Abstract

L'ouvrage étudie les rapports entre une grande agglomération urbaine et son environnement rural. Le Lyonnais, le Beaujolais, la Dombes et le Bas-Dauphiné constituent les principales composantes d'un ensemble spatial d'une singulière diversité. Dans quelle mesure la présence de Lyon a-t-elle pesé sur les destinées des campagnes qui l'entourent et contribué à l'affirmation de personnalités aussi contrastées ? Répondre à cette question suppose de remonter le cours du temps et de questionner longuement le passé, mais aussi de s'interroger sur la nature et le sens des mutations de l'époque contemporaine. Le cas de la cité rhodanienne est sans doute unique en France, ou du moins sans équivalent parmi les autres grandes villes, en raison de l'originalité des relations qu'elle a tissées au cours des siècles passés avec les campagnes périphériques. Si les héritages historiques impriment encore des marques vigoureuses sur les paysages et les activités des hommes, de profonds changements se produisent sous nos yeux annonçant une ère nouvelle dans les rapports entre Lyon et son environnement rural. À partir de l'exemple lyonnais, c'est une réflexion générale sur l'évolution des rapports ville-campagne que mène l'auteur.

Abstract

Poverty and beggars have always been a part of the city of Vienna. Between 1443 and 1693 only beggars with beggars’ badges („Stadtzeichen“) were authorised to beg. The contextualisation, edition and analysis of a beggars’ directory (“Stadtzeichnerbuch”) dating from the seventeenth century (1678–1685) reveals the living circumstances of more than 900 poor people which can hardly be found in other sources.

Abstract

Economic losses from disasters are now reaching an average of US$250–$300 billion a year. In the last 20 years, more than 530,000 people died as a direct result of extreme weather events; millions more were seriously injured. Most of the deaths and serious injuries were in developing countries. Meanwhile, highly infectious diseases will continue to emerge or re-emerge, and natural hazards will not disappear. But these extreme events do not need to turn into large-scale disasters. Better and faster responses are possible. The authors contend that even though there is much generosity in the world to support the responses to and recovery from natural disasters, the current funding model, based on mobilizing financial resources after disasters take place, is flawed and makes responses late, fragmented, unreliable, and poorly targeted, while providing poor incentives for preparedness or risk reduction. The way forward centres around reforming the funding model for disasters, moving towards plans with simple rules for early action and that are locked in before disasters through credible funding strategies—all while resisting the allure of post-disaster discretionary funding and the threat it poses for those seeking to ensure that disasters have a less severe impact.

Abstract

Historically, for sustaining and reproducing their economic lives, people have obtained goods and services through various ways. How did people tackle issues that the market did not handle well? This volume compares early modern efforts to provide “public goods”—defined in contraposition to market-mediated goods and goods provided through personal relations, such as kinship ties. We examine poverty and famine relief, infrastructure building, and forestry management in East Asia and Europe, using Japan’s Tokugawa era (1603–1868) as a benchmark from which consider the cases in Prussia, China, and England. Taking advantage of rich scholarship on the role of autonomous village and regional society in Japan’s early modern history, the volume highlights the diverse approaches to providing public goods across societies, relativizing the discussion on the formation of fiscal state drawn from the experience in “advanced” Western Europe, and it constructs the beginnings of an early modern basis for forecasting the diversity in public-goods provision future into the modern and contemporary periods.

Abstract

The fluid flow in fracture porous media plays a significant role in the assessment of deep underground reservoirs, such as through CO2 sequestration, enhanced oil recovery, and geothermal energy development. Many methods have been employed—from laboratory experimentation to theoretical analysis and numerical simulations—and allowed for many useful conclusions. This Special Issue aims to report on the current advances related to this topic. This collection of 58 papers represents a wide variety of topics, including on granite permeability investigation, grouting, coal mining, roadway, and concrete, to name but a few. We sincerely hope that the papers published in this Special Issue will be an invaluable resource for our readers.
