After years of indiscriminate exploitation, the Anthropocene period is giving us back a nature whose reactions make the Earth less and less habitable: reversing the route has now become a urgent priority. The paradigm of ecosystem services is moving a step in the right direction in considering the multiplicity of benefits offered to mankind by the environment, but lends itself to quantitative drifts that risk extending commodification to the world of nature. This book investigates the consistency and usefulness for the sciences of the territory of the paradigm of ecosystem services from multiple disciplinary horizons, advancing the proposal to bring it back within a bioregional approach, with the introduction of the concept of eco-territorial services.

“L’agricoltura è la prima delle arti” was born from a project, from the conscious modification of a context, using knowledge which had been shared and accumulated over time. Contemporary agriculture, the daughter of the 'green revolution', of Fordism and its crisis, turned its back on the knowledge that agriculture was able to produce not only food, but also environmental protection and aesthetic quality. The texts collected in this volume are intended to encourage reflections and practices in the various areas of territory and landscape planning and design - on the university, political, technical, professional and administrative levels - which can lead the world of agriculture to regain a central role in outlining new relationships between inhabitants and territory. In these texts, the agricultural landscape represents an opportunity to produce a context where it is pleasant to live, with an approach far from the aesthetical drift of a 'picturesque’ and imaginary misunderstanding; an approach which is however careful towards a contextual aesthetic, arising within and from the rural world.

Although still in a provisional form, as befits a field of study still undergoing consolidation, the text tries to summarize the results that emerged from the contributions collected in the volume and from their comparison; outlining, even before real conclusions, a series of clues, cues and problematic issues with which scientific reflection will have to face in the near future. Therefore, they are to be read as many beginnings of research paths, to be followed towards a plausible way of including ecosystem services in the bioregional planning of the territory.

Can today’s landscape become a living construct again, moved and shaped by a plurality of actors working for its maintenance with shared modalities? This text investigates the landscape’s role and its structural features in the governance of the territory, starting from Tuscany’s experience with landscape planning: this polyphonic, rich and multifaceted reflection is aimed at promoting the birth of communication tools and agreements, which not only strengthen the decision-making system from the bottom (in order to overcome the acknowledged detachment between plans, policies and common sentiment), but also open the way to the renewal of the consolidated structures of representative democracy.
