Abstract

Among medical imaging modalities, such as computed tomography (CT) andmagnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound imaging stands out due to itstemporal resolution. Owing to the nature of medical ultrasound imaging, it has beenused for not only observation of the morphology of living organs but also functionalimaging, such as blood flow imaging and evaluation of the cardiac function. Ultrafastultrasound imaging, which has recently become widely available, significantlyincreases the opportunities for medical functional imaging. Ultrafast ultrasoundimaging typically enables imaging frame-rates of up to ten thousand frames persecond (fps). Due to the extremely high temporal resolution, this enablesvisualization of rapid dynamic responses of biological tissues, which cannot beobserved and analyzed by conventional ultrasound imaging. This Special Issueincludes various studies of improvements to the performance of ultrafast ultrasound

Abstract

In this thesis methods are presented to optimize the radiation characteristic of holographic antennas for the usage with frequency-modulated radar modules (FMCW principle). This combination allows the simultaneous measuring of distance and angular position to targets within a scenario, due to the frequency-scanning property of this antenna type. This work focuses on the design of the integrated, holographic antennas and their optimization in terms of important system parameters.

Abstract

The contactless detection of the presence and position of objects is required in many areas of the industry. Therefore, a three-dimensional measuring radar sensor, including corresponding methods for signal processing, is designed and realized. By exemplary measurement scenarios, the capability of the radar system for positioning and imaging of the environment in three dimensions is successfully demonstrated, which opens up new areas of application.

Abstract

Ultrasound medical imaging stands out among the other diagnostic imaging modalities for its patient-friendliness, high temporal resolution, low cost, and absence of ionizing radiation. On the other hand, it may still suffer from limited detail level, low signal-to-noise ratio, and narrow field-of-view. In the last decade, new beamforming and image reconstruction techniques have emerged which aim at improving resolution, contrast, and clutter suppression, especially in difficult-to-image patients. Nevertheless, achieving a higher image quality is of the utmost importance in diagnostic ultrasound medical imaging, and further developments are still indispensable. From this point of view, a crucial role can be played by novel beamforming techniques as well as by non-conventional image formation techniques (e.g., advanced transmission strategies, and compounding, coded, and harmonic imaging). This Special Issue includes novel contributions on both ultrasound beamforming and image formation techniques, particularly addressed at improving B-mode image quality and related diagnostic content. This indeed represents a hot topic in the ultrasound imaging community, and further active research in this field is expected, where many challenges still persist.

Abstract

The millimeter-wave frequency band (30–300 GHz) is considered a potential candidate to host very high data rate communications. First used for high capacity radio links and then for broadband indoor wireless networks, the interest in this frequency band has increased as it is proposed to accommodate future 5G mobile communication systems. The large bandwidth available will enable a number of new uses for 5G. In addition, due to the large propagation attenuation, this frequency band may provide some additional advantages regarding frequency reuse and communication security. However, a number of issues have to be addressed to make mm-wave communications viable. This book collects a number of contributions that present solutions to these challenges.
