Abstract

This book contains experiences and results of computer simulations in the field of research on glued laminated timber. Literature and references to the corresponding methodical approach are given to facilitate the access to the elementary basics. It also contains constructive explanations and critical annotations on modelling glued laminated timber for bending, tension and compression tests. Finally, the relevance of the simulation results for practical issues is discussed.

Abstract

Experiments to characterize the effects of moisture content and temperature on the mechanical properties of concrete were conducted. Based on these experiments, a new overall material model capable of predicting the mechanical behaviour of concrete subject to elevated temperatures up to 100 °C was developed. The material model estimates the time, temperature and moisture dependency of the compressive and tensile strength, creep and shrinkage of concrete.

Abstract

High-strength low-alloy steels are designed to provide specific desirable combinations of properties, such as strength, toughness, formability, weldability, and corrosion resistance. These features make them ideal for critical applications under severe service conditions and in aggressive environments, namely rail and road vehicles, passenger car components, construction machinery, industrial equipment, offshore structures, gas pipelines, and bridges, among others. This Special Issue aims to address the mechanical behavior of high-strength low-alloy steels from different perspectives, namely in terms of mechanical deformation, damage, and failure. It gathers scientific contributions from authors working in various fields, for instance processing techniques, the modeling of the mechanical behavior, the characterization of material microstructure, the influence of environmental parameters, temperature dependence, as well as advanced applications.

Abstract

Aluminium is the world’s most abundant metal and is the third most common element, comprising 8% of the Earth’s crust. The versatility of aluminium makes it the most widely used metal after steel. By utilising various combinations of their advantageous properties such as strength, lightness, corrosion resistance, recyclability, and formability, aluminium alloys are being employed in an ever-increasing number of applications. In the recent decade, a rapid new development has been made in production of aluminium alloys, and new techniques of casting, forming, welding, and surface modification, have been evolved to improve the structural integrity of aluminium alloys. This Special Issue covers wide scope of recent progress and new developments regarding all aspects of aluminium alloys, including processing, forming, welding, microstructure and mechanical property, creep, fatigue, corrosion and surface behavior, thermodynamics, modeling, and application of different aluminum alloys.

Abstract

"Since 2012, the subsequent reinforcement of reinforced concrete components with bonded reinforcement has been regulated in a separate guideline. This includes the dimensioning of the adhesively bonded strips made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP), which, in addition to the complex iterative bending design, have a very complex bonding behavior. For this purpose, the German Committee for Structural Concrete developed a model for the verification based on experimental evaluations, in which the occurring tensile forces are partly transferred into the component via intermediate elements (partial distances between flexural cracks). Simultaneously, simplified but more inaccurate verification formats were made available to reduce the complexity of the verification. For an early assessment of the use of bonded CFRP strips, different tools have been developed in this paper for reinforced concrete components with a rectangular cross-section depending on the different verification formats. For this purpose, the design parameters were&#xD;considered separately for pure bending strength and bonding behavior. For a simple calculation, tables for the design with dimensionless coefficients were obtained by analogy with the reinforced concrete construction, with which the required cross-section area for the CFRP strips can be determined by means of a limited stretching from the simplified verification of the flexural load bearing capacity. For a more economical solution, the more precise verification of the force transmission on the intermediate elements was configured in an Excel workbook, because this results in an extraordinary iterative calculation effort."&#xD;

Abstract

This book was proposed and organized as a means to present recent developments in the field of nondestructive testing of materials in civil engineering. For this reason, the articles highlighted in this editorial relate to different aspects of nondestructive testing of different materials in civil engineering—from building materials to building structures. The current trend in the development of nondestructive testing of materials in civil engineering is mainly concerned with the detection of flaws and defects in concrete elements and structures, and acoustic methods predominate in this field. As in medicine, the trend is towards designing test equipment that allows one to obtain a picture of the inside of the tested element and materials. Abstract

Advanced Glasses, Composites and Ceramics for High-Growth Industries (CoACH) was a European Training Network (ETN) project (http://www.coach-etn.eu/) funded by the Horizon 2020 program. CoACH involved multiple actors in the innovation ecosystem for advanced materials, composed of five universities and ten enterprises in seven different European countries. The project studied the next generation of materials that could bring innovation in the healthcare, construction, and energy sectors, among others, from new bioactive glasses for bone implants to eco-friendly cements and new environmentally friendly thermoelectrics for energy conversion. The novel materials developed in the CoACH project pave the way for innovative products, improved cost competitiveness, and positive environmental impact. The present Special Issue contains 14 papers resulting from the CoACH project, showcasing the breadth of materials and processes developed during the project.

Abstract

The use of lightweight structures across several industries has become inevitable in today’s world given the ever-rising demand for improved fuel economy and resource efficiency. In the automotive industry, composites, reinforced plastics, and lightweight materials, such as aluminum and magnesium are being adopted by many OEMs at increasing rates to reduce vehicle mass and develop efficient new lightweight designs. Automotive weight reduction with high-strength steel is also witnessing major ongoing efforts to design novel damage-controlled forming processes for a new generation of efficient, lightweight steel components. Although great progress has been made over the past decades in understanding the thermomechanical behavior of these materials, their extensive use as lightweight solutions is still limited due to numerous challenges that play a key role in cost competitiveness. Hence, significant research efforts are still required to fully understand the anisotropic material behavior, failure mechanisms, and, most importantly, the interplay between industrial processing, microstructure development, and the resulting properties. This Special Issue reprint book features concise reports on the current status in the field. The topics discussed herein include areas of manufacturing and processing technologies of materials for lightweight applications, innovative microstructure and process design concepts, and advanced characterization techniques combined with modeling of material’s behavior.
