Abstract

In this work, novel methods are introduced for characterizing the thermal and electrochemical behavior of lithium ion cells. Based on these methods a modeling approach is introduced which allows for the discreet description of four separate domains (both static and dynamic electrochemical and thermal behaviors). The adaption to a wide variety of electrode materials, scalable accuracy and fully automatable parameterization are made possible by the strict separation of model domains.

Abstract

The model-aided cathode design for lithium ion batteries is presented, which enables a systematically minimization of loss processes and an increase of power and energy density. The cathode model is parametrized without values from literature by combining microstructure analysis via FIB/SEM tomography and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and finally validated.

Abstract

The energy management of battery electric vehicle is important for maximum utilisation of the battery. This book elaborates the requirements of the energy management and defines them as mathematical optimization problem. Strategies for the development process based on dynamic programming and for driving operation based on Pontryagin’s maximum principle are presented to consider all significant influences.

Abstract

The storage and conversion of energy is one of the major scientific challenges of the decades to come, with high stakes for the environment. What new materials will allow for more efficient and “cleaner” batteries to be developed? Jean-Marie Tarascon reviews these issues and their implications for our future and that of the planet. In particular, he discusses lithium-ion technology, the contribution of nanotechnologies, and current research using bio-inspired methods to develop innovations su...

Abstract

The storage of energy is one main bottle-neck of the german energy transition. The lithium-sulfur battery with its high theoretical specific values can here play a major role. Depending on the composition and production of the cathode, the electrochemical characteristics of the battery vary greatly. In this work, the influence of the cathode structure and composition was analysed in terms of capacity and lifetime of lithium-sulfur cells.

Abstract

To estimate the reachable specific energy and power of aqueous Li-air batteries, a physical based model was developed, which for the first time includes the microstructure of Li-air cells. Parameters like solid/liquid interface resistances were quantified with help of a newly developed setup. Simulations based on the developed model revealed that even conservative estimations promise an increase in the specific energy by at least a factor of two compared to present Li-ion batteries.

Abstract

Fracture of storage particles is considered to be one of the major reasons for capacity fade and increasing power loss in Li-ion batteries. In this work, we tackle the problem by merging a coupled model of mechanical stress and diffusion of Li-ions with a phase field description of an evolving crack. The novel approach allows us to study the evolution of the Li concentration together with the initiation and growth of a crack in an arbitrary geometry and without presuming a specific crack path.

Abstract

The Li-ion battery technology could help to accelerate the transition towards renewable energy sources. In the manufacturing chain, the electrode processing by slot die coating is one of the most crucial steps. Increased line speeds and reduced scrap rates could help decrease these costs. The scope of this work is therefore the scientific elaboration of the process limits of single and subdivided, simultaneous coated multilayer films, a minimizing of edge effects and intermittent coatings.

Abstract

In this book, a new procedure to analyze lithium-ion cells is introduced. The cells are disassembled to analyze their components in experimental cell housings. Then, Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy, time domain measurements and the Distribution function of Relaxation Times are applied to obtain a deep understanding of the relevant loss processes. This procedure yields a notable surplus of information about the electrode contributions to the overall internal resistance of the cell.

Abstract

In order to understand the current-voltage behaviour of a Lithium-Ion Battery, its impedance needs to be investigated in the low-frequency domain. This work deals with measurement, modelling and model validation in that low-frequency domain and introduces the Distribution-Function-of-Differential-Capacity (DDC) as a new tool for investigating capacity contributions of different particle sizes and particle types inside of a Lithium-Ion Battery.
