to solve a large part of the problem of structural unemployment. Urban maintenance and the transformation of cities, which require low-skilled labor, would allow sustainability to deploy the set of dimensions that it entails. These range from the right of future generations to have natural resources and a non-degraded environment, to their opportunity to be inserted into the labor market.

Abstract

How does the current labour market training system function and whose interests does it serve? In this introductory textbook, Bob Barnetson wades into the debate between workers and employers, and governments and economists to investigate the ways in which labour power is produced and reproduced in Canadian society. After sifting through the facts and interpretations of social scientists and government policymakers, Barnetson interrogates the training system through analysis of the political and economic forces that constitute modern Canada. This book not only provides students of Canada’s division of labour with a general introduction to the main facets of labour-market training—including skills development, post-secondary and community education, and workplace training—but also encourages students to think critically about the relationship between training systems and the ideologies that support them.

Abstract

The book illustrates the results of research that emerged within the context of a specific European Union programme. The analysis was carried out by Italian, French and Spanish academics co-ordinated by the Inter-University Centre of Political Sociology of the University of Florence. It aims to reconstruct the educational careers of the new generations within the social and economic context of Southern Europe, paying particular attention to the conditions of university students and to youth unemployment. The issue is examined and discussed also in relation to a broader sociological meditation on the values shaping the future of the political culture in contemporary Europe.

Abstract

"Towards New Beginnings: Journalists’ Descriptions about Ruptures in Media Work This volume reveals a previously untold view on changes in media work in Finland. Finnish journalists relate their experiences of being made redundant or deciding to resign, and their views on their profession in a time of flux. The data are based on telephone surveys, in-depth interviews and journalists’ written accounts. Journalists are riddled with insecurity about their future. They feel they have borne the brunt of misplaced investments and the economic conjuncture, and their work motivation and creativity have suffered due to recurring layoffs in newsrooms. Support from employment authorities for finding a new job has also been practically non-existent, and coping with a career change has generated further stress and insecurity. However, journalists who have found new employment typically feel more comfortable in these jobs than in their former work. Career shifters have also been able to make use of their journalistic skills in their new jobs and identify themselves as journalists. The authors are from the Research Centre for Journalism, Media and Communication (COMET) at the University of Tampere, Finland. The study was funded by the Finnish Work Environment Fund and the Foundation for Promoting Journalistic Culture (JOKES). "

Abstract

In the European Union, unemployment rates differ markedly across regions, both within and across nations. This study presents a coherent theoretical approach to explain the emergence and persistence of such regional unemployment disparities. The analysis builds on the wage curve literature, and on regional agglomeration theories like the new economic geography. These theoretical strings are combined and extended, in order to provide a unified framework.
