Abstract

How is family life structured and lived beyond current family models? In the articles on family forms with multiple parenthood, the authors describe the connections and quantitative distribution of adoptive, foster, step and rainbow families as well as families after gamet donation and discuss their challenges and potentials. Subsequently, the current legal framework of these family forms are presented and the need for reform is pointed out. A further contribution deals with the representation of families in television series. Finally, important ethical questions in the context of multiple parenthood are discussed. The book is aimed at specialists in family, child and youth welfare, family sociologists and social scientists from other disciplines. The book is intended to enable them to broaden their view of the family by highlighting important topics that are important in family life with multiple parenthood.

Abstract

Plants have been exposed to multiple environmental stressors on long-term (seasonal) and short-term (daily) basis since their appearance on land. However, the frequency and the intensity of stress events have increased much during the last three decades because of climate change. Plants have developed, however, a multiplicity of modular and highly integrated strategies to cope with challenges imposed by novel, usually harsher environments. These strategies include migration, acclimation and adaptation. Twelve articles in this research topic exactly focus on the relative significance of these response mechanisms for the successful acclimation of plants to a wide range of novel environmental pressures. Four articles , additionally, explore how plants respond to severe stress conditions resulting from the concurrent action of multiple stressors. Ten articles mostly examine how morpho-anatomical, physiological and biochemical-related traits integrate when plants suffer from ‘novel’ threats, such as solid, gaseous, and electromagnetic pollutants. Suitable physiological indicators for developing conservation strategies are described in the last two works. This research topic highlights that bottom-up, as well as, top-down approaches will be necessary to develop in near future in the study of plants´ responses to environmental pressures.

Abstract

This work focuses on the analysis and design of multiple element antennas (MEA) and their interaction with the propagation channel. In particular, attention is given to urban channels and how its information throughput, i.e. capacity, can be improved. With this in mind, this work extends an existing network model of the communication system in order to reduce computation time, investigates the communicational limits of MEA systems and proposes a synthesis method for capacity maximization.

Abstract

This book offers a realistic, practical and accessible model to allow teachers to incorporate the best of recent brain-based research into their teaching. The five steps involve: making learning multi-sensory ensuring activities match the dominant intelligence of the learner matching types of learning to the gender of pupils using the lesson structure to fit the natural attention span of the brain managing the classroom environment to make it brain-friendly and active in supporting learning. Illustrated throughout with classroom examples from a wide range of subject areas, the book is highly practical in its focus and the ideas it contains can easily be adapted to work with all age ranges and types of school.

Abstract

Selecting and excerpting, summarizing and canonizing, arranging texts and visual signs in manuscripts appear to be universal practices. This volume analyses the fascinating vicissitudes of birth and development, growth and decrease, of manuscripts consisting of more texts (‘multiple-text manuscripts’), at the example of a vast array of manuscript cultures, from the Indian, African, Christian, Islamic, and European domains.

Abstract

The contactless detection of the presence and position of objects is required in many areas of the industry. Therefore, a three-dimensional measuring radar sensor, including corresponding methods for signal processing, is designed and realized. By exemplary measurement scenarios, the capability of the radar system for positioning and imaging of the environment in three dimensions is successfully demonstrated, which opens up new areas of application.

Abstract

In this work, an innovative real-time microwave control approach is proposed, to improve the temperature homogeneity under microwave heating. Multiple adaptive or intelligent control structures have been developed, including the model predictive control, neural network control and reinforcement learning control methods. Experimental results prove that these advanced control methods can effectively reduce the final temperature derivations and improve the temperature homogeneity.

Abstract

The type I interferon system plays a critical role in host defense in health, and a growing body of literature suggests that type I interferon is a critical mediator of human autoimmune disease. Type I interferons function as a bridge between the innate and adaptive immune systems, and as such play an important role in setting thresholds for response against self antigens. Many investigators have focused on the role type I interferons play in autoimmune disease. This fascinating and rapidly growing body of literature encompasses many different autoimmune diseases, including systemic lupus erythematosus, type I diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and others. In this Research Topic, we provide a comprehensive overview of the various roles type I interferons play in autoimmune diseases, with a focus on human immunology.

Abstract

Dear Readers,If you are engaged in the treatment of patients with MS (pwMS), this e-book’s aim is to offer novel insights to improve on an understanding of one of the major problems of pwMS: fatigue. Although there is increasing research into fatigue and its impact on MS, this collection of ten articles supports a better understanding of fatigue in MS patients. It explores pathophysiological concepts, provoking mechanisms, objective measurements, personality interactions, pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions and summarizes clinical management. It is written by neurologists, psychologists, scientists and therapists and addresses this group of people, who deal with pwMS in private, clinical, rehabilitation or scientific settings. Its aim is to communicate high-quality information, knowledge and experience on MS to healthcare professionals, while providing global support for the international MS community.
