Abstract

The current book consists of eighteen chapters divided into three sections. Section I includes nine topics in characterization techniques and evaluation of advanced ceramics dealing with newly developed photothermal, ultrasonic and ion spattering techniques, the neutron irradiation and the properties of ceramics, the existence of a polytypic multi-structured boron carbide, the oxygen isotope exchange between gases and nanoscale oxides and the evaluation of perovskite structures ceramics for sensors and ultrasonic applications. Section II includes six topics in raw materials, processes and mechanical and other properties of conventional and advanced ceramic materials, dealing with the evaluation of local raw materials and various types and forms of wastes for ceramics production, the effect of production parameters on ceramic properties, the evaluation of dental ceramics through application parameters and the reinforcement of ceramics by fibers. Section III, includes three topics in degradation, aging and healing of ceramic materials, dealing with the effect of granite waste addition on artificial and natural degradation bricks, the effect of aging, micro-voids, and self-healing on mechanical properties of glass ceramics and the crack-healing ability of structural ceramics.

Abstract

The "Pannonische Glanztonware" (PGW) is a type of ceramics, which was wide-spread in Pannonia from the end of the 1st well into the 3rd century A.D. It is a product of local potteries, in which the influence of ceramics in the La Tène tradition and of imported Roman ceramics joined to create a new, typical Pannonian ware. In the PGW was produced exclusively table ware. The shapes of the vessels are to a large extent taken over from the Terra Sigillata resp. influenced by it; some of them also show the influence of the raetic-germanic area and the local utility ware. The vessels have a fine paste, a slip and are fired at the beginning of production, in most cases in a reducing atmosphere. But from the beginning oxidized fired pieces also appeared; their portion is - regionally scattered - increasing in the 3rd century. A number of the vessels are decorated in a for typical PGW way with stamps either inside at the base or outside; most of them, however are undecorated. The basis of the investigations into the PGW are the finds, which were unearthened at the excavations 1977-1988 conducted by H. Stiglitz in the auxiliary fort of Carnuntum. The finds of the "Steinkastell I" and the over it lying levelling layer give a representative view of the PGW in the second third of the 2nd century in the area of Carnuntum. On the basis of the finds published here, a open classification-system was created, so that it can be expanded with further finds, which are until now only known from unpublished locations or from other publications. Regarding the material of the vessels five fabrics ("STyp 1-5") and four types of slip ("ÜTyp A-D") could be distinguished. Petrographic and heavy mineral analysis, which were carried out by R. Sauer, showed that the vessels of fabric 2, 3 and 5 were probably produced in the area of Carnuntum. Apart from the emphasis on north-western Pannonia, which results from the basis of the finds of Carnuntum, a summary is given of the spectrum of the PGW, the potter's stamps, workshops and finds from dated locations in eastern and south-western Pannonia. A short discourse on the stamped ceramics found in south-eastern Pannonia, Moesia and Dacia completes the picture.

Abstract

Ce quatrième ouvrage de la série « Conquête de la steppe » présente de nouvelles études d’archéologie, de géoarchéologie et d’anthropologie issues d’un important programme de prospection de la zone steppique de la Syrie centrale à l’est de Hama, qui s’est déroulé de 1995 à 2010. Les périodes dont il est question ici vont du PPNB à l’époque contemporaine (VIIIe millénaire av. J.-C.-xxie s. ap. J.-C.). L’adaptation de l’homme à l’environnement est abordée du point de vue de l’acquisition et du stockage de l’eau en milieu aride, grâce aux citernes pluviales, et à travers deux études de cas : celle d’un village du PPNB et celle de deux années pluviométriques extrêmes. Une partie des articles (céramique, monnaies, monuments religieux) éclaire d’un nouveau jour la définition du territoire régional, durant l’Antiquité et par la suite. Des questions de topographie historique sont aussi abordées grâce à la publication de nouvelles inscriptions. Enfin, plusieurs contributions concernent les formes de l’habitat, aussi bien les résidences luxueuses des propriétaires terriens (des époques omeyyade et contemporaine) que les villages byzantins et les processus de sédentarisation à l’époque contemporaine.

Abstract

This open access book presents a collection of the most up-to-date research results in the field of steel development with a focus on pioneering alloy concepts that result in previously unattainable materials properties. Specifically, it gives a detailed overview of the marriage of high-performance steels of the highest strength and form-ability with damage-tolerant zirconia ceramics by innovative manufacturing technologies, thereby yielding a new class of high-performance composite materials. This book describes how new high-alloy stainless TRIP/TWIP steels (TRIP: TRansformation-Induced Plasticity, TWIP: TWinning-induced Plasticity) are combined with zirconium dioxide ceramics in powder metallurgical routes and via melt infiltration to form novel TRIP-matrix composites. Abstract

The volume contains 93 objects originating from workshops of the East Greek Area, the island of Cyprus, the Greek homeland and the Western Mediterranean like South Italy or Etruria.The pieces are shown to a large extent for the first time. Among the geometric pottery a fragment of a monumental crater of the Dipylon workshop is particularly noteworthy, among the Corinthian pottery two large alabastra of the Luxus-group emerge, but the Attic red-figure style is represented as the most prominent by a hydria of the Berlin painter.

Commentary on these initial connections often emphasizes the importance of graffiti and fashion during hip-hop’s earliest days. Forty years later, hip-hop music has grown into a billion-dollar global industry, and its influence on visual art and society has also expanded. This book-length printed edition of Arts collects essays by scholars who explore this evolving influence through their work in art education, cultural theory, and visual culture studies. Abstract

This Special Issue of Crystals contains papers focusing on various properties of conducting ceramics. Multiple aspects of both the research and application of this group of materials have been addressed. Conducting ceramics are the wide group of mostly oxide materials which play crucial roles in various technical applications, especially in the context of the harvesting and storage of energy. Without ion-conducting oxides, such as yttria-stabilized zirconia, doped ceria devices such as solid oxide fuel cells would not exist, not to mention the wide group of other ion conductors which can be applied in batteries or even electrolyzers, besides fuel cells. The works published in this Special Issue tackle experimental results as well as general theoretical trends in the field of ceramic conductors, or electroceramics, as it is often referred to.
