Abstract

Le terrain ethnographique plonge le chercheur dans un espace d’altérité et d’engagement qui le confronte inévitablement à des questionnements (et à des doutes) sur sa posture, ses choix méthodologiques, ses dilemmes éthiques. L’art de l’ethnographie tient dans la capacité du chercheur à s’adapter en permanence à l’imprévisibilité de son terrain grâce à l’exercice de la réflexivité (retour sur soi et sur son terrain). Cette confrontation au monde de l’autre et ces allers retours perpétuels entre le terrain et la réflexion, interpellent des expériences à la fois émotionnelles, physiques et intellectuelles qui ne peuvent se transmettre sous forme de règles ou de recettes toutes faites mais livrent une myriade de pratiques méthodologiques. La richesse de ce livre réside également dans la diversité des terrains du Maroc contemporain : du Haut-Atlas au grand Casablanca, d’El Hajeb à Tanger, de Nador à Meknès, en passant par le Rif central et par l’intimité du foyer des couples mixtes installés au Maroc. C’est autant le monde des ouvrières, des adeptes du soufisme, des résidents d’un quartier d’habitations informelles, d’une communauté berbère vivant au sein d’une montagne, de la copropriété, des phénomènes participatifs, de la gestion du patrimoine, de la mixité conjugale, de la drogue et de la précarité sociale que ce livre nous fait découvrir. Ces histoires rendues vivantes à travers les récits passionnants des auteurs nous apparaissent comme un excellent outil pédagogique permettant aux étudiants d’acquérir les « ficelles du métier », aux chercheurs de poursuivre leurs réflexions sur les questions méthodologiques inévitablement renouvelées lors de chaque terrain ; enfin, au grand public d’approcher la grande diversité sociale du Maroc d’aujourd’hui au-delà des représentations toutes faites.

1974 : le minimex… 1976 : l'aide sociale… 1993 : le programme d'urgence pour une société plus solidaire… 1995 : le rapport général sur la pauvreté… Il a semblé nécessaire de faire le point de l'évolution légale, réglementaire et jurisprudentielle quant aux missions des CPAS, au début d'une nouvelle législature tant pour les conseils de l'aide sociale que pour les Parlements et Gouvernements. Une place privilégiée a en outre été réservée au débat entre les praticiens du droit et les praticiens du “terrain”, pour confronter les règles et principes juridiques à la réalité quotidienne. Chaque thème a dès lors été abordé soit par deux orateurs provenant de milieux professionnels différents, soit par un exposé juridique suivi d'une intervention privilégiée faite par un travailleur social.

Abstract

Finding Room in Beirut: Places of the Everyday demonstrates why it is worth our while to explore the value and contemporary meaning of urban areas about to undergo complete renewal. Branching off from discourses surrounding the terrain vague, the book argues that large populated urban areas meet the criteria of the vague and constitute a particular perspective from which to build a critical stance in regards to the contemporary city. But unlike a terrain vague, a vague urbain — inhabited areas where property ownership is usually obscure and informal behaviours a daily affair — possesses real communities and offers an alternative understanding on how a city can be practiced and how lessons should be learned before its complete transformation. Stemming from a photographic and architectural documentation of Bachoura, a central area of Beirut, Lebanon, the book shows how the vague urbain allows for different ways of inhabiting, ways that are as — or perhaps even more — real and anchored in the imagination of the city as those proposed by standardising developments. Building on the intricacies of found situations, improvised uses and local narratives, it is an exploration as to how the meeting of a marvellous realism with l’intrigue, the vague urbain, and temporary architecture can provide opportunities for the emergence of hidden narratives.

