Abstract

Abstract

In 1985, the French philosopher Jean-François Lyotard curated a groundbreaking exhibition called Les Immatériaux at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. The exhibition showed how telecommunication technologies were beginning to impact every aspect of life. At the same time, it was a material demonstration of what Lyotard called the post-modern condition. This book features a previously unpublished report by Jean-François Lyotard on the conception of Les Immatériaux and its relation to postmodernity. Reviewing the historical significance of the exhibition, his text is accompanied by twelve contemporary meditations. The philosophers, art historians, and artists analyse this important moment in the history of media and theory, and reflect on the new material conditions brought about by digital technologies in the last 30 years.

Abstract

This collective volume aims to highlight the philosophical and literary idea of “apocalypse,” within some key examples in the “Slavic world” during the nineteenth and twentieth century. From Russian realism to avant-garde painting, from the classic fiction of the nineteenth century to twentieth century philosophy, not omitting theatre, cinema or music, there is a specific examination of the concepts of “end of history” and “end of present time” as conditions for a redemptive image of the world. To understand this idea means to understand an essential part of Slavic culture, which; however divergent and variegated it may be in general, converges on a specific myth in a surprising manner.

Abstract

The image, before representing, to signify, acts and makes act. The performance of images, which this book undertakes exploration, is to be understood first of all as the evaluation of their effectiveness: what are the effects of images? It is then their agency: in what way are images living beings? It is also their performativity: as there are acts of speech, there are acts of image whose modalities can be detailed. Finally, it is their power: what can an image, including a text, for example, be incapable?

Christian image holds a special place here because, far from being a simple "Bible of illiterate "subject to the reign of the text, it permeates all aspects of the life and thought of Christian societies, from their theological and anthropological foundations - God created man in his image; the Son is the image of the Father - up to the most diverse uses of visual objects. But in the West it is not only in the Middle Ages that the images are active: this book is also devoted to the new forms of visual performances that appeared with the Renaissance or the mass-media society.

Abstract

"Open access to this title is possible thanks to the generous support of Arcadia, a charitable fund of Lisbet Rausing and Peter Baldwin.Renaissance Futurities considers the intersections between artistic rebirth, the new science, and European imperialism in the global early modern world. Charlene Villaseñor Black and Mari-Tere Álvarez reconsider the work of Renaissance genius Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519), prolific artist and inventor, and other polymaths such as philosopher Giulio “Delminio” Camillo (1480–1544), physician and naturalist Francisco Hernández de Toledo (1514–1587), and writer Miguel de Cervantes (1547–1616). This concern with futurity is inspired by the Renaissance itself, a period defined by visions of the future, as well as by recent theorizing of temporality in Renaissance, queer, and ethnic studies. This transdisciplinary collection is at the cutting edge of the humanities, the sciences, and the arts with contributions in history, art history, literature, media studies, mathematics, and medicine.“A superb provocation, asking us to reimagine the Renaissance in both space and time, resituating it at the crossroads of Europe and its early modern empires; of art, technology, and science; and of alternative pasts and futures.” TARA NUMMEDAL, author of Anna Zieglerin and the Lion’s Blood: Alchemy and End Times in Reformation Germany“This volume approaches the field through the unique lens of futurity, bringing together an eclectic transdisciplinary group of scholars who focus on ingenuity and futuristic thinking in various Renaissance contexts.” PAULA DeVOS, Professor of History, San Diego State UniversityCHARLENE VILLASEÑOR BLACK is Professor of Art History and Chicana/o Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles. Abstract

In 2014, New York-based artist Lois Conner gifted one of pioneering Chinese artist Zhang Peili’s last paintings to The Australian National University’s newly opened Australian Centre on China in the World. Never exhibited and thought lost, the reemergence of Flying Machine (1994) prompts an exploration of the relation between painting and video in the oeuvre of Zhang Peili. Given Zhang’s significance as a leading conceptual painter in the 1980s, then as a media art pioneer and educator in the 1990s and 2000s, Zhang Peili: From Painting to Video is also a nuanced study of broader developments in Chinese contemporary art’s history. Featuring contributions by historian Geremie R. Barmé, photographer Lois Conner, art historians John Clark, Katie Grube, and Olivier Krischer, and curator Kim Machan, these essays together challenge the narrative of Zhang as ‘the father of Chinese video art’, highlighting instead the conceptual consistency, rigour, and formal experimentation in his work, which transcends a specific medium. By equal measure, the book embraces longstanding connections as integral to its meaning, connections between artists, curators and researchers, collaborators, colleagues and friends through China and Australia.

Abstract

Characteristic for all contributions to the Wiener Jahrbuch in 2010 is the presentation of latest research findings with the help of methodological refinements. Thus Assaf Pinkus suggests a new interdisciplinary approach for trecento painting, which brings the viewer's perceptions into an analysis of image creation. Milena Bartlová, on the other hand, addresses the little considered subject of the iconoclasm of Bohemian Hussites. An important finding is that Hussitism was unable to give up the image in its medieval function, since the printed book - which could have taken over the communicative qualities of the image - had not yet been invented. Giovan Battista Fidanza also deals with a little considered subject - namely Michelangelo as wood carver. He is able to demonstrate convincingly that Michelangelo applied prefabricated blocks of limewood in the assemblage of his wooden crucifixes. The four subsequent articles are dedicated to Baroque art. Eckhart Leuschner defines the Baroque allegory as a constant and internationally standardised deployment of formal and semantic possibilities. At the centre of Kristoffer Neville's contribution is an early version of Fischer von Erlach's Entwurff einer historischen Architectur, with the help of which the creative process of Fischer's main architectural-theoretical work is reconstructed. In the complicated memoria programme of the state sarcophagus finished for Franz Stephan and Maria Theresia in 1754 in the crypt of the Vienna Capuchin Church, Werner Telesko identifies both Antique and Christian strands of tradition. Werner Hofmann, meanwhile, recognises the 1711 endowment decree for Lothar Franz von Schönborn as an inofficial foundation source for Schloss Pommersfelden and traces a 'hypertext' within the decree, which represents the key for the building's iconography. The amateur drawings of the Habsburgs from the 19th century are comprehended by Kerstin Merkel as autonomous non-verbal sources and integrated with historical information. Iris Wien, by contrast, sets two self-portraits of Andy Wahrhol within his known oeuvre and convincingly suggests an interpretation as Medusa. In the last four contributions to the volume, the Memorabilia, important contemporary historical documents for the history of the Vienna School are published and made accessible. Alexandra Caruso edits the memoirs of Erica Tietze Conrat. The letters of Wilde, presented by Károly Kókai, provide insights into events within the circles of Vienna art history at that time. Evonne Levy publishes for the first time a selection of letters written by Hans Sedlmayr to Meyer Schapiro in the period 1930-35. Charles Hope succeeds in portraying in convincing complexity the scholarly range of Sir Ernst Gombrich.
