Abstract

The main purpose of this volume is to demonstrate, through a variety of texts covering a vast historical period and from diverse sources (parliamentary reports, letters, memoirs, excerpts of books, newspaper articles, oral testimonies, and related materials) that Scotland cannot be reduced to the traditional images of kilt and bagpipe. The author has often chosen to let common people speak-those people whose voice is seldom heard in traditional history books. Any book written about the history of the Scottish nation that would leave aside such significant events as the Union of Parliaments in 1707, the Jacobite risings of the first half of the 18th century, the Highland clearances, or the process of devolution would most definitely be described as incomplete. But a book about the history of Scotland in which the voices of the elites would be the only ones to be heard would be just as incomplete. The author hopes that his “wandering among words written by others” in temples to knowledge such as the National Archives of Scotland and the National Library of Scotland will ultimately lend new life to those fragments of the past without which it is impossible to understand the present.

Abstract

Motion pictures are made, not mass produced, requiring a remarkable collection of skills, self-discipline, and sociality—all of which are sources of enormous pride among Hollywood’s craft and creative workers. The interviews collected here showcase the pleasures that attract people to careers in film and television. They also reflect critically on changes in the workplace brought about by corporate conglomeration and globalization. Rather than offer publicity-friendly anecdotes by marquee celebrities, Voices of Labor presents off-screen observations about the everyday realities of Global Hollywood. Ranging across job categories—from showrunner to make-up artist to location manager—this collection features voices of labor from Los Angeles, Atlanta, Prague, and Vancouver. Together they show how abstract concepts like conglomeration, financialization, and globalization are crucial tools for understanding contemporary Hollywood and for reflecting more generally on changes and challenges in the screen media workplace and our culture at large.

Abstract

What does it mean to work in the retail sector today? In Switzerland, two giants share almost the whole market. In order to stay competitive, they intensify the work, demand more availability from their employees and deskill certain positions. How do the store managers achieve profitability objectives despite the constraints in this context? How do the cashiers cope with the increasing automation of their jobs? How do the shelf workers reconcile customer contact with ever-increasing time constraints? This book explains how neoliberal working time patterns are taking place in the supermarkets and questions the evolution of the working day in our society. The study is based on 78 interviews with managers, shop floor workers and union officers. Nicola Cianferoni is a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Geneva and the University of Neuchâtel in Switzerland.