Abstract

Geomorphometry is the science of quantitative terrain characterization and analysis, and has traditionally focused on the investigation of terrestrial and planetary landscapes. However, applications of marine geomorphometry have now moved beyond the simple adoption of techniques developed for terrestrial studies, driven by the rise in the acquisition of high-resolution seafloor data and by the availability of user-friendly spatial analytical tools. Considering that the seafloor represents 71% of the surface of our planet, this is an important step towards understanding the Earth in its entirety.This volume is the first one dedicated to marine applications of geomorphometry. It showcases studies addressing the five steps of geomorphometry: sampling a surface (e.g., the seafloor), generating a Digital Terrain Model (DTM) from samples, preprocessing the DTM for subsequent analyses (e.g., correcting for errors and artifacts), deriving terrain attributes and/or extracting terrain features from the DTM, and using and explaining those terrain attributes and features in a given context. Throughout these studies, authors address a range of challenges and issues associated with applying geomorphometric techniques to the complex marine environment, including issues related to spatial scale, data quality, and linking seafloor topography with physical, geological, biological, and ecological processes. As marine geomorphometry becomes increasingly recognized as a sub-discipline of geomorphometry, this volume brings together a collection of research articles that reflect the types of studies that are helping to chart the course for the future of marine geomorphometry.

Abstract

This Special Issue “Atmospheric Conditions for Wind Energy Applications” hosts papers on aspects of remote sensing for atmospheric conditions for wind energy applications. Wind lidar technology is presented from a theoretical view on the coherent focused Doppler lidar principles. Furthermore, wind lidar for applied use for wind turbine control, wind farm wake, and gust characterizations is presented, as well as methods to reduce uncertainty when using lidar in complex terrain. Wind lidar observations are used to validate numerical model results. Wind Doppler lidar mounted on aircraft used for observing winds in hurricane conditions and Doppler radar on the ground used for very short-term wind forecasting are presented. For the offshore environment, floating lidar data processing is presented as well as an experiment with wind-profiling lidar on a ferry for model validation. Assessments of wind resources in the coastal zone using wind-profiling lidar and global wind maps using satellite data are presented..

Abstract

Wind turbine aerodynamics is one of the central subjects of wind turbine technology. To reduce the levelized cost of energy (LCOE), the size of a single wind turbine has been increased to 12 MW at present, with further increases expected in the near future. Big wind turbines and their associated wind farms have many advantages but also challenges. The typical effects are mainly related to the increase in Reynolds number and blade flexibility. This Special Issue is a collection of 21 important research works addressing the aerodynamic challenges appearing in such developments. The 21 research papers cover a wide range of problems related to wind turbine aerodynamics, which includes atmospheric turbulent flow modeling, wind turbine flow modeling, wind turbine design, wind turbine control, wind farm flow modeling in complex terrain, wind turbine noise modeling, vertical axis wind turbine, and offshore wind energy. Readers from all over the globe are expected to greatly benefit from this Special Issue collection regarding their own work and the goal of enabling the technological development of new environmentally friendly and cost-effective wind energy systems in order to reach the target of 100% energy use from renewable sources, worldwide, by 2050

Abstract

Quantitative land remote sensing has recently advanced dramatically, particularly in China. It has been largely driven by vast governmental investment, the availability of a huge amount of Chinese satellite data, geospatial information requirements for addressing pressing environmental issues and other societal benefits. Many individuals have also fostered and made great contributions to its development, and Prof. Xiaowen Li was one of these leading figures. This book is published in memory of Prof. Li. The papers collected in this book cover topics from surface reflectance simulation, inversion algorithm and estimation of variables, to applications in optical, thermal, Lidar and microwave remote sensing. The wide range of variables include directional reflectance, chlorophyll fluorescence, aerosol optical depth, incident solar radiation, albedo, surface temperature, upward longwave radiation, leaf area index, fractional vegetation cover, forest biomass, precipitation, evapotranspiration, freeze/thaw snow cover, vegetation productivity, phenology and biodiversity indicators. They clearly reflect the current level of research in this area. This book constitutes an excellent reference suitable for upper-level undergraduate students, graduate students and professionals in remote sensing.
