Abstract

Abstract

This book provides the first critical edition of the first French translation of Cicero's De officiis. Anjourrant Bourré's Livre des offices offers a new perspective on the reception of Cicero's moral and political thougth in late medieval and early Renaissance France. The critical edition, based upon all surviving testimonies, provides, besides the edited text, a study of the textual transmission, an analysis of the linguistic aspects as well as of the translation process, a glossary, explicative notes and an index.

Abstract

Although Franz Brentano was one of the most influential turn-of-the-century philosophers, he, like Ludwig Wittgenstein, published little but left a large philosophical legacy. This study examines the biographical and theoretical reasons for Brentano’s reluctance to publish and offers an overview of the checkered history of his philosophical legacy.

Abstract

When talking about monuments, size undeniably matters – or does it? But how else can we measure monumentality? Bringing together researchers from various fields such as archaeology, museology, history, sociology, Mesoamerican studies, and art history, this book discusses terminological and methodological approaches in both theoretical contributions and various case studies. While focusing on architectural aspects, this volume also discusses the social meaning of monuments, the role of forced and free labour, as well as textual monumentality. The result is a modern interdisciplinary take on an important concept which is notoriously difficult to define. When talking about monuments, size undeniably matters – or does it? Abstract

[English]: This research is built on three different topics, which are interwoven ("spazi di transito"). The first one deals with sleep, sleeplesness and dreams in Statius' Thebaid; secondly, Silius Italicus' treatment of the same themes are analyzed; thirdly, Onorato Occioni's translation of Punica 1 in 'endecasillabi sciolti' in XIXth Century in Italy are compared to the translation by Cesare Beligoni, with the conclusion of a certain amount of plagiarism. It is an original study, text-oriented and innovative, which gives a contribution to the rich scenario of Flavian studies worldwide.

Abstract

This innovative study regards National Socialist criminal law—in accordance with the theories of continuity and radicalisation—as the racist (anti-Semitic), nationalistic (Germanic) and totalitarian updating of the authoritarian and anti-liberal tendencies found in German criminal law at the turn of the 20th century and during the Weimar Republic. The author proves this thesis through systematic analysis of the works of relevant authors, focusing primarily on the texts, which speak for themselves, rather than on morally judging the people who wrote them. In doing so, he also examines the reception of German (National Socialist) criminal law in Latin America. The aforementioned continuity did not only exist from a past perspective (post-Weimar), but also from a forward-looking perspective (‘the Bonn Republic’ 1949–1990). In short, neither did National Socialist criminal law appear from nowhere, nor did it completely disappear after 1945, which has seamlessly led to the modern-day attempt to reconstruct the identity of this Germanic myth through the so-called ‘neue Rechte’ or ‘New Right’ political movement.

Abstract

Mike Mosher’s “Some Aspects of Californian Cyberpunk” vividly reminds us of the influence of West Coast counterculture on cyberpunks, with special emphasis on 1960s theoretical gurus such as Timothy Leary and Marshall McLuhan, who explored the frontiers of inner space as well as the global village. Frenchy Lunning’s “Cyberpunk Redux: Dérives in the Rich Sight of Post-Anthropocentric Visuality” examines how the heritage of Ridley Scott’s techno-noir film

Abstract

International migration, particularly to Europe, has increased in the last few decades, making research on aspects of this phenomenon, including numbers, challenges, and successes, particularly vital. This Special Issue highlights this necessary and relevant area of research. It presents 37 articles including studies on diverse topics relating to the health of refugees and migrants. Most articles (28) present studies focusing on European host countries. The focus on Europe is justified if we take into consideration the increased number of refugees and migrants who have come to Europe in recent years. However, there are also articles which present studies from countries in other continents. The topics discussed in the Issue include healthcare utilization, infectious diseases, mother and child health, mental health, and chronic diseases. Finding from the included articles indicate that further development of guidelines and policies at both local and international levels is needed. Priorities must be set by encouraging and funding in-depth research that aims to evaluate the impact of existing policies and interventions. Such research will help us formulate recommendations for the development of strategies and approaches that improve and strengthen the integration of migrants and refugees into the host countries.
