Abstract

In May 1924, the Soncino Society of the Friends of the Jewish Book was founded in Berlin. Named after the Soncinos, a 15th to 16th century Jewish-Italian family of printers, it was the first society of Jewish bibliophiles, and set the goal of publishing rare Jewish books and Hebrew printings. The eight essays in this volume explore the history of the Society and its commitment to Hebrew book culture.

Abstract

1983 was one of the tensest years of the Cold War. This volume publishes 389 documents for the first time that reveal West Germany`s efforts to maintain East-West dialogue in the face of intensified confrontation between the two blocs and to prevent collapse of the process of European unification. Among the successes were the decision for a follow-up CSCE conference in Madrid and the continuation of the special relationship with the East Germany.

Abstract

1984 marked a low point in East-West relations. NATO`s deployment of medium-range nuclear missiles in Western Europe as well as the announcement of the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) led to a ratcheting up of tensions. The CDE, a conference that sought to build confidence and promote disarmament, first convened in Stockholm in 1984, yet it was not possible to break the deadlock in negotiations over nuclear weapons until after the death of Andropov and Reagan`s election victory. West Germany and France expanded their cooperation during this period as they sought greater European integration as well as the strengthening of the Western European Union (WEU). The West German government in Bonn came under pressure following reports that German firms had assisted Iraq with chemical weapons production. It was also criticized for considering the delivery of tanks to Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, a growing number of East Germans were taking refuge in Western embassies, seeking to escape the Eastern bloc. This fanned tensions between East and West bowing to Soviet pressure, the East German head of state, Erich Honecker, cancelled a trip to West Germany. The difficult historical burden borne by West Germany was evident during the D-Day memorial ceremony in Normandy as well as during the memorial service attended by Helmut Kohl and François Mitterrand in Verdun. West Germany was exhorted by many nations to shun revanchism and Pangermanism. The 357 documents made available for the first time in this collection address a range of other topics, including the assassination of Indira Gandhi, the wars in Lebanon and the Pesian Gulf, the conflicts in Central America, and the Polish Crisis.

Abstract

Abstract

In republican times, one of Rome's deadliest enemies was King Mithridates of Pontus. In 66 BCE, after decades of inconclusive struggle, the tribune Manilius proposed a bill that would give supreme command in the war against Mithridates to Pompey the Great, who had just swept the Mediterranean clean of another menace: the pirates. While powerful aristocrats objected to the proposal, which would endow Pompey with unprecedented powers, the bill proved hugely popular among the people, and one of the praetors, Marcus Tullius Cicero, also hastened to lend it his support. In his first ever political speech, variously entitled pro lege Manilia or de imperio Gnaei Pompei, Cicero argues that the war against Mithridates requires the appointment of a perfect general and that the only man to live up to such lofty standards is Pompey. In the section under consideration here, Cicero defines the most important hallmarks of the ideal military commander and tries to demonstrate that Pompey is his living embodiment. This course book offers a portion of the original Latin text, study aids with vocabulary, and a commentary. Designed to stretch and stimulate readers, the incisive commentary will be of particular interest to students of Latin at both AS and undergraduate level. It extends beyond detailed linguistic analysis and historical background to encourage critical engagement with Cicero's prose and discussion of the most recent scholarly thought.

Abstract

From the beginning it was a key priority of the first president of the Federal Republic of Germany to reply personally to many of the hundreds of letters he received every day from individual citizens. In Heuss' correspondence with them, important themes of postwar society in the context of collapse and reconstruction, restoration and new beginning are evident. Heuss' letters were friendly in tone and written specifically to each individual. Often quite humorous, they sometimes tended to be lecturesome and contentious. The letters provide insight into how Heuss perceived his office, and his stance set an example for his successors. Contains letters from citizens and Heuss' replies As political dialogue between individual citizens and the first president of the Federal Republic of Germany , the correspondence provides insight into German postwar society.

Abstract

Already in his first term of office Theodor Heuss laid the foundation for a new tradition in German history. In his person, a positive attitude towards democracy was uniquely united with extensive historical experience and a strong political will to shape the young state. Through his educated but at the same time folksy demeanor, he integrated the different groups of the population and sharpened the democratic consciousness of the citizens of this still-fragile democracy.

Abstract

Theodor Heuss assumed his second term of office as President of Germany in September 1954 under propitious circumstances: He was re-elected by an overwhelming majority in the Federal Assembly, and enjoyed surprisingly broad public approval. His non-partisan style of leadership allowed him to win the support of Germany`s citizenry for key political decisions. As a representative abroad he presented Germany in a new light, showcasing it as a decidedly democratic, peaceful, and civil society.

Abstract

After his time in office as Federal President came to an end, one would hardly describe Theodor Heuss as living a life of retirement. He traveled, wrote books and articles, voiced his opinions on political and social issues in lectures, and not least, was an indefatigable correspondent. During the last four years of his life, Heuss remained a sought&#8211after figure in public life whose opinions drew wide attention in Germany and abroad.

Abstract

West Germany`s policy toward the CSCE following the Helsinki conference was shaped by the subsequent meetings in Belgrade (1977&#82111978) and Madrid (1980&#82111983) as well as further Expert Meetings. The study shows how important the CSCE process was for Bonn as an instrument for crisis management against the backdrop of deteriorating international relations, to preserve East-West dètente, and to make the Iron Curtain more permeable.
