Abstract

Engineering sciences in Germany remain a male domain, although for years, efforts have been made to balance gender relations in these areas. The author examines the question of whether and to what extent the asymmetrical gender relationship is rooted in the contents and cultures of engineering sciences themselves. Interviews with engineers are used to identify various key concepts that contribute to the maintenance of binary, heteronormative gender relations in this field.; Die Ingenieurwissenschaften in Deutschland halten sich als Männerdomäne, obwohl es seit Jahren Bemühungen gibt, das Geschlechterverhältnis in diesen Bereichen auszugleichen.

Abstract

This study focuses on Holy Scriptures as material objects. What are the contexts for the appearances and the usages of these objects? Is there a difference between Holy Scriptures and other objects, and is it inevitably their sacred content that renders them holy? Interdisciplinary perspectives offer new incentives for understanding the material phenomenon of the ‘Holy Scriptures’.

Abstract

Alena Ledeneva invites you on a voyage of discovery to explore society’s open secrets, unwritten rules and know-how practices. Broadly defined as ‘ways of getting things done’, these invisible yet powerful informal practices tend to escape articulation in official discourse. They include emotion-driven exchanges of gifts or favours and tributes for services, interest-driven know-how (from informal welfare to informal employment and entrepreneurship), identity-driven practices of solidarity, and power-driven forms of co-optation and control. The paradox, or not, of the invisibility of these informal practices is their ubiquity. Expertly practised by insiders but often hidden from outsiders, informal practices are, as this book shows, deeply rooted all over the world, yet underestimated in policy. Entries from the five continents presented in this volume are samples of the truly global and ever-growing collection, made possible by a remarkable collaboration of over 200 scholars across disciplines and area studies. By mapping the grey zones, blurred boundaries, types of ambivalence and contexts of complexity, this book creates the first Global Map of Informality. The accompanying database (www.in-formality.com) is searchable by region, keyword or type of practice, so do explore what works, how, where and why!

Abstract

How does a cultural landscape come into being? And how is this process connected to the valorization of objects, sites and spaces as cultural heritage? Based on the example of the Czech-German Ore Mountains the ethnographic study investigates the relationship between practices of inheriting culture and the producton of space. With reference to anthropological heritage and policy studies, the research focuses on national and international heritage governances, particularly those of the UNESCO world heritage prorgram. How are they related to local memory discourses and practices? How do they assist in the promotion of regional tourism and other economic endeavors? What role do EU-policies on European integration play? The Czech-German Ore Mountains region is marked by post-war forced migration and resettlement. Against the background of this complex history, the study shows how collective claims on cultural property are formulated and how a shared, transboundary heritage is negotiated.

Abstract

After a review of the rival approaches that are used to evaluate public sectorperformance in general, five dimensions of EMB performance are set out whichare argued to be crucial for achieving democratic ideals in an electoral democracy. The aim is to set out these dimensions, and the sources of data that can beused by researchers to assess whether they are achieved. The UK and Canadaare then assessed against the framework so that the utility of the model becomesclear. The concepts and framework also act as founding principles for the remainderof the book.

Abstract

In the immediate aftermath of the 2007 Kenyan Presidential election, the countryentered into a political, economic and humanitarian crisis. Post-election violenceerupted leading to estimates of over 1,000 people being killed by police, criminalgangs and militia groups, and 660,000 displacements, as opponents of President MwaiKibaki alleged electoral manipulation (CBS News 2008; Kenny 2019). Tensionswere deeply rooted in Kenya’s political history.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

How religious practices are reproduced has become a major theoretical issue. This work examines data on Nuaulu ritual performances collected over a 30 year period, comparing different categories of event in terms of frequency and periodicity. It seeks to identify the influencing factors and the consequences for continuity. Such an approach enables a focus on related issues: variation in performance, how rituals change in relation to material and social conditions, the connections between different ritual types, the way these interact as cycles, and the extent to which fidelity of transmission is underpinned by a common model or repertoire of elements. This monograph brings to completion a long-term study of the religious behaviour of the Nuaulu, a people of the island of Seram in the Indonesian province of Maluku. Ethnographically, it is important for several reasons: the Nuaulu are one of the few animist societies remaining on Seram; the data emphasize patterns of practices in a part of Indonesia where studies have hitherto been more concerned with meaning and symbolic classification; and because Nuaulu live in an area where recent political tension has been between Christians and Muslims. Nuaulu are, paradoxically, both caught between these two groups, and apart from them.Roy Ellen is Professor of Anthropology and Human Ecology at the University of Kent, a Fellow of The British Academy, and was president of the Royal Anthropological Institute between 2007 and 2011. He was trained at the London School of Economics and at the University of Leiden. Among his other books are The cultural relations of classification (on Nuaulu animal categories) and On the edge of the Banda zone (on trade in east Seram).
