Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The book proposes a radical transformation of existing church and training models in South African Reformed ecclesial circles. It takes the theological discussion, especially in ecclesiology, to the next level and argues for new ways to express belief in ecclesial practice. The book provides a provocative strategic vision which takes the ecclesial challenges of the twenty-first century seriously. The book will benefit not only theologians in the academy but also church leaders. Firstly, a situational analysis which focuses on the circumstances and social standing of mainstream churches in the twenty-first century, is done. Current difficulties and obstacles are identified. These can be contributed mainly to the secularisation and post-Christian tendencies of the era subsequent to the two world wars. Secondly, the responsible renewal of and much needed amendments to the structures of South African Protestant faith communities in a postmodern, postliberal, postcolonial context are proposed. The authority of scripture and the creeds of these churches are foundational for sensible renewal. The book dialogues with the relevant existing literature as it develops its ‘missional’ approach to being church in the world today. The investigation is thorough, the argumentation sound and the book makes an original and thought-provoking contribution to the field. The contribution includes biblical perspectives on ecclesial communities, a historical overview of the growth and decline of mainstream churches, insights with regard to the available empirical data, and strategies for the future. The work attests to sound methodology and a strong theoretical foundation. Literature from various parts of the world is utilised, which provides both breadth and depth to the work. The author displays an impressive ability to integrate findings from various fields and disciplines.

Abstract

'The Future of Catholic Theological Ethics' undertakes a search for new ways of making Catholic theological ethics relevant. It engages with a ground-breaking publication 'Reframing Catholic Theological Ethics' (Oxford University Press, 2016) by Joseph Selling, Emeritus Professor of Moral Theology, Catholic University Leuven. Selling opens the volume with a summary of the approach he developed in the above work. The papers presented here cover several major themes that, traditionally, Catholic theological ethics have considered but, according to the authors of the papers, need revisiting. Amongst these themes are: conscience, virtue, natural law, authority, ecumenism, the human person and the theology of theological ethics. The writers represent a variety of approaches, geographical locations and while most of them are Roman Catholic, there is an imbedded ecumenism and interreligious and inter-cultural slant in several discussions. The authors agree that Catholic theological ethics, in order to be relevant, it needs to become more context-sensitive, ecumenical, practice-based, experience-oriented, continuously discerning, pedagogically wide-ranging and theologically articulate. It must be unceasingly willing to review and renew its method as well as revisit its key concepts. It must neither dismiss its long tradition nor stick to its single interpretation.

Abstract

Abstract

Denis Diderot’s development as a writer is characterised by his permanent endeavour to surpass his own technical achievements. This incessant search for constantly new styles of writing is not only an expression of his impressive artistic finesse, but also a constitutive element of his partially firm political objectives. This book draws attention to the political dimensions of Diderot’s virtuosity as a writer and examines in particular their productive reception in German-speaking countries.

Abstract

There is currently much discourse about generations in the public sphere. A sequence of letters conflates generations and age cohorts born in the last few decades (generation “X”, “Y” or “Z”) as well as multiple categories are used to describe today’s young people as a generation that is distinct from its predecessors. Despite the popularity of generational labels in media, politics, or even academia, the use of generation as a conceptual tool in youth studies has been controversial. This Special Issue allows readers to better understand the key issues regarding the use of generation as a theoretical concept and/or as a social category in the field of youth studies, shedding light on the controversies, trends, and cautions that go through it.
