Abstract

I. S. Turgenev's predilection for the use of quotes, but also for allusions to other arts, such as painting or music, is not to be overlooked. Recent research has repeatedly pointed to the intertextuality of Turgenev. The novella "Faust" and the sketch "Gamlet Ščigrovskogo uezda" from the cycle "Zapiski ochotnika" are suitable objects of investigation inasmuch as they have significant similarities both in their intertextuality and in the structure of the text. The parallels begin with the clear marking of the intertextual reference in the title and range from similarities in the narrative form to thematic and argumentative equivalences.

Abstract

Written between 1855 and 1862, the four novels "Rudin", "A Nest o f the Gentry", "On the Eve" and "Fathers and Sons" are generally recognised as Turgenev's most notable contribution to Russian and world literature. Are they primarily social chronicles, as Turgenev suggested, or are they rather to be seen as celebrations of life, of the beauty of love and youthful idealism? Are they paens to the nobility of the human spirit or ironic comments on human folly? The same questions are addressed in the present study, but the question with which it is principally concerned is that of the novels' essential character.

Abstract

Few readers of the works of the Russian author Ivan Turgenev are aware of the fact that he occasionally engaged in the writing of libretti. Even fewer people realize that Turgenev was interested in libretti-both theoretically and in practice- for much of his literary career. No attempt has yet been made to study his libretti in their essential context, that of Pauline Viardot׳s music. The present two-part study represent an effort at considering this apect of his life and work. It is based primarily on le Dernier Sorcier [The Last Sorcerer], arguably the best and most important of the Turgenev—Viardot operettas.
