Abstract

In a world where energy conservation, environmental protection and sustainable development are growing concerns, the development of electric vehicle (EV) and hybrid EV (HEV) technologies has taken on an accelerated pace. This collection entitled “Electric and Hybrid Vehicles” invites articles that address the state-of-the-art technologies and new developments for EVs and HEVs, including but not limited to energy sources, electric powertrains, hybrid powertrains, energy management systems, energy refueling systems, regenerative braking systems, system integration, system optimization and infrastructure. Articles which deal with the latest hot topics for EVs and HEVs are particularly encouraged such as advanced lithium-ion batteries, ultracapacitors, energy-efficient motor drives, bidirectional power converters, integrated-starter-generator systems, electric variable transmission systems, on-board renewable energy, inductive or wireless charging technology, and vehicle-to-grid technology. As the impact of the use of EVs and HEVs on our daily lives is utmost important, articles which deal with the relationships between the use of EVs or HEVs and the energy, environment and economy would be of particular interest.

Abstract

This book provides selected results from the accompanying research of the project CROME. The vision of the project was to create and test a safe, seamless, user-friendly and reliable mobility with electric vehicles between France and Germany as a prefiguration of a pan-European electric mobility system. Major aims were contributions to the European standardisation process of charging infrastructure for electric mobility and corresponding services, and to provide an early customer feedback.

Abstract

This work systematically describes the mechanisms of tyre/road noise atdriving and braking torque based on measurements with different tyres. The studies on the influence of circumferential force on tyre/road noise can be divided into two different tire tread designs. One sub-chapter reports about a selective influence of force induced tyre/road noise using inclined groove edges. The influence of the circumferential stiffness of the tread blocks on the tyre/road noise is discussed afterwards.

Abstract

The link between drivetrain topology and energy consumption for all electric sports cars is analyzed. The drivetrain topology is varied along with the characteristics of the used components to find a system optimum instead of a component optimum. Design Space Exploration is used to explore the interactions between drivetrain topologies and component characteristics for different sports cars and driving cycles. Finally, design rules for efficient and high-performing drivetrains were derived.

Abstract

The book at hand shows possibilities to derive requirements from customers’ usage behaviour based on recorded vehicle data. The focus lies on the derivation of mobility and driving profiles for a computer aided calculation of the fuel consumption. On this basis, the calculated fuel consumption is integrated into the creation of life cycle assessments and total cost of ownership calculations in order to evaluate vehicle concepts.

Abstract

Wireless inductive charging improves user acceptance of electric vehicles, as it allows for a comfortable charging process. A mature inductive power transfer solution has to fulfill various requirements. In order to meet the various demands, at first, an appropriate structure of the magnetic coupler system has to be selected according to the specific case of application Afterwards, a comprehensive design methodology allows a fast and efficient dimensioning of the particular coil topology.

Abstract

The book continues with an experimental analysis conducted to obtain accurate and complete information about electric vehicles in different traffic situations and road conditions. For the experimental analysis in this study, three different electric vehicles from the Edinburgh College leasing program were equipped and tracked to obtain over 50 GPS and energy consumption data for short distance journeys in the Edinburgh area and long-range tests between Edinburgh and Bristol. In the following section, an adaptive and robust square root cubature Kalman filter based on variational Bayesian approximation and Huber’s M-estimation is proposed to accurately estimate state of charge (SOC), which is vital for safe operation and efficient management of lithium-ion batteries. A coupled-inductor DC-DC converter with a high voltage gain is proposed in the following section to match the voltage of a fuel cell stack to a DC link bus. Finally, the book presents a review of the different approaches that have been proposed by various authors to mitigate the impact of electric buses and electric taxis on the future smart grid.

Abstract

Climate change, urban air quality, and dependency on crude oil are important societal challenges. In the transportation sector especially, clean and energy efficient technologies must be developed. Electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) have gained a growing interest in the vehicle industry. Nowadays, the commercialization of EVs and PHEVs has been possible in different applications (i.e., light duty, medium duty, and heavy duty vehicles) thanks to the advances in energy storage systems, power electronics converters (including DC/DC converters, DC/AC inverters, and battery charging systems), electric machines, and energy efficient power flow control strategies. This book is based on the Special Issue of the journal Applied Sciences on “Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs)”. This collection of research articles includes topics such as novel propulsion systems, emerging power electronics and their control algorithms, emerging electric machines and control techniques, energy storage systems, including BMS, and efficient energy management strategies for hybrid propulsion, vehicle-to-grid (V2G), vehicle-to-home (V2H), grid-to-vehicle (G2V) technologies, and wireless power transfer (WPT) systems.
