Abstract

The purpose of this concluding chapter is two-fold. On the one hand,we want to tease out and summarize the key fi ndings of the diff erentchapters. What do these studies tell us, collectively? On the other hand,we want to extrapolate from these fi ndings and the current literature tooff er concrete stakeholder advice to politicians, journalists, and citizenswho are all confronted with the challenge of populist politics and populistmessages. For discussions of the limitations of this research and futureresearch directions, we refer the reader back to the conclusions of theindividual chapters where these are discussed in detail.

Abstract

First, the authors in this collection begin with the assumption thatpopulism can only be fully understood if the role played by communicationand the media is taken seriously. Second, the authors in this volume argue that our understandingof populism can hugely benefit from systematic comparisons of variousnational contexts, various groups of actors or organizations, anddifferent types of media.

Abstract

This chapter reflects on the paradox of Eurosceptic populists critical of theEuropean Union mobilizing ideas of European values, heritage, and civilization. We examine the role of the past and especially of a certain understandingof ‘European heritage’ in far-right-wing populist, nationalist discourse inEurope today.

Abstract

This chapter takes an interdisciplinary approach to the subject of memorializationand commemoration, protest and populism in relation to the performativeenacting and official presentation of difficult history. It analyzes the variousactors instrumentalizing the same dark heritage in different ways, by differentmeans, and for different purposes, to draw conclusions about processesof coming to terms with the past ( Vergangenheitsbewältigung ) in relation to thecontemporary context of populism and migration.

Abstract

Abstract

After President Trump’s election, BREXIT and the widespread rise of far-Right political parties, much public discussion has intensely focused on populism and authoritarianism. In the middle of the twentieth century, members of the early Frankfurt School prolifically studied and theorized fascism and anti-Semitism in Germany and the United States. In this volume, leading European and American scholars apply insights from the early Frankfurt School to present-day authoritarian populism, including the Trump phenomenon and related developments across the globe. Chapters are arranged into three sections exploring different aspects of the topic: theories, historical foundations, and manifestations via social media. Contributions examine the vital political, psychological and anthropological theories of early Frankfurt School thinkers, and how their insights could be applied now amidst the insecurities and confusions of twenty-first century life. The many theorists considered include Adorno, Fromm, Löwenthal and Marcuse, alongside analysis of Austrian Facebook pages and Trump’s tweets and operatic media drama. This book is a major contribution towards deeper understanding of populism’s resurgence in the age of digital capitalism.

Abstract

Whether we talk about human learning and unlearning, securitization, or political economy, the forces and mechanisms generating both globalization and disintegration are causally efficacious across the world. Thus, the processes that led to the victory of the ‘Leave’ campaign in the June 2016 referendum on UK European Union membership are not simply confined to the United Kingdom, or even Europe. Similarly, conflict in Ukraine and the presidency of Donald Trump hold implications for a stage much wider than EU-Russia or the United States alone. Patomäki explores the world-historical mechanisms and processes that have created the conditions for the world’s current predicaments and, arguably, involve potential for better futures. Operationally, he relies on the philosophy of dialectical critical realism and on the methods of contemporary social sciences, exploring how crises, learning and politics are interwoven through uneven wealth-accumulation and problematical growth-dynamics. Seeking to illuminate the causes of the currently prevailing tendencies towards disintegration, antagonism and – ultimately – war, he also shows how these developments are in fact embedded in deeper processes of human learning. The book embraces a Wellsian warning about the increasingly likely possibility of a military disaster, but its central objective is to further enlightenment and holoreflexivity within the current world-historical conjuncture. This work will be of interest to students and scholars of international relations, peace research, security studies and international political economy.

Abstract

In this wide-ranging and multidisciplinary volume, leading scholars, activists, journalists, and public figures deliberate about the creative and critical potential of public imagination in an era paradoxically marked by intensifying globalization and resurgent nationalism. Divided into five sections, these essays explore the social, political, and cultural role of imagination and civic engagement, offering cogent, ingenious reflections that stand in stark contrast to the often grim rhetoric of our era. Short and succinct, the essays engage with an interconnected ensemble of themes and issues while also providing insights into the specific geographical and social dynamics of each author’s national or regional context.
