Abstract

Nanomedicine is the application of nanotechnology in medicines at an atomic, molecular, and supramolecular level. Nanomedicine covers a wide range of topics from the development of nanomaterials for use in medicines to the synthesis of nanomedicines with their multiple applications. The major focus of the book is on developments in nanomedicines and their effectiveness compared to conventional drugs. Some drugs are administered twice daily for days and weeks. However, the frequency of administration and dosage of drugs can be reduced to increase patient compliance when prepared at the nanoscale level with polymers, etc. This book contains five chapters from leading scientists working in the area of nanomedicines. Particular topics that are highlighted are exosomes, nanoantimicrobial solutions, transethosomes, nanoethosomes, nanoparticles, multifunctional drugs, and natural dietary products.

Abstract

Endoscopic techniques are widely used for screening, diagnostic and therapeutic maneuvers in all groups of patients and for a large spectrum of complaints. The availability of basic iterations of endoscopic techniques made screening programs for various diseases viable in most parts of the world, while the advent of modern techniques opens new perspectives for rapid and correct diagnosis. Going beyond normal human vision, innovative techniques opened the prospect of in-situ pathology. Endoscopic ultrasound has made incredible progress in recent years. Reaching the smaller orifices by endoscopy was a major step forward in the surveillance of previously inaccessible lesions. Investigatory techniques were complemented by advances in therapy, with novel applications in many major areas of medicine.

Abstract

Osteochondral defects can be challenging to treat, first, because the damaged articular cartilage has a poor intrinsic reparative capability, and second, because these defects cause chronic pain and serious disability. That is why cartilage repair remains one of the most challenging issues of musculoskeletal medicine. Arthroscopic and open techniques that have been developed over the last two decades intend to promote the success of complete repair of the articular cartilage defects; nevertheless, these therapies cannot always offer 100% success. Nowadays, cartilage tissue engineering is an emerging technique for the regeneration of cartilage tissue. Taking into consideration these perspectives, this book aims to present a summary of cartilage tissue engineering, including development, recent progress, and major steps taken toward the regeneration of functional cartilage tissue. Special emphasis is placed on the role of stimulating factors, including growth factors, gene therapies, as well as scaffolds, including natural, synthetic, and nanostructured.

Abstract

Systems biology is the inevitable outcome of long years of knowledge acquisition and data accumulation. The aim of systems biology is to integrate in a seamless way all existing knowledge in interconnected disciplines, stretching from modern biomedical research to physics, chemistry, and mathematics. The main integration tool of such complex biomedical systems is via computational and mathematical modeling. In this direction, a series of state-of-the-art computer science techniques are used, namely, data mining and fusion, machine learning, and deep learning all under the prism of big data. All in all, systems biology is at the arrowhead of modern and state-of-the-art biomedical research by attempting to address key biological questions describing holistically complex biological systems.

Abstract

Microfluidics-based devices play an important role in creating realistic microenvironments in which cell cultures can thrive. They can, for example, be used to monitor drug toxicity and perform medical diagnostics, and be in a static-, perfusion- or droplet-based device. They can also be used to study cell-cell, cell-matrix or cell-surface interactions. Cells can be either single cells, 3D cell cultures or co-cultures. Other organisms could include bacteria, zebra fish embryo, C. elegans, to name a few.
