Abstract

Computer assisted surgery systems intraoperatively support the surgeon by providing information on the location of hidden risk and target structures during surgery. However, soft tissue deformations make intraoperative registration (and thus intraoperative navigation) difficult. In this work, a novel, biomechanics based approach for real-time soft tissue registration from sparse intraoperative sensor data such as stereo endoscopic images is presented to overcome this problem.

Abstract

The 2017 International Conference on Micro/Nanomachines (http://www.icmnm.org/) was held in Wuhan, China, 25–28 August, 2017. Micro/nanomotors (MNMs), which are defined as micro/nanodevices capable of converting energy into autonomous motion, can be used to pick up, transport, and release various cargoes within a liquid medium. They have important potential applications, for example, in drug delivery, biosensors, protein and cell separation, microsurgeries, and environment remediation. MNMs can be classified into two categories, according to their propulsion mechanism. In this respect, self-propelled MNMs are capable of moving autonomously without external intervention, but they either require toxic fuel or have a short lifespan. MNMs actuated by external fields, such as light, magnetic field, and acoustic waves, are not subject to these problems, do not require toxic fuels, nor give rise to by-products during the motion process. For both self-propelled and field-actuated MNMs, there is still a long way to go before we reach practical applications. The future development of MNMs should be focused on improving the energy conversion efficiency through structure optimization, exploring new propulsion mechanisms and endowing MNMs with environmental responses for self-navigation, detection, and specific operations. In this way, MNMs will approach their practical application in biomedicine, environment treatment, microengineering, etc.

Abstract

Nowadays, the technological advances allow developing many applications on different fields. In this book Motion Tracking and Gesture Recognition, two important fields are shown. Motion tracking is observed by a hand-tracking system for surgical training, an approach based on detection of dangerous situation by the prediction of moving objects, an approach based on human motion detection results and preliminary environmental information to build a long-term context model to describe and predict human activities, and a review about multispeaker tracking on different modalities. On the other hand, gesture recognition is shown by a gait recognition approach using Kinect sensor, a study of different methodologies for studying gesture recognition on depth images, and a review about human action recognition and the details about a particular technique based on a sensor of visible range and with depth information.

Abstract

Le Moyen Âge apparaît, à bien des égards, comme un âge d'or des ports. Et d'abord parce qu'il fut une grande époque de navigation. La mer et le fleuve génèrent en effet des déplacements, des passages, des échanges en des sites soigneusement choisis et construits par l'homme. Ce sont ces sites maritimes et fluviaux, désignés par des termes issus du vieux nordique hofn ou du latin portus, qui font l'objet des études rassemblées ici. Répondant à l'invitation de la jeune université de La Rochelle, la Société des historiens médiévistes de l'Enseignement supérieur public y a tenu son XXXVe congrès en juin 2004. Comme il se devait dans un port atlantique et un lieu hautement symbolique, le thème retenu, Ports maritimes et ports fluviaux au Moyen Âge, touchait aux déplacements par voie d'eau. Les actes de la rencontre traitent donc de la navigation, mais aussi de toutes les activités qui lui étaient liées et des hommes qui s'y consacraient ou qui en dépendaient. Des rives de l'Atlantique à celle de la mer Noire et de la Baltique, en passant par la Méditerranée, et sans oublier les grands fleuves, les études que l'on va lire tirent parti des progrès de l'archéologie et d'une attention critique aux sources écrites pour reconstituer la topographie des sites portuaires, la variété des activités et des métiers liés aux fonctions des ports, les configurations des réseaux d'échanges construits ou non, ainsi que les mécanismes de prélèvement fiscaux et de contrôle des activités de ces lieux singuliers. Elles mettent ainsi en lumière les systèmes portuaires reliant les fleuves aux bassins maritimes, ainsi que les changements intervenus au cours des dix siècles médiévaux, en particulier de part et d'autre de la césure du xiiie siècle.

Abstract

Image processing in agriculture and forestry represents a challenge towards the automation of tasks for better performances. Agronomists, computer and robotics engineers, and agricultural machinery industry manufacturers now have at their disposal a book containing a collection of methods, procedures, designs, and descriptions at the technological forefront, which serves as an important support and aid for the implementation and development of their own ideas.The book describes: (1) Applications (canopy on trees, aboveground biomass, phenotyping, chlorophyll, leaf area index, water and nutrient content, land cover change, soil properties, and secure autonomous navigation); (2) Imaging devices onboard robots, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and satellites operating at different spectral ranges (visible, infrared, hyper-multispectral bands, and radar), as well as guidelines for selecting machine vision systems in outdoor environments; and (3) (Specific computer vision methods (generic and convolutional neural networks, machine learning, specific segmentation approaches, vegetation indices, and three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction).

Abstract

La construction sur l’Euphrate des barrages turcs et syriens a entraîné la disparition d’un tiers des sites hellénistiques, romains et byzantins de la vallée ; elle a modifié le rôle que le Moyen-Euphrate jouait depuis des millénaires comme axe principal de circulation et d’échanges entre la Méditerranée et la Mésopotamie. Cet essai de géographie historique se propose de poursuivre la synthèse que René Dussaud avait consacrée aux rives de l’Euphrate dans la Topographie historique de la Syrie antique et médiévale, publiée en 1927. En croisant différentes sources textuelles et documentaires, des écrits des géographes antiques aux images satellitaires, cette étude, accompagnée de nombreuses illustrations, met en valeur les dynamiques géographiques et historiques qui ont marqué l’occupation de la vallée depuis la fin du IVe s. av. J.-C. jusqu’au VIIe s. (volume 1). Complément indispensable de l’étude d’ensemble, le catalogue (volume 2) présente 212 notices, accompagnées d’une très riche documentation graphique et photographique sur les sites archéologiques de la vallée : centres urbains, villages, forteresses, églises, monastères, nécropoles du Moyen-Euphrate durant les périodes hellénistique, romaine et byzantine. Il permet de parcourir les deux rives du fleuve, de Zeugma à Doura-Europos : ainsi se trouve rassemblée la somme des données archéologiques représentatives des profondes mutations intervenues entre la colonisation séleucide et le siècle de Justinien.

Abstract

The new concept for mobile environmental education extends the traditional media-based environmental interpretation by means of a mobile context-aware computer. This mobile nature guide system can assist its user during self-determined exploration by adapting its presentation to the usage situation, preferences and current environmental conditions. The impact of the prototype mobile nature guide on environmental literacy and user satisfaction has been compared to traditional media in the field.

Abstract

Electronic engineering and design innovation are both academic and practical engineering fields that involve systematic technological materialization through scientific principles and engineering designs. Technological innovation via electronic engineering includes electrical circuits and devices, computer science and engineering, communications and information processing, and electrical engineering communications. The Special Issue selected excellent papers presented at the International Conference on Knowledge Innovation and Invention 2018 (IEEE ICKII 2018) on the topic of electronics and their applications. This conference was held on Jeju Island, South Korea, 23–27 July 2018, and it provided a unified communication platform for researchers from all over the world. The main goal of this Special Issue titled “Selected papers from IEEE ICKII 2018” is to discover new scientific knowledge relevant to the topic of electronics and their applications.
