Abstract

With the growing interest in electrical machines in recent times, the multiphase machine field has developed into a fascinating research area. Their intrinsic features (power splitting, better fault tolerance, or lower torque ripple) make them an appealing competitor to conventional three-phase machines. Multiphase electric drives have been recently used in applications where fault tolerance and continuous operation of the drive are required. However, the difficulties in extending the three-phase conventional current regulation and control structure to multiphase systems still limit their broad applicability in industry solutions. The main objective of this book is to illustrate new advances, developments, and applications in the field of multiphase machines and drives, while exposing these advances, developments, and applications to the scientific community and industry.

Abstract

Cooperative connected and automated mobility (CCAM) has the potential to reshape the transportation ecosystem in a revolutionary way. Transportation systems will be safer, more efficient and more comfortable. Cars are going to be the third living space, as passengers will have the freedom to use their car to live, work and travel. Despite the massive effort devoted, both by academia and industry, to developing connected and automated vehicles, there are still many issues to be addressed, including not only scientific and technological, but also regulatory and political issues. This book, mostly centered on the scientific and technological aspects of CCAMs, features seven articles highlighting recent advances of the state of the art in different CCAM technologies. Two papers address vehicular platooning, a key application for day-1 automated driving, other presents a scheme to improve the resource utilization of vehicular networks, while another paper addresses critical train communications, proposing an architecture based on 5G, SDN and MPTCP to provide path diversity and end-to-end redundancy. One paper describes the status of roadside deployment activities and analyzes the policies and practices of cooperative driving in the European Union. Finally, two review papers, one on congestion control techniques for VANETs and the other on fault tolerance techniques for vehicular networks, conclude the book.

Abstract

The Special Issue “Technological Eco-Innovations for the Quality Control and the Decontamination of Polluted Waters and Soils” deals with the most recent research activities carried out at lab and field scale on eco-sustainable tools for the remediation of contaminated environmental substrates. Abstract

The purpose of this Special Issue “Cow’s Milk and Allergy” is to provide an overview of the association of cow’s milk with allergy. This topic has two quite different faces. On the one hand, we are all aware of the importance of cow’s milk allergy in early life. What is less known is that the consumption of raw, unprocessed milk is associated with a lower incidence of asthma and rhinitis. Abstract

Spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana (Clem.)) outbreaks are a dominant natural disturbance in the forests of Canada and northeastern USA. Widespread, severe defoliation by this native insect results in large-scale mortality and growth reductions of spruce (Picea sp.) and balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.) forests, and largely determines future age–class structure and productivity. The last major spruce budworm outbreak defoliated over 58 million hectares in the 1970s–1980s, and caused 32–43 million m3/year of timber volume losses from 1978 to 1987, in Canada. Management to deal with spruce budworm outbreaks has emphasized forest protection, spraying registered insecticides to prevent defoliation and keep trees alive. Other tactics can include salvage harvesting, altering harvest schedules to remove the most susceptible stands, or reducing future susceptibility by planting or thinning. Chemical insecticides are no longer used, and protection strategies use biological insecticides Bacillus thuringiensis (B.t.) or tebufenozide, a specific insect growth regulator. Over the last five years, a $30 million research project has tested another possible management tactic, termed an ‘early intervention strategy’, aimed at area-wide management of spruce budworm populations. This includes intensive monitoring to detect ‘hot spots’ of rising budworm populations before defoliation occurs, targeted insecticide treatment to prevent spread, and detailed research into target and non-target insect effects. The objective of this Special Issue is to compile the most recent research on protection strategies against spruce budworm. A series of papers will describe results and prospects for the use of an early intervention strategy in spruce budworm and other insect management.

Abstract

The cytoplasm of Gram-negative bacteria is bound by three layers: an inner membrane, a layer of peptidoglycan, and an outer membrane. The outer membrane is an asymmetric lipidic bilayer, with phospholipids on its inner surface and lipopolysaccharides (LPSs) on the outside, with the latter being the major component of the outer leaflet and covering nearly three-quarters of the total outer cell surface. All LPSs possess the same general chemical architecture independently of bacterial activity (pathogenic, symbiotic, commensal), ecological niche (human, animal, soil, plant, water), or growth conditions. Endotoxins are large amphiphilic molecules consisting of a hydrophilic polysaccharide component and a covalently bound hydrophobic and highly conserved lipid component, termed lipid A (the endotoxin subunit). The polysaccharide component can be divided into two subdomains: the internal and conserved core region as well as the more external and highly variable O-specific chain, also referred to as the O-antigen due to its immunogenic properties. LPSs are endotoxins, one of the most potent class of activators of the mammalian immune system; they can be released from cell surfaces of bacteria during multiplication, lysis, and death. LPS can act through its biological center (lipid A component) on various cell types, of which macrophages and monocytes are the most important.

Abstract

Supporting initiation, development and resolution of appropriate immune responses is key to survival. Many nutrients and dietary components have been purported to have a role in supporting optimal immune function. This is vital throughout the life course, from the development and programming of the immune system in early life, to supporting immunity and reducing chronic inflammation in older people. In this special issue of Nutrients, we examine the evidence for the role of diet and dietary components in promoting protective immunity.
