Abstract

"The chapter analyzes teaching where the goal is to enable students at the
Armed Forces Staff College to master unforeseen events. The students are all participants
in a program for joint operations in which different military branches are placed
together to solve complex tasks. How can the supervisor contribute to increased
samhandling when facing the unforeseen? The goal is for students to be able to cope
with the roles that exist in a normal NATO headquarters and to learn how to use
NATO’s operational planning strategy. The group supervisor becomes a form of
master who greatly influences the approach of students to the training community.
From a sample of one hundred students, five groups consisting of four to five students
of both sexes, with varied defense-force affiliations, backgrounds and experience
were selected to be interviewed. A total of 23 informants participated in the
interviews. In addition, observations were carried out. Apprenticeship Learning as a
method is appropriate to prepare the students better for samhandling in anticipation
of the unforeseen. The way the supervisor manages his or her role has a great deal of
impact on samhandling and learning outcomes. The supervisor’s insight and expertise
in what is needed to make groups work together is decisive. Strengthening and
developing samhandling in exercises is a suitable educational method for military
forces in meeting unforeseen events, provided that it is done properly."

Abstract

How does the current labour market training system function and whose interests does it serve? In this introductory textbook, Bob Barnetson wades into the debate between workers and employers, and governments and economists to investigate the ways in which labour power is produced and reproduced in Canadian society. After sifting through the facts and interpretations of social scientists and government policymakers, Barnetson interrogates the training system through analysis of the political and economic forces that constitute modern Canada. Abstract

In Switzerland, "Lehrbetriebsverbünde" (apprenticeship company networks) represent a new model of vocational training. The author shows that the project-based organisation of this form of basic vocational training, in which learners change companies several times, constitutes new mechanisms of social inequality in the field of basic vocational training. This is due to the fact that training company networks place substantially higher demands on the self-organisation and flexibility of learners than traditional apprenticeships. A confident handling of these requirements requires specific prerequisites and resources that are unequally distributed in terms of social structure. Nevertheless, training company networks also offer the opportunity to reduce social inequality. The prerequisite for this is that training company networks do not presuppose the unevenly distributed key competences such as flexibility and self-organisation, which are fundamental to working life, as skills, but rather systematically impart them during training. In addition, framework conditions must be created which make it possible for learners from less privileged backgrounds to master the challenges of collaborative training.

Abstract

The Swiss vocational education and training model is at the heart of an unprecedented enthusiasm. Both in Switzerland and abroad, it is praised for its management based on a public-private partnership, for its ability to integrate a large number of young people in beyond mandatory education and, finally, for the quality of the training provided which is in line with the labour market needs. Abstract

The emphasis on subject knowledge in primary curricula is a world-wide phenomenon and has become increasingly the focus of attention in England, with the introduction of the National Curriculum and the appointment of subject co-ordinators in schools. Yet what exactly constitutes a subject and its practice remains controversial. The book is organised into five parts. Part one examines the general aims of primary education, in order to give a background for a more detailed exploration of UK curriculum development. Parts two, three and four examine the core subjects of Eng, science and mathematics, whilst constantly bearing in mind the full range of views about the purpose of education and the nature of knowledge. Part five introduces key debates about approaches to knowledge, and raises issues about the future organisation of the curriculum.
