Abstract

Natural hazards and anthropic activities threaten the human environment. The gathering of field data is needed so as to quantify the impact of such activities. To gather the necessary data researchers nowadays use a great variety of new instruments based on electronics. Yet, the working principles of this new instrumentation might not be well understood by some potential users. All operators of these new tools must gain proper insight so as to be able to judge whether the instrument is selected appropriately and functions adequately. This book attempts to demonstrate some characteristics that are not easy to understand by the uninitiated in the use of electronic instruments. The material presented in this book was prepared with the purpose of reflecting the technological changes that have occurred in environmental modern instrumentation in the last few decades. The book is intended for students of hydrology, hydraulics, oceanography, meteorology and environmental sciences. Basic concepts of electronics, special physics principles and signal processing are introduced in the first chapters in order to enable the reader to follow the topics developed in the book, without any prior knowledge of these matters. The instruments are explained in detail and several examples are introduced to show their measuring limitations. Enough mathematical fundamentals are given to allow the reader to reach a good quantitative knowledge.

Abstract

René Ghil fut autour de 1890 le plus soudainement célèbre, le plus admiré, le plus contesté, le plus violemment haï, puis le plus injustement oublié des auteurs de la génération symboliste : précisément parce qu'il s'avéra l'adversaire le plus irréductible du Symbolisme. Il rompit très tôt avec Mallarmé sur la question de l'Idéalisme, auquel il opposait une vaste métaphysique de la Matière en évolution vers un « Mieux », inspirée des cosmogonies orientales autant que de la science occidentale contemporaine (Darwin). Sa théorie de l'« Instrumentation verbale », basée sur un sensualisme linguistique inspiré des théories sur le langage de Rousseau et des recherches récentes en acoustique et en phonétique expérimentales (Helmholtz), eut un impact considérable : des futuristes russes et italiens à Breton ou Aragon, voire aux lettristes dissidents Jean-Louis Brau et François Dufrêne, pionniers de la Poésie sonore. Si les versions successives de son précoce et effervescent Traité du Verbe, devenu En Méthode à l'Œuvre, ont fait l'objet d'innombrables commentaires, certes point toujours amènes, ses traités plus tardifs, consacrés à la « Poésie scientifique », ont fait beaucoup moins de bruit et sont restés largement ignorés ; ils représentent pourtant les états les plus aboutis, et les plus personnels, d'une pensée aussi intransigeante que singulière, parvenue à une ferme maturité. Pour toutes ces raisons, ils méritent aujourd'hui d'être lus, et, en dehors des clichés tenaces, de contribuer aux débats actuels sur la poésie, dans ses rapports avec la connaissance et la chose publique…

Abstract

Ce livre s’inscrit dans la dynamique d’un projet de construction d’une instrumentation en sciences humaines et sociales dans le domaine de l’éducation. Il est né de la réflexion menée dans le cadre du projet Vidéos de situations d’enseignement et d’apprentissage, qui a pour objectif de développer un réseau de recherche autour d’une base de données d’enregistrements vidéographiques en lien étroit avec la vie de la communauté scientifique. Ce projet a rapidement soulevé des questions théoriques et méthodologiques très importantes comme la nature des données vidéo et leur lien avec les textes, la diversité des courants théoriques, leurs spécificités et leur complémentarité, le développement de méthodologies de constitution et d’analyse de corpus. Les premiers chapitres du présent ouvrage présentent trois courants de recherche relatifs à la manière dont chacun articule un point de vue théorique et des choix méthodologiques d’analyse des enregistrements vidéo. Puis viennent deux chapitres qui traitent des méthodologies de constitution et d’analyse de corpus vidéo. Un chapitre est dédié à l’instrument ViSA, les étapes de sa création, les principaux choix techniques et organisationnels. Enfin, le dernier chapitre dévoile l’important travail réflexif engagé par la communauté de chercheurs sur ses propres pratiques de recherche, dans une perspective interdisciplinaire. Cet ouvrage ouvre des perspectives épistémologique, méthodologique, réflexive sur l’instrumentation et l’analyse de corpus.

Abstract

Micro and nano-electro-mechanical system (M/NEMS) devices constitute key technological building blocks to enable increased additional functionalities within Integrated Circuits (ICs) in the More-Than-Moore era, as described in the International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors. The CMOS ICs and M/NEMS dies can be combined in the same package (SiP), or integrated within a single chip (SoC). In the SoC approach the M/NEMS devices are monolithically integrated together with CMOS circuitry allowing the development of compact and low-cost CMOS-M/NEMS devices for multiple applications (physical sensors, chemical sensors, biosensors, actuators, energy actuators, filters, mechanical relays, and others). On-chip CMOS electronics integration can overcome limitations related to the extremely low-level signals in sub-micrometer and nanometer scale electromechanical transducers enabling novel breakthrough applications. This Special Issue aims to gather high quality research contributions dealing with MEMS and NEMS devices monolithically integrated with CMOS, independently of the final application and fabrication approach adopted (MEMS-first, interleaved MEMS, MEMS-last or others).]

Abstract

Microfluidics-based devices play an important role in creating realistic microenvironments in which cell cultures can thrive. They can, for example, be used to monitor drug toxicity and perform medical diagnostics, and be in a static-, perfusion- or droplet-based device. They can also be used to study cell-cell, cell-matrix or cell-surface interactions. Cells can be either single cells, 3D cell cultures or co-cultures. Other organisms could include bacteria, zebra fish embryo, C. elegans, to name a few.

Abstract

Various cosmological observations support not only cosmological inflation in the early universe, which is also known as exponential cosmic expansion, but also that the expansion of the late-time universe is accelerating. To explain this phenomenon, the existence of dark energy is proposed. In addition, according to the rotation curve of galaxies, the existence of dark matter, which does not shine, is also suggested. If primordial gravitational waves are detected in the future, the mechanism for realizing inflation can be revealed. Moreover, there exist two main candidates for dark matter. The first is a new particle, the existence of which is predicted in particle physics. The second is an astrophysical object which is not found by electromagnetic waves. Furthermore, there are two representative approaches to account for the accelerated expansion of the current universe. One is to assume the unknown dark energy in general relativity. The other is to extend the gravity theory to large scales. Investigation of the origins of inflation, dark matter, and dark energy is one of the most fundamental problems in modern physics and cosmology. The purpose of this book is to explore the physics and cosmology of inflation, dark matter, and dark energy.

Abstract

Research on radiation-tolerant electronics has increased rapidly over the past few years, resulting in many interesting approaches to modeling radiation effects and designing radiation-hardened integrated circuits and embedded systems. This research is strongly driven by the growing need for radiation-hardened electronics for space applications, high-energy physics experiments such as those on the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, and many terrestrial nuclear applications including nuclear energy and nuclear safety. With the progressive scaling of integrated circuit technologies and the growing complexity of electronic systems, their susceptibility to ionizing radiation has raised many exciting challenges, which are expected to drive research in the coming decade. In this book we highlight recent breakthroughs in the study of radiation effects in advanced semiconductor devices, as well as in high-performance analog, mixed signal, RF, and digital integrated circuits. We also focus on advances in embedded radiation hardening in both FPGA and microcontroller systems and apply radiation-hardened embedded systems for cryptography and image processing, targeting space applications.

Abstract
