Abstract

Vaccines is a well-written book on the subject of providing crucial information to students and researchers in the field of vaccinology. The introductory chapter, contributed by the editor (Dr. Vijay Kumar) of the book, provides the brief introduction to the history of the development of current forms of vaccine, which is difficult to find easily in one place. In addition, other chapters of the book are written by experts in the field. For example, the second chapter looks at the emerging role of developing countries in the innovation and production of vaccines. Other chapters provide information regarding different types of vaccines, development of vaccines for zoonotic viral infections, and regulatory affairs for genetically modified organism vaccines.

Abstract

The book Immunopathogenesis and Immune-Based Therapy for Selected Autoimmune Disorders is a synthesis work that discusses two main aspects of autoimmunity: Immunopathogenesis and therapeutic approaches essentially based on the immunotherapies. This book deals with different topics on a number of autoimmune disorders, including type 1 diabetes, autoimmune cardiomyopathy, autoimmunity of gastrointestinal tract, systemic sclerosis, and myasthenia gravis. This book will be useful to clinicians, biologists, researchers, teachers, and students who are interested in immunology and immunopathology.

Abstract

This book intends to provide the reader with a comprehensive overview about the state of the art regarding the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in physical and rehabilitation medicine and the study of the pharmacodynamics of existing and newly introduced NSAIDs in the management of pain and inflammation. It will also elaborate and refine already known knowledge on the mechanism(s) of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents. This book may provide additional knowledge about the design and development of new drug delivery systems loaded with NSAIDs potentially useful in the treatment of chronic inflammatory-based diseases following circadian cycle, uses of NSAIDs as a source of medicinal plants, and the adverse effects and drug interactions of the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

Abstract

Microbes that elude host's defenses and have developed resistance to the existing antibiotic arsenal continuously invade the human body. Cure for such diseases is inevitable as it may result in high morbidity and mortality, if not properly treated. Vaccination represents the most cost-effective way for disease prevention. Vaccines activate sentinels of the immune system including macrophages and T, B, and dendritic cells to release a battery of effector molecules and cytokines and ward off infection. For long-lasting protection, the memory cells also need to be evoked. This book encompasses biotechnological vaccines in clinical use, cocooning, disease resurgence postvaccination and other vaccine adverse effects, prospects of therapeutic versus prophylactic vaccines, and design of effective vaccines using bioinformatic tools and engineering molecular pattern interactions.

Abstract

Systemic sclerosis is a rare autoimmune disease characterized by immunological alterations, small vessel vasculopathy, and skin and other organ fibrosis. Despite progress in the knowledge of pathogenic steps and therapeutic options, when compared with other rheumatic conditions, it shows the lowest life expectancy rate. Early diagnosis is important as early treatment could lead to better outcomes. Great progress has been made in the treatment of specific symptoms; however, there are still no disease-modifying drugs that are able to control the overall disease activity satisfactorily. This book covers the latest knowledge in systemic sclerosis from pathophysiology to clinical presentation and management. Hopefully, this book will be a useful resource to students, residents, rheumatologists, dermatologist, and anyone interested in this fascinating disease.

Abstract

Allergy is a main problem of public health in the world. Many people in all countries are suffering from this problem. Some diseases (i.e. allergic rhinitis, allergic asthma, food allergy, urticaria, eczema, etc.) have allergic reaction pathophysiology, and with control of allergic mechanisms, these diseases can be controlled and cured. The current book entitled Allergen has focused on allergy, mechanism, diagnosis, treatment, and other related problems. Chapters of the book have good data on allergy-based medical sciences and would be a benefit for all researchers in immunology, allergy, and asthma fields. Current discussions would be useful for prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of atopic patients. We hope these chapters could be a new approach in immunotherapy of allergic diseases and help in the progress of healthy system.

Abstract

""Vasculitis"" describes an inflammatory process that involves the blood vessels and contributes to vascular damage. Autoimmunity, infections, drugs, and malignancies have been considered among potential etio-pathogenic factors. In vasculitis, the inflammation might develop in either a systemic or an organ-specific form and might exist as an independent pathology ""primary vasculitis"" or as a presentation of an existing primary pathology, that is, ""secondary vasculitis"". This book Vasculitis In Practice-An Update on Special Situations - Clinical and Therapeutic Considerations unlike many publications in the field, uses a different evidence-based approach to organ-specific vascular inflammatory diseases. The authors highlighted the unmet needs from the 1994 Chapel Hill Consensus Conference introducing the latest clinically relevant definitions for the different forms of vasculitis revised in 2012. The identification, classification, and management of kidney disease with different types of vasculitis with an evidence-based update on proposed therapeutic strategies are presented in this publication.

Abstract

This book highlights the numerous important properties of neutrophils and their role in various diseases, and as a possible therapeutic target as well. The first chapter briefly discusses the main effector neutrophil functions, which is followed by two chapters discussing the importance of different neutrophil receptors (cannabinoid and Fc?R) and their role in various disease conditions. The fourth chapter discusses the differential expression profile of CD16+CD11b+ on the surface of neutrophils as a tool for the diagnosis of acute infections. The last chapter discusses the physics of the NADPH oxidase system and the use of different chemiluminigenic probes for the detection of various reactive oxygen intermediates of the circulating neutrophils.

Abstract

Epithelial tissue does not spring to mind as an obvious source of autoimmune phenomena. Yet, genetic predisposition and influence of various environmental and epigenetic factors may lead to epithelium becoming a springboard for the development of autoimmune diseases, such as Sjögren’s syndrome, primary biliary cholangitis, autoimmune pancreatitis, or IgG4-related diseases. This book is intended as an introduction to the problem of “autoimmune epithelitis” and diseases closely related to the immune disturbances of the epithelium, with special emphasis on those affecting exocrine glands. Both theoretical and practical knowledge, presented by authors from a wide range of medical specialties, should be of help for medical professionals who have to deal with this difficult problem in their daily practice.
