Abstract

This volume presents the historical development of IUTAM, which began in Innsbruck in 1922 where the first IUTAM conference took place. These conferences have been held every four years with great success: the next will take place in Grenoble in 1988. This volume is dedicated to Professor Theodore von Karman (1881-1963), who has contributed greatly to the foundation of IUTAM.

Abstract

When Ludwig Prandtl took up the Chair of Applied Mechanics at Göttingen University in 1904, the small university town became the cradle of modern fluid mechanics and aerodynamics. Not only did Prandtl found two research institutions of worldwide renown, the Aerodynamische Versuchsanstalt (AVA) and the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Institut für Strömungsforschung, but with the so-called ‘Göttingen School’ he also established an exceptionally fertile line of scientific thinking, unique for its special balance of intuition for physics and mathematical precision. The scientific methods developed by Prandtl and his pupils are manifested in numerous dissertations, monographs and textbooks that now rate as classics and hence belong to the fundamental works on fluid mechanics. Yet many of these publications have long been out of print and inaccessible for study. The series Göttinger Klassiker der Strömungsmechanik is thus making available selected publications that emerged from Ludwig Prandtl’s ‘Göttingen School’ or stand in a particular historical relationship to it. This highly personal biography of Ludwig Prandtl compiled by his daughter, Johanna Vogel-Prandtl, is complemented by numerous photographs depicting Prandtl’s working and private life. It completes the picture of the founding father of modern fluid mechanics whose scientific importance continues to resonate to this day.

Abstract

The propulsion system behaviour is a key aspect for the overall dynamics of a ship. However, despite its great importance, numerical methodologies for detailed investigations on marine propulsion dynamics are not yet widely covered in scientific literature. This book presents the main steps for the development of a multi-physic simulation platform, able to represent the motions of a twin screw ship in six degrees of freedom, taking into account the whole propulsion system and automation effects. A number of mathematical sub-models had been developed and calibrated by a set of experimental tests, in model and full scale. Finally, the sea trials campaign of a ship is used to validate and tune the developed simulator. The proposed simulation methodology can be used in the ship preliminary design phase, in order to plan and test the propulsion system and automation. Further applications can include the design optimization and crew training.

Abstract

Stresses in the vicinity of the crack tips are responsible for failure of crack-containing components. The singular stress contribution is characterised by the stress intensity factor K, the first regular stress term is represented by the so-called T-stress. Whereas in the main volume, IKM 50, predominantly one-dimensional cracks were considered in homogeneous materials, this supplement volume compiles new results on one-dimensional and two-dimensional cracks.

Abstract

During the 1980’s there were many developments regarding the nonequilibrium statistical mechanics of dense classical atomic fluids. These developments have had a major impact on the computer simulation methods used to model nonequilibrium fluids. The present volume is, in part, an attempt to provide a pedagogical discussion of the statistical mechanical justification of these algorithms. There is a symbiotic relationship between theoretical nonequilibrium statistical mechanics on the one hand and the theory and practice of computer simulation on the other. Sometimes, the initiative for progress has been with the pragmatic requirements of computer simulation and at other times, the initiative has been with the fundamental theory of nonequilibrium processes. This book summarises progress in this field up to 1990.

Abstract

The book describes the hydraulic design and environmental impact prediction technologies for such installations. Focus are the hydrodynamics approached by computer models. First, a multiport diffuser design program was developed. Second, two model systems for discharge analysis, CORMIX for the near-field and intermediate-field and Delft3D for the far-field were coupled, and third a regulatory procedure is proposed to license and monitor outfall installations.

Abstract

Charge transport and charge transfer (CT) capabilities of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) are investigated. A QM/MM multi-scale framework is applied to calculate the CT capabilities of DNA under conditions resembling the experimental setup. The simulations are able to explain and predict the outcome of experiments and therefore make suggestions in advance. Based on the findings, suitable DNA sequences can be opted for the design of DNA-based devices as nano-scale electronic elements.

Abstract

The third edition of this article on the modelling and simulation of the flow in human hearts supplements earlier editions. It discusses the flow-structure coupled heart model KAHMO FSI (Karlsruhe Heart Model) and examines patient-specific clinical application of the heart model for cardiac surgery. The KAHMO heart model can be used to predict flow losses and flow structures due to pathalogical ventricle defects. These are considered before and after surgery.
