Abstract

The connection between child development and gender can only be traced by analysing the complex interplay of many different individual and social, political and social, historical and cultural factors - it cannot be explored or empirically measured with the help of selective research. The current yearbook therefore presents theoretical, empirical-qualitative and empirically quantitative contributions and research reports that examine gender aspects of childhood life and learning.

Abstract

In kindergartens children of different religions and with different religious attitudes meet, play and learn together. How do kindergartens deal with religious differences and how do children address this topic? The ethnographic study reported in this book explores this question in two kindergartens, one run by a Catholic, the other by an Islamic organization. The results illustrate how important it is to handle religious difference attentively. In order to reduce structural discrimination, the author considers how a culture of recognition can be developed, with religious difference being given the attention it requires. This book provides a valuable contribution to a difference-sensitive interaction in educational institutions.

Abstract

The various phases of life and their manifestations in theory and social reality constitute a well-established area of research in the fields of western medieval studies and ancient history. In this respect the Byzantine East has been widely neglected. This volume will focus on the Byzantine experience of adolescence, which may be defined as the biological transition from childhood to adulthood as well as the social and psychological experience of leaving the care of parents, guardians and family groups and the gradual integration into adult society.

Abstract

The Millennium Studies seek to cross borders, boundaries between epochs and regional spaces, as well as boundaries between disciplines. Millennium is international, transdisciplinary and epoch-wide. The editorial board and the advisory board represent a broad spectrum of subjects: articles in art and literary criticism are just as right as historical, theological and philosophical contributions to the Latin and Greek cultures as well as to the oriental ones.

Abstract

In childhood and youth, an engagement with aesthetic modes of representation and perception is of great importance. The significance of aesthetic positionings – for instance through the choice of clothing or accessories, through make-up or gadgets – can on the one hand be interpreted as signs of a successful commercialization of childhood and youth. On the other hand, however, they testify to the savvy with which children and teenagers make their daily world their own and develop their design aesthetics. In order to consider the related social conditions of aesthetics, economies, and inter-generational relationships, this transdisciplinary volume brings together a range of research perspectives on everyday aesthetics in childhood and youth.
