Abstract

The volume provides 332 abstracts of charters issued by Emperor Frederick III (1440-1493) between 1476 and 1479, which are preserved in the former Habsburg House and State Archives (Haus-, Hof- und Staatsarchiv) in Vienna. During this period, the course for the future was set: in the West, the war of succession in the Duchy of Burgundy began, in the East, persistent tensions with Hungary resulted in open war. Thus, the most significant documents of the volume are those referring to the peace negotiations with the King of Hungary, Matthias Corvinus (1477), and the complex of charters related to the investiture of Frederick´s son Maximilian with Burgundy (1478), whereas a main focus is on the administration of the hereditary Habsburg territories, which are marked by an increase in written records and also charters issued by the imperial chancellery.

Abstract

The present volume lists 222 charters and letters of Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, Frederick III. (1440-1493), issued between 1480 and 1482. The charters highlight sequences of political conflicts from the southwest to the northeast of the Empire, from Konstanz and Tyrol/Trento to Friesland and Riga, such as the replacement of the archbishop of Salzburg. Most of the charters and letters however serve to illustrate the more or less "regular" activities and official acts that were executed by Frederick III. as the local ruler of the Habsburgian hereditary territories.

Abstract

The volume, which has emerged from an international conference of the same title, unites a range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary contributions on invasions of Goths and other Germanic tribes into the Roman Empire, focusing primarily on the third-century CE. The newly discovered fragments of the lost work Scythica by the third-century historian Dexippus of Athens, the so-called Scythica Vindobonensia alias Dexippus Vindobonensis, which survived in a Greek palimpsest kept in the Austrian National Library in Vienna, have great impact on the study of this field. The contributions explore the Vienna fragments in their historical and historiographical contexts, from the Roman to the Byzantine Era, and the history of the invasions themselves.
