Abstract

This book is open access under a CC-BY license.
Moral dilemmas are a pervasive feature of working life. Moral Reasoning at Work offers a fresh perspective on how to live with them. How do we cope with situations where no matter what we decide to do, something will be wrong? How do we live with the moral dissonance between what we are tempted to do and what is in line with our moral convictions? What can organizations do to establish a foundation for responsible decision-making and conduct? This book combines research streams from ethics and moral psychology using extensive experience of sessions of moral reasoning with leaders and employees in organizations. It argues that there is a need to go beyond compliance and traditional approaches to ethics in order to prepare decision-makers for moral dilemmas. Organizations can do that by encouraging people to become actively and regularly involved in moral reasoning at work.

Abstract

"Caritas, which is inherent in health care, is also not a countercategory to economy, i.e. to economic activity, just as the management of social responsibility is not limited to the moderation (apparently) opposing interests of patients, employees and providers. On the contrary: In the hospital - as in any other business organization - social responsibility must be defined as a strategic task to strengthen competitiveness and manage changes and to be implemented permanently in terms of personnel and institutions. - How can the actors in a hospital assume and implement social responsibility and at the same time ensure sustainable performance? - Who are the different stakeholders and which positions and aspects have to be taken into account in which business decisions? - What are the measures for socially responsible action and thus the target values and fields of action of the responsible persons? - What are the personnel and institutional requirements for managing social responsibility? These questions are presented in an implementation-oriented manner and supplemented by practical examples for the development and implementation of a new management of social responsibility."

Abstract

This open access book discusses transnational trade union cooperation in Europe – its forms, focuses, conditions, and obstacles. It provides an overview of existing trade union cooperation and includes detailed analyses of two specific questions: the debates on statutory minimum wages and the Posting of Workers Directive. Drawing on empirical research, the authors take a comparative approach, considering national industrial relations regimes as well as individual sectors. With the ongoing processes of integration in Europe, it has become increasingly important for unions to cooperate with regard to employers and EU institutions. The authors illustrate the interconnections between national and European industrial relations, and explore the process of European integration in labour markets. Illustrating the potential for and difficulties involved in deepening trade union cooperation across Europe, this work is a vital read for trade unionists, researchers and students interested in European trade unionism and labour markets.
