Abstract

This collection brings together scholars from a wide range of disciplines to offer perspectives on national identity formation in various European contexts between 1600 and 1815. Contributors challenge the dichotomy between modernists and traditionalists in nationalism studies through an emphasis on continuity rather than ruptures in the shaping of European nations in the period, while also offering an overview of current debates in the field and case studies on a number of topics, including literature, historiography, and cartography.

Abstract

We entrust readers with thirty fragments of reflections, meditations, recollections, and images — one for each year that has passed since the explosion that rocked and destroyed a part of the Chernobyl nuclear power station in April 1986. The aesthetic visions, thoughts, and experiences that have made their way into this book hover in a grey region between the singular and self-enclosed, on the one hand, and the generally applicable and universal, on the other. Through words and images, we wish to contribute our humble share to a collaborative grappling with the event of Chernobyl. Unthinkable and unrepresentable as it is, we insist on the need to reflect upon, signify, and symbolize it, taking stock of the consciousness it fragmented and, perhaps, cultivating another, more environmentally attuned way of living.

Abstract

In today’s society we increasingly create and consume written content and images. This includes a range of sources, from social media posts to records held within organisations, and everything in between, including news articles, blogs, shopping lists and official government documents. Critically reading these ‘documents’ can help us to understand a huge amount about society. Doing Excellent Social Research with Documents includes guidance on how to ‘read between the lines’, and provides an overview of six research projects which use documents as data.

Abstract

Abstract

Printed images were, on one hand, material objects produced, owned or variously transformed by humans, but on the other hand, they were immaterial representations, conceived and variously received by humans as well. Certainly, such a complex relationship among things, people and images is not an exclusive feature of the premodern periods print cultures. However, the rise of printmaking challenged some established rules in the arts and visual realms. Three short insights may exemplify this rise of printmaking. The first insight s point of departure comprises material objects related to Lucas Cranach the Elders early Crucifixion; the second insight offers a human perspective, starting with Christophe Plantins working practices; and the third insight is a short story that emphasises the ambiguities surrounding what printed images represent, as epitomised by early modern depictions of wisent, a species related to the North American bison, but often confused with the Eastern European aurochs.

Abstract

Abstract

This volume captures the status of digital humanities within the Arts in South Africa. The primary research methodology falls within the broader tradition of phenomenological hermeneutics, with a specific emphasis on visual hermeneutics. Some of the tools utilised as part of the visual hermeneutic methods are geographic information system (GIS) mapping, sensory ethnography and narrative pathways. Digital humanities is positioned here as the necessary engagement of the humanities with the pervasive digital culture of the 21st century. It is posited that the humanities and arts, in particular, have an essential role to play in unlocking meaning from scientific, technological and data-driven research. The critical engagement with digital humanities is foregrounded throughout the volume, as this crucial engagement works through images. Images (as understood within image studies) are not merely another form of text but always more than text. As such, this book is the first of its kind in the South African scholarly landscape, and notably also a first on the African continent. Its targeted audience include both scholars within the humanities, particularly in the arts and social sciences. Researchers pursuing the new field of digital humanities may also find the ideas presented in this book significant. Several of the chapters analyse the question of dealing with digital humanities through representations of the self as viewed from the Global South. However, it should be noted that self-representation is not the only area covered in this volume. The latter chapters of the book discuss innovative ways of implementing digital humanities strategies and methodologies for teaching and researching in South Africa.

Abstract

Abstract

"What events, places and figures linger in the memory of eighteen prominent Belgians when they think of their country? French-speaking and Dutch-speaking academics sought an answer to this question for several years. They organized meetings with Belgian duos from various social domains: the journalists Nina Verhaeghe and Christian Laporte, politicians Herman Van Rompuy and Philippe Moureaux, poets Dirk Van Bastelaere and Laurence Vielle, directors Jan Verheyen and Adil El Arbi, writers Kristien Hemmerechts and Vincent Engel, athletes Laurence Rase and Jean-Michel Saive, the businessmen Yves Noël & Christ'l Joris, the syndicalists Caroline Copers and Felipe Van Keirsbilck, and the imam and Islam teacher Brahim Laytouss and theologian Myriam Tonus.

Abstract

This volume collects the revised contributions of a conference that took place in March 2002 at the Warburg-Haus in Hamburg. It was organised as part of the "Nature in Conflict" research project, which was funded by the Volkswagen Foundation within the framework of the "Key Humanities Issues" funding programme. This interdisciplinary project was dedicated to the investigation of mental concepts, images, models and value attributions that belong to the collective fund of our ideas of nature. In this context, the investigations are directed from the perspective of various disciplines - ethnology or social anthropology, history, coastal research in the natural sciences, literature, linguistics and media studies - in particular at those images of nature and models that belong to the argumentations and convictions that are often not discussed.
