Der Autor arbeitet heraus, dass die Bewältigung dieser Erfahrungen entscheidend für den erfolgreichen Abschluss der Ausbildung ist. Er zeigt auf, dass starkes Interesse an der beruflichen Tätigkeit, hohe Selbstkompetenzen und unterstützende Personen für Lernende in Minderheitenpositionen wichtig für den Aufbau eines beruflichen Habitus sind.

Abstract

Through narrative interviews with younger adults and their parents ,
this paper explores how the housing transitions of younger adults,
both within the rental sector and into homeownership, are shaped
through intergenerational intra-family support in Germany’s
society of renters. Our fi ndings highlight the profound qualitative
diff erences between regular transfers for establishing and retaining
residential independence in the rental sector and inter vivos gifts for
house purchase. Where the former support type is given and taken
unconditionally, transfers for house purchase follow a diff erent
logic and carry diff erent meanings. Being a necessary condition for
property acquisition at young age, they have the power to completely
rebalance family relations and undermine younger adults’ autonomy
accordingly. In an aggregate perspective, our study further suggests
increasing socio-spatial inequalities within the younger generation
which run along both class and spatial origin, sharply dividing the
housing market opportunities of ‘original Berliners’ and those who
have moved to the city from more affl uent regions in Germany.

Abstract

Explaining Criminal Careers presents a simple quantitative theory of crime, conviction and reconviction, the assumptions of the theory are derived directly from a detailed analysis of cohort samples drawn from the “UK Home Office” Offenders Index (OI). Mathematical models based on the theory, together with population trends, are used to make: exact quantitative predictions of features of criminal careers; aggregate crime levels; the prison population; and to explain the age-crime curve, alternative explanations are shown not to be supported by the data. Previous research is reviewed, clearly identifying the foundations of the current work. Using graphical techniques to identify mathematical regularities in the data, recidivism (risk) and frequency (rate) of conviction are analysed and modelled. These models are brought together to identify three categories of offender: high-risk / high-rate, high-risk / low-rate and low-risk / low-rate. The theory is shown to rest on just 6 basic assumptions. Within this theoretical framework the seriousness of offending, specialisation or versatility in offence types and the psychological characteristics of offenders are all explored suggesting that the most serious offenders are a random sample from the risk/rate categories but that those with custody later in their careers are predominantly high-risk/high-rate. In general offenders are shown to be versatile rather than specialist and can be categorised using psychological profiles. The policy implications are drawn out highlighting the importance of conviction in desistance from crime and the absence of any additional deterrence effect of imprisonment. The use of the theory in evaluation of interventions is demonstrated.

Abstract

Shifts in the age composition of the workforce coupled with dynamic definitions of retirement represent important issues that influence work processes and, more generally, the experience of working across one’s career. For example, redefinitions of careers and the changing nature of working have contributed to the emergence of distinct forms and patterns of work experiences across the prototypical work lifespan. Likewise, older individuals are increasingly delaying retirement in favor of longer-term labor force participation. The study of age and work, and work and retirement by industrial, work, and organizational (IWO) psychologists and scholars of human resources management and organizational behavior (HR/OB) has recently proliferated in part as a result of such trends, along with the recognition that age-related processes are important indicators of various proximal (e.g., job attitudes, work behaviors, work motives, and wellbeing) and distal outcomes (e.g., sustainable employability, climates for aging, and firm performance) at various levels of abstraction in modern work environments.Recent theoretical advances have suggested that age, along with individual psychological factors and various contextual influences can jointly influence work outcomes that contribute to long-term employment success, including work performance, job attitudes, work orientations, and motivations. Similar theoretical developments concerning retirement have postulated individual and contextual elements that drive success in the transition from career and work roles to non-work and leisure as well as post-retirement bridge employment roles.In this Research Topic, we aim to curate a collection of papers that are representative of current trends and advances in thinking about and investigating the role of age in workplace processes and the changing nature of retirement. Our hope is to showcase various contemporary ideas and rigorous empirical studies as a means to inform broader thinking and to support enhanced theorizing and organizational practice regarding these processes.
