Abstract

• Zinc (Zn) is an essential micronutrient that contributes to the proper functioning of over 300 enzymes and multiple biochemical and structural processes in the body. Zinc functions in the regulation of an extensive variety of genes, such as those involved in nucleic acid metabolism, cell signalling, apoptosis, and plays an integral role in immune system functioning. Even a mild Zn deficiency can profoundly affect growth and development, as well as impede immune differentiation and maturation. Zinc is widely distributed in foods, however, it was demonstrated that dietary constituents, such as phytate, polyphenols, and the intestinal microbiome, affect its dietary bioavailability and intestinal absorption. Regulation of zinc metabolism is achieved through a balance of absorption and excretion and involves adaptive mechanisms. The aim of this Special Issue is to explore dietary approaches that aim to improve Zn bioavailability and absorption, biomarkers of status, and the effect of Zn status on the intestinal microbiome.

Abstract

Please describe the book in straightforward and consumer-friendly terms.[The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that approximately one-third of worldwide infant deaths, and one half in developing countries, can be attributed to malnutrition. More specifically, iron (Fe) deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency worldwide and a major cause of infant mortality. Fe deficiency is particularly widespread in low-income countries because of a general lack of consumption of animal products (which can promote non-heme Fe absorption and contain highly bioavailable heme Fe) coupled with a high consumption of a monotonous diet of cereal grains and legumes. Such diets are low in bioavailable Fe due to the presence of phytic acid and certain polyphenols that are inhibitors of Fe bioavailability. Diets with chronically poor Fe bioavailability which result in high prevalence of Fe deficiency and anemia, increase the risk of all-cause child mortalities and also may lead to many pathophysiological consequences including stunted growth, low birth weight, delayed mental development and motor functioning, among others. Thus, a crucial step in alleviating Fe deficiency anemia is through understanding how specific dietary practices and components contribute to the Fe status in a particular region where Fe deficiency is prevalent. The aim of this Special Issue is to report on the recent advances and research developments related to the improvements of dietary Fe bioavailability and absorption in an effort to alleviate dietary Fe deficiency.]

Abstract

In this work, the physiological effects of time-varying magnetic fields up to 100 kHz have been investigated, namely magnetic stimulation and body warming. Simulation studies were based on numerical calculations on sophisticated cell and body models. In addition, magnetic stimulation thresholds have been determined experimentally.The project was carried out within the scope of the development of Magnetic Particle Imaging, a new imaging technology for medical diagnostics.

Abstract

In this book, the first high-speed silicon-organic hybrid (SOH) modulator is demonstrated by exploiting a highly-nonlinear polymer cladding and a silicon waveguide. By using a liquid crystal cladding instead, an ultra-low power phase shifter is obtained. A third type of device is proposed for achieving three-wave mixing on the silicon-organic hybrid (SOH) platform. Finally, new physical constants which describe the optical absorption in charge accumulation/inversion layers in silicon are determined.

Abstract

This work presents three new quantitative methods for magnetic resonance imaging. A method for simultaneous mapping of B1 and T1 (MTM) is developed and validated. Electric Properties Tomography (EPT), a method for quantitative imaging of dielectric properties of tissue, is presented. Based on EPT, separate (phase-based) conductivity and (amplitude-based) permittivity measurements are introduced. Finally, a B1-based method for patient-specific local SAR measurements is presented.

Abstract

Parallel transmission enables control of the RF field in high-field Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). However, the approach has also caused concerns about the specific absorption rate (SAR) in the patient body. The present work provides new concepts for SAR prediction. A novel approach for generating human body models is proposed, based on a water-fat separated MRI pre-scan. Furthermore, this work explores various approaches for SAR reduction.

Abstract

The work describes a method for the determination of the conversion by radical photopolymerization of acrylic coatings that is suitable for an in situ monitoring during the coating process.The applied method is based on the 1620 nm overtone absorption of the acrylate end group. The capability of the sensor to discriminate between polymerized and unpolymerized coatings on metal substrates down to a coating thickness of less than 16µm is demonstrated and and proved by reference measurements.

Abstract

This book presents some of the state-of-the-art methods for the study of the gastrointestinal variables affecting oral drug absorption. Practical applications of new in vitro release/dissolution methods are presented, as well as in vitro permeability studies to explore segmental differences. The application of MRI methods for the study of colon physiology is presented to illustrate its potential applications in controlled release dosage form design. Some examples of successful in vitro–in vivo correlations show how implementing the gastrointestinal physiological variables in the new in vitro methods can improve the predictions of in vivo drug product performance. The book contains an updated review of the experimental, computational, and in vivo approaches for measuring intestinal permeability.
