Abstract

Martin Luther's Reformation has changed not only theology and church, but the world itself. In a multifaceted process, Luther's ideas and their effects have transformed church and culture, economy and society and paved the way for the modern age. The contributions in the second volume of the "Hamburger Akademievorträge" deal with these developments which are elementary for contemporary life.

Abstract

The freedom potential of modern societies, above all the justification of political authority, is today linked to a democratically constituted order. What is meant by the idea of being democratic seems, however, to be anything but clear. Is it only a question of representing the people through elections, ballots, and political parties, or does it include institutional culture, the division of powers, and the legal regime within a community? A "philosophy of the republic", as developed in this volume's contributions, shows that the current "dominance of the democratic" falls short of accounting for the independent significance to the republican self-organisation of state and society.

Abstract

Kant's reflections on animals open up a hitherto overlooked approach to his conception of human intuition and imagination. In her book, Rahel Villinger shows how Kant's aesthetics, epistemology, and theory of history must be reread against the background of the assumption of sensible cognition in non-rational animals. Kant as a frigid thinker of human reason, who sees in the forces of sensibility nothing but immorality and animal baseness: this prejudice is still widespread. However, sensibility for Kant is first and foremost an autonomous and independent faculty of cognition through intuition and imagination. In this way, Kant’s account of sensibility differs radically from that of the rationalist school philosophy of his day and also from the newly emerging philosophy of German idealism. Furthermore, Kant thought that we need the imagination of other animals to be able to critically think our own. Therefore, an imagination of animals with Kant includes both: the notion of a superhuman power of purely sensible intuition and imagination whose singularity and immediacy reflect the perfection and infinity of divine intuition; and the specific imagination of rational animals, whose descriptive activity combines image and writing, intuition and concept, and which becomes possible only through the imagination of their prehistorical origin - their animal prototype. Kant’s reflections on animals thus reveal a hidden ambiguity in his thinking of sensible nature, which lives on in the foundations of modern aesthetics, poetics, and image theory.

Abstract

Philosophers and rappers jointly explore in discussions, texts, songs, comments and spontaneous associations what philosophy of hip-hop means, the focus being on living philosophyzing. Philosophyzing in the sense of hip-hop requires getting personally involved. What is dreaded is not amateurism but copying the thoughts of others. In the confrontation with the thoughts of others, your own thoughts flash through your head. Authenticity, respectively realness and creativity: These are the ethical values of hip-hop. The philosophy of hip-hop does not mean talking philosophy but doing philosophy – namely when facing the challenges of modern life. The philosophy of hip-hop means performing what's happening.

Abstract

Abstract

The various sociologies of life do not interpret life only as the object that is socially standardized, enhanced and recognized. They always see it as a subject of its norms, its knowledge and its changes as well. Life is not one-sided; instead its entanglements are analyzed: the immanence of nature and culture; the concurrence of being active and passive; the co-constitution of affect and cognition; the identity of normativity and standardization. Following authors such as Bataille, Bergson, Canguilhem, Deleuze, Driesch, Plessner, the pragmatists or Simmel, the contributions featured in this book unfold different perspectives on the sociology of life, re-vitalizing a discourse that is instructive for sociological theory in a variety of ways.

Abstract

The grand thesis that the spirit of Protestantism is one of modern capitalism's great driving forces originated from Max Weber. According to him, religious foundations of inner world asceticism, Luther's concept of vocation, Calvinism, and English Puritanism had a direct influence on the development of modern kinds of economy. The thesis was not undisputed and to this day remains a prominent starting point for discussions. What can be said now in the twenty-first century about the spirit of capitalism? Do ethics still hold any sway over global financial markets and systems of production? This volume's four authors seek answers to these and other related questions from different perspectives.
