The anthology offers an examination of the structures, functions and operations of the German Association for University Continuing and Distance Education (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Wissenschaftliche Weiterbildung und Fernstudium e.V. - DGWF). The papers analyse the history of this expert association as well as the thematic priorities of the twelve sections (four work groups and eight national groups). The volume is complemented by an overview of cross-border activities and influential articles on the current status of scientific further education at universities, which is actually a relatively young academic discipline.

"The state supports lifelong learning and, in doing so, not only promotes economic objectives but, above all, also objectives in terms of social law. Both Germany and Sweden promote further education programmes by means of cash benefits and benefits in kind.The promoted further education programmes in this context are largely provided by third parties, much like many other social services. For this purpose, an actual framework and certain legal structures are essential, and these are often competitive structures, given the fact that the system of further education has evolved historically. It is not necessarily so that the objective of the educational measure supported by a specific benefit is attained as intended. The purpose of the examination is therefore to find out how the state ensures fulfilment of the objectives of the supporting measures. In order to determine whether this is the case particularly with regard to the provision of services by third parties, the two legal systems are compared."

Die evangelische Erwachsenenbildung ist sowohl ein wichtiger Akteur in der allgemeinen Fort- und Weiterbildung als auch ein zentraler Bereich kirchlichen Bildungshandelns. In diesem Bildungsbericht werden ihre Strukturen (Einrichtungen, Finanzierung, Personal) und Inhalte (Veranstaltungen) empirisch fundiert dargestellt. Dabei wird zum einen die Statistik der Deutschen Evangelischen Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Erwachsenenbildung (DEAE) ausgewertet, mit besonderem Fokus auf Unterschiede zwischen Ost- und Westdeutschland. Zum anderen bieten regionale Anbietererfassungen erstmals die Möglichkeit, Einrichtungen der evangelischen Erwachsenenbildung inner- und außerhalb des staatlich geförderten Weiterbildungssystems gemeinsam darzustellen und dadurch ihre große Vielfalt zu dokumentieren. Der Bildungsbericht zur evangelischen Erwachsenenbildung wird durch eine Vertiefungsstudie ergänzt, die für sieben Einrichtungen durchgeführt wurde. Auf Grundlage von Experteninterviews und Programmanalysen wird gezeigt, wie Mitarbeitende in unterschiedlichen organisatorischen Kontexten die Einrichtungsprogramme planen und welche Rolle die institutionellen Rahmenbedingungen dabei spielen.

The authors deal with empirical and theoretical questions of current vocational and business education research. For some years now, vocational and business education-oriented teaching and learning research has been providing insights into the connection between specialist knowledge and competence development and developing specific methods for diagnosing action competence in vocational domains for which training is provided in Germany's dual vocational training system. This research methodological instrument is increasingly used with regard to the target group of educational personnel, above all teachers at vocational schools, especially in the first phase of their professionalisation. This volume also focuses on studies on the acquisition of competencies in various domains, on methods of measuring competency development and on didactic design. This always touches on the basic themes of the development of vocational action competence, which form the basis of the dual system, also in the analysis of consecutive forms of training. Finally, questions about the effects of demographic change are focused on the development possibilities of vocational schools, which in the coming years will undoubtedly be increasingly perceived and dealt with by vocational and business education research.
