Abstract

Abstract

There are many industrial and medical applications of CO2 (λ=10.6 μm) and Nd:YAG (λ=1.06 μm) infrared lasers for which the quality of the process are tightly connected to the characteristic of the laser pulse. These two types of lasers deliver pulses with duration, repetition frequency and power that can be controlled by means of a programmable electronic control unit. An open-loop control generally optimize the process performances by availing of a laser system model. However, this method cannot control that during the operation the laser source and the optical delivering system could deteriorate; moreover the laser beam characteristics and laser pulse temporal envelope could change by several factors like power supply variations, optical beam misalignments, dirty deposits on mirrors, changes in laser efficiency and many others .

Abstract

In 1979 Tajima and Dawson, Tajima & Dawson (1979), on the basis of theoretical work and simulations, have shown that relativistic plasma waves are suitable for the development of compact accelerators. In the proposed schemes, electrons were injected externally and were accelerated through the very high electric field (GV/m) sustained by relativistic plasma waves driven by lasers, in the laser beatwave regime or in the laser wakefield regime. Several experiments have been performed following their idea and injected electrons at the few MeV level have indeed been accelerated by electric fields in the GV/m range in a plasma medium using the beat wave and laser wakefield schemes. With the development of more powerful lasers, much higher electric fields were achieved, from few GV/m to more than 1 TV/m, Malka et al. (2002).

Abstract

In this thesis, different laser based methods to produce high density peptide arrays were developed. They use laser radiation to structure special micro particles with amino acids. The particles are heated and fused to a substrate (Combinatorial Laser Fusing) or they are transferred trough a shock wave to another substrate (Combinatorial Laser Transfer). This way, microarrays with up to 1 million spots per cm² are produced whereas the number of chemical coupling cycles is minimized.

Abstract

This book discusses the mechanical and opto-electronic design of laser spectrometers for measuring two very important atmospheric gases, namely water vapor and its isotopic ratios, and formaldehyde. For measuring water vapor, shot-noise limited sensitivity has been achieved by a careful choice of system components and data processing. For measuring formaldehyde, a selective sample modulation exploiting the Stark effect has been used to greatly improve the sensitivity.

Abstract

From its initial publication titled Laser Beam Scanning in 1985 to Handbook of Optical and Laser Scanning, now in its second edition, this reference has kept professionals and students at the forefront of optical scanning technology. Carefully and meticulously updated in each iteration, the book continues to be the most comprehensive scanning resource on the market. It examines the breadth and depth of subtopics in the field from a variety of perspectives. The Second Edition covers: Technologies such as piezoelectric devices Applications of laser scanning such as Ladar (laser radar) Underwater scanning and laser scanning in CTP As laser costs come down, and power and availability increase, the potential applications for laser scanning continue to increase. Bringing together the knowledge and experience of 26 authors from England, Japan and the United States, the book provides an excellent resource for understanding the principles of laser scanning. It illustrates the significance of scanning in society today and would help the user get started in developing system concepts using scanning. It can be used as an introduction to the field and as a reference for persons involved in any aspect of optical and laser beam scanning.

Abstract

From the infinitely small to the infinitely big, covering over 60 spatial orders of magnitude, quantum theory is used as much to describe the still largely mysterious vibrations of the microscopic strings that could be the basic constituents of the Universe, as to explain the fluctuations of the microwave radiation reaching us from the depths of outer space. Serge Haroche tells us about the scientific theory that revolutionised our understanding of nature and made an extraordinary contributio...

Abstract

Solid-state lasers offer unique qualities in terms of flexibility, robustness, efficiency, and wavelength diversity. For these reasons, they are nowadays irreplaceable tools in many scientific and industrial applications. The engineering of new materials, the advances in photonics technologies, and the increasing demand for speed, cleanliness, and high-precision in industrial processes contribute to propel the research in this exciting and quickly developing field. Despite the impossibility to cover all the aspects of this very diversified topic in a single publication, this Special Issue "Solid State Lasers Materials, Technologies and Applications" offers an interesting insight into some of the latest developments in this field. Comprehensive review papers describe the state of the art of highly doped fiber lasers and amplifiers, deep-ultraviolet generation, and laser welding under vacuum with high-power lasers. Research articles present the latest results on picosecond pulse amplification, mid-infrared laser sources, parametric down-conversion modules, and coherent beam combining. Heavy-industry applications, such as laser welding and laser cladding, are also addressed.

Abstract

This work describes how human vision can be influenced at night time. In the first part, front lighting systems, that are already available on the market, are described and analyzed in terms of their positive effects on traffic safety. Furthermore this work is discussing, how traffic safety at night time has been increased since the introduction of high resolution headlamps.

Abstract

In this book we successfully demonstrate a millimeter-precision laser rangefinder using a low-cost photon counter. An application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) comprises timing circuitry and single-photon avalanche diodes (SPADs) as the photodetectors. For the timing circuitry, a novel binning architecture for sampling the received signal is proposed which mitigates non-idealities that are inherent to a system with SPADs and timing circuitry in one chip.
