Abstract

In the last few years, the society is witnessing ever-growing levels of complexity in the optimization paradigms lying at the core of different applications and processes. This augmented complexity has motivated the adoption of heuristic methods as a means to balance the Pareto trade-off between computational efficiency and the quality of the produced solutions to the problem at hand. The momentum gained by heuristics in practical applications spans further towards hyper-heuristics, which allow constructing ensembles of simple heuristics to handle efficiently several problems of a single class. In this context, this short book compiles selected applications of heuristics and hyper-heuristics for combinatorial optimization problems, including scheduling and other assorted application scenarios.

Abstract

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have emerged as a phenomenon of the twenty-first century with numerous kinds of sensor being developed for specific applications. The origins of WSNs can, however, be traced back to the early days of connectivity between computers and their peripherals. Work with distributed sensor networks is evidenced in the literature during the latter part of the 1970s, continuing in functionality increases in the 1980s and 1990s. As a configuration of independent devices in a data communications network, WSNs are now pre-eminent as working solutions to numerous precision data collection situations where software control of instruments and routing protocols are needed. In this book, the authors have chosen a selection of specific topics relating to WSNs: their design, development, implementation and function. Some operating topics are addressed such as power management, data interchange protocols, instrument reliability and system security. Other topics are more application oriented, where particular hardware and software configurations are described to deliver system solutions for specific needs. All are clearly written with considerable detail relating to each of the issues addressed by the authors. Each of the chapters provides a rationale for the topic being covered and some general WSN details where appropriate. The citations used in the chapters are comprehensively referred to, which adds depth to the information being presented.

Abstract

Radio-frequency identification (RFID) is one of the modern names that is becoming increasingly popular, as a result of many years of researches and investigations. Powerful hardware and software tools have contributed, and still do, to place the radio-frequency identification as a popular and widely used technology, from large corporations to individuals, and custom applications. Although RFID offers many advantages over other technologies, it is essential to be aware of its limitations. Therefore, it will be possible to overcome the limitations and to increase its applications. As an example, cost, safety, security, transmissions formats, and international standards are important merit figures of continuous improvement. In this book, we present important proposals that will certainly contribute to the evolution of RFID. Theoretical and practical aspects are presented and discussed by the authors, and thus we invite everyone for a pleasant reading.

Abstract

This book presents a collection of chapters from different areas of science and engineering, where Petri Nets have been shown to be a useful tool for the design and modeling of the problems that arise in such fields. The areas covered in this book include manufacturing systems, authentication and cyber-security, computer architectures, mechanical systems, process mining, control theory and time analysis. The main focus of the chapters was to be illustrative, to help the development of intuitive ideas that may guide the reader to adopt Petri Nets in their scientific or engineering work. However, there are other chapters with deep mathematical basis such as time analysis. Whenever possible, models, graphics and examples illustrate the developed concepts.

Abstract

This edited book aims to present the state of the art in research and development of the convergence of high-performance computing and parallel programming for various engineering and scientific applications. The book has consolidated algorithms, techniques, and methodologies to bridge the gap between the theoretical foundations of academia and implementation for research, which might be used in business and other real-time applications in the future. The book outlines techniques and tools used for emergent areas and domains, which include acceleration of large-scale electronic structure simulations with heterogeneous parallel computing, characterizing power and energy efficiency of a data-centric high-performance computing runtime and applications, security applications of GPUs, parallel implementation of multiprocessors on MPI using FDTD, particle-based fused rendering, design and implementation of particle systems for mesh-free methods with high performance, and evolving topics on heterogeneous computing. In the coming days the need to converge HPC, IoT, cloud-based applications will be felt and this volume tries to bridge that gap.

Abstract

In a modern technological society, electronic engineering and design innovations are both academic and practical engineering fields that involve systematic technological materialization through scientific principles and engineering designs. Engineers and designers must work together with a variety of other professionals in their quest to find systems solutions to complex problems. Rapid advances in science and technology have broadened the horizons of engineering while simultaneously creating a multitude of challenging problems in every aspect of modern life. Current research is interdisciplinary in nature, reflecting a combination of concepts and methods that often span several areas of mechanics, mathematics, electrical engineering, control engineering, and other scientific disciplines. In addition, the 2nd IEEE International Conference on Knowledge Innovation and Invention 2019 (IEEE ICKII 2019) was held in Seoul, South Korea, on 12–15 July, 2019. This book, “Intelligent Electronic Devices”, includes 13 excellent papers form 260 papers presented in this conference about intelligent electronic devices. The main goals of this book were to encourage scientists to publish their experimental and theoretical results in as much detail as possible and to provide new scientific knowledge relevant to the topics of electronics.
