Abstract

Les documents manuscrits de la famille des Jussieu, professeurs de botanique au Jardin du Roy puis au Muséum d’histoire naturelle (1710-1853) ont été acquis en 1858 par le Muséum après la mort d’Adrien de Jussieu. Conservés à la Bibliothèque centrale du Muséum ils forment un fonds riche d’informations pour l’histoire des sciences, particulièrement celle du Jardin et celle de la Botanique. Parmi les plus anciens, se trouve un portefeuille contenant 98 dessins de champignons (en couleur), réalisés vers 1730, par Claude Aubriet (c. 1665-1742) sous la direction d’Antoine de Jussieu (1686- 1758). Claude Aubriet. peintre miniaturiste au Jardin du Roy. est connu pour la réalisation des illustrations des Elémens de botanique que publie Joseph Pitton de Tournefort (1656-1708) en 1694. Ces dessins sont loués pour leur précision par Carl von Linné lui-même. Les dessins de champignons par Aubriet furent exécutés à une période « clé » dans l’histoire de la mycologie, puisqu’en 1729. Pier Antonio Micheli publie dans son ouvrage fondamental (Novo plantarum généra) une étude précise des champignons, accompagnée d’excellentes gravures en noir et blanc. Les réalisations d’Aubriel souvent soignées et fidèles aux modèles, sont précieuses car les représentations en couleurs de champignons sont rarissimes avant la fin du xviiie siècle. Elles témoignent en outre du regard que l’on portait alors sur ces cryptogames, qui apparaissaient bien mystérieux du point de vue de leur organisation, de leur reproduction et. pour tout dire, de leur « existence » même. Cette publication intéressera vivement les mycologues et contribuera a faire connaître Claude Aubriet. En outre, elle souligne le rôle décisif que les illustrateurs scientifiques ont toujours joué au cours de l’histoire.

Abstract

During the past few decades, plasma science has witnessed a great growth in laboratory studies, in simulations, and in space. Plasma is the most common phase of ordinary matter in the universe. It is a state in which ionized matter (even as low as 1%) becomes highly electrically conductive. As such, long-range electric and magnetic fields dominate its behavior. Cosmic plasmas are mostly associated with stars, supernovae, pulsars and neutron stars, quasars and active galaxies at the vicinities of black holes (i.e., their jets and accretion disks). Cosmic plasma phenomena can be studied with different methods, such as laboratory experiments, astrophysical observations, and theoretical/computational approaches (i.e., MHD, particle-in-cell simulations, etc.). They exhibit a multitude of complex magnetohydrodynamic behaviors, acceleration, radiation, turbulence, and various instability phenomena. This Special Issue addresses the growing need of the plasma science principles in astrophysics and presents our current understanding of the physics of astrophysical plasmas, their electromagnetic behaviors and properties (e.g., shocks, waves, turbulence, instabilities, collimation, acceleration and radiation), both microscopically and macroscopically. This Special Issue provides a series of state-of-the-art reviews from international experts in the field of cosmic plasmas and electromagnetic phenomena using theoretical approaches, astrophysical observations, laboratory experiments, and state-of-the-art simulation studies.

Abstract

This book contains selected contributions on surface modification to improve the properties of solid materials. The surface properties are tailored either by functionalization, etching, or deposition of a thin coating. Functionalization is achieved by a brief treatment with non-equilibrium gaseous plasma containing suitable radicals that interact chemically with the material surface and thus enable the formation of rather stable functional groups. Etching is performed in order to modify the surface morphology. The etching parameters are selected in such a way that a rich morphology of the surfaces is achieved spontaneously on the sub-micrometer scale, without using masks. The combination of adequate surface morphology and functionalization of materials leads to superior surface properties which are particularly beneficial for the desired response upon incubation with biological matter. Alternatively, the materials are coated with a suitable thin film that is useful in various applications from food to aerospace industries.

Abstract

The prevalence of diabetes is on the increase in the UK and worldwide, partly due to changes in lifestyle which predispose individuals to overweight and obesity. It is estimated that about 90% of the currently diagnosed adults have type 2 diabetes, and based on the World Health Organisation (WHO) report, about 422 million adults were living with diabetes in 2014 compared with 108 million in 1980; this condition caused about 1.5 million deaths in 2012. In the United States of America, it is estimated that about 30.3 million adults are living with diabetes, with a further 1.5 million new diabetes cases diagnosed every year, representing an increasing prevalence of this condition. Diabetes represents a major public health challenge, despite advances in technology and the pharmaceutical industry. These problems may be in the form of acute or long-term complications. Therefore, in order to attenuate the problems of diabetes, management strategies usually include lifestyle changes such as increased physical activity and dietary interventions. Studies which evaluate the role of nutrition in the management of type 2 diabetes often involve human and animal models as these approaches enable us to have a broader and more in-depth understanding of the condition. In some cases, diabetes may co-exist with other conditions, such as stroke, and these may present unique challenges with regard to nutritional interventions. This Special Issue aims to evaluate the risk factors associated with type 2 diabetes and the role of the diet in the management of people with this condition. This evidence is drawn from both human and animal studies.
