Abstract

An intensive exploration of the changes experienced by the Comanches and Caddoans during Spain's occupation of the Southern Plains (1689-1921), McCollough focuses on the relationship between political and economic conditions and patterns of settlement, production and social reproduction. Challenging historical views that structure a dichotomy of the colonizers and the colonized, this study examines global, regional and local populations as it details the points of interface between Euro-American markets, Native American commodities and indigenous social groups in this early colonial period.

»Wir verstehen die Amerikaner nicht mehr« - diese im Gefolge von 9/11 und dem Irakkrieg oft vernehmbare Äußerung motiviert dazu, mit feldforschendem Blick amerikanische Alltagspraktiken in Augenschein zu nehmen - in seinem symbolischen Zentrum: dem Bundesstaat Texas. Die USA haben sich in den letzten zehn Jahren und insbesondere durch die (Wieder-)Wahl von Präsident George W. Bush zunehmend »texanisiert«, sowohl in der Fremdwahrnehmung als auch in der Diskussion um Identität innerhalb der USA. Texas wird in den europäischen Medien als »Hort des Bösen« repräsentiert. Dieses Buch bietet eine Innensicht des großen Bundesstaates, indem verschiedene Aspekte der Alltagskultur - vom Umgang mit Landschaft und den Ernährungsgewohnheiten über die Waffenkultur bis hin zum Nationalheiligtum »Alamo« - näher vorgestellt und in Beziehung zu Konzeptionen von Individuum, Gemeinschaft und Gesellschaft, Staat und Nation gesetzt werden. Der Autor lebte zwei Jahre in Texas und führte dort eine ethnologische Feldforschung zum Thema »Texanische Identität« durch.

Abstract

Global crop production must substantially increase to meet the needs of a rapidly growing population. This is constrained by the availability of nutrients, water, and land. There is also an urgent need to reduce the negative environmental impacts of crop production. Collectively, these issues represent one of the greatest challenges of the twenty-first century. Sustainable cropping systems based on ecological principles are the core of integrated approaches to solve this critical challenge. This special issue provides an international basis for revealing the underlying mechanisms of sustainable cropping systems to drive agronomic innovations. It includes review and original research articles that report novel scientific findings on improvement in cropping systems related to crop yields and their resistance to biotic and abiotic stressors, resource use efficiency, environmental impact, sustainability, and ecosystem services.
