Abstract

This open access book sets out to explain the reasons for the gap between “knowing” and “doing” in view of self-reliance, which is more and more often expected of citizens. In today’s society, people are expected to take responsibility for their own lives and be self-reliant. This is no easy feat. They must be on constant high alert in areas of life such as health, work and personal finances and, if things threaten to go awry, take appropriate action without further ado. What does this mean for public policy? Policymakers tend to assume that the government only needs to provide people with clear information and that, once properly informed, they will automatically do the right thing. However, it is becoming increasingly obvious that things do not work like that. Even though people know perfectly well what they ought to do, they often behave differently. Why is this? This book sets out to explain the reasons for the gap between ‘knowing’ and ‘doing’. It focuses on the role of non-cognitive capacities, such as setting goals, taking action, persevering and coping with setbacks, and shows how these capacities are undermined by adverse circumstances. By taking the latest psychological insights fully into account, this book presents a more realist perspective on self-reliance, and shows government officials how to design rules and institutions that allow for the natural limitations in people’s ‘capacity to act’.

Abstract

Creativity - once the core demand of (artistic) social critique - today seems to be no more than an omnipresent social imperative. Their emancipatory potential became playful in favor of strategic exploitation by politics and economy, so the general reproach. Against this background, the volume addresses the multifaceted relationship between creativity and criticism. To this end, he brings together contributions from various research disciplines, artistic and activist practices along the central questions: How can the concept of creativity be criticized and (how) can its original critical potential be reactivated?

Abstract

The present study examines the diverse forms of music-making in Austria between 1918 and 193 within the context of work and non-work. In a period where practices of work (i.e. professional work) were renegotiated, these forms of music-making and how they were valued constituted a contested field. By analysing life writings of music-makers, the relevant contemporary differentiations are made clear.

Abstract

What does it mean to work in the retail sector today? In Switzerland, two giants share almost the whole market. In order to stay competitive, they intensify the work, demand more availability from their employees and deskill certain positions. How do the store managers achieve profitability objectives despite the constraints in this context? How do the cashiers cope with the increasing automation of their jobs? How do the shelf workers reconcile customer contact with ever-increasing time constraints? This book explains how neoliberal working time patterns are taking place in the supermarkets and questions the evolution of the working day in our society. The study is based on 78 interviews with managers, shop floor workers and union officers. Nicola Cianferoni is a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Geneva and the University of Neuchâtel in Switzerland.

Abstract

The IG Metall has put the topic of working time on the agenda: for more self-determination for the employees. In this book, actors present the course and outcome of the 2018 collective bargaining round in the metalworking and electronics industries and take a look at key elements of trade union action. Justice, autonomy, solidarity and power are at the center. They see the collective bargaining round as a practical prelude to a future debate on the role of trade unions, participation and participation in a society in transition.

Abstract

Religion, Welfare, and Social Service Provision: Common Ground delves deeply into the partnerships forged between religious communities, government agencies and nonprofits to deliver social services to the needy. These pages offer a considered examination of how local faith entities have served those in their midst, and how the provision of those services has been impacted by evolving social policies. This foundational volume brings together the work of more than two dozen leading researchers, each providing long overdue scholarly inquiry into religiously affiliated helping and the many possibilities that it holds for effective cooperation.

Abstract

How do young women experience violence in their first own relationships? What role do experiences of violence play in the family of origin and how do they shape one's own relationship conceptions? In the European context, the research discourse on violence in adolescent relationships is scarcely developed. Above all, however, the subject perspective is missing: the experiences that young and young women make in their first love relationships. Eva Maria Lohner makes clear the societal relevance of this perspective and shows that significant background points for socio-educational support and accompaniment can be deduced against her background.
