Abstract

Biogenic amines (BAs) are low-molecular-mass organic bases that occur in plant- and animal-derived products. BAs in food can occur by free amino acid enzymatic decarboxylation and other metabolic processes. Usually, in the human body, amines contained in foods are quickly detoxified by enzymes such as amine oxidases or by conjugation; however, in allergic individuals or if monoamine oxidase inhibitors are applied, the detoxification process is disturbed and BAs accumulate in the body. Knowing the concentration of BAs is essential because they can affect human health and also because they can be used as freshness indicators to estimate the degree of food spoilage.

Abstract

This book covers a very important research field; specifically, it tries to decrease the gap between theoretical and clinical research. The tendency of world research is to gain a detailed insight into the living organs of animals and humans. However, we must not lose sight of the problems that these organs can present; for example, we need to understand their molecular and biochemical mechanisms, as well as new drug productions to counteract diseases. Very deep mechanisms can offer new therapeutic pathways in hematology and oncology, among other fields. However, at least 8-l0 years of further clinical studies are necessary to make a final decision regarding the real clinical importance of basic research. Ideally, an interdisciplinary efforts among basic and clinical researchers are necessary in common research fields. At the same time, genetic research is increasing dramatically (e.g. enzyme mutations). The primary aim of this book is to demonstrate how such research can be used in both fields. This book gathers knowledge from experts in basic and clinical science, biochemistry, pharmacology, molecular pharmacology, genetics, and other fields.

Abstract

This Special Issue has been introduced with the aim of offering the possibility to publish new research results from old and new pioneers in the field of bladder cancer basic research. While editing this Special Issue we learned that an enormous enthusiasm is necessary to go on in bladder cancer research. In our eyes, bladder cancer is on one hand a very heterogenous malignancy, which is what makes it so difficult to focus on only one bladder cancer marker in bladder cancer diagnostics and follow-up. On the other hand, it is very important to find prognostic and predictive factors for bladder cancer due to its high incidence and its enormous costs, as one of the most expensive malignancies in the world. Finding and developing new bladder cancer markers is still a very dynamic field. Because there are many of these markers, it is impossible to report all of them. This Special Issue attempts to highlight the role of bladder cancer markers in diagnosis, and the most important biomarkers that have been recently studied and reported. This Special Issue highlights some of the most important markers. Further determination of recurrence and progression markers will contribute to establishing better treatments for individual patients. Molecular staging of urological tumors will allow the selection of cases that will require systemic treatment. It is necessary and important to integrate basic and clinical research under the same objectives.

Abstract

Kinetics of Enzymatic Synthesis gives insight into different aspects of chemical reactions that are catalyzed by enzymes. This book is divided into two sections: ""Enzyme Kinetics"" and ""Enzymatic Synthesis"". The first section consists of two chapters with a halophilic enzyme kinetics and thermodynamic approach towards analyzing the influence of co-solvents on the Michaelis constants of enzyme-catalyzed reactions. The second section consists of three chapters. Production of isoamyl acetate using the enzymatic synthesis method between acetic anhydride and isoamyl alcohol by having enzyme Candida antarctica Lipase B as catalyst in a solvent-free system is discussed in the third chapter. The integrated scheme with the use of the filtrate from the pretreatment of the CS and the growth conditions of Pleurotus cystidiosus is studied in the fourth chapter. The last chapter of this section provides the conditions of the key parameters in microfluidic systems (residence times, flow rates, concentrations) applied for a sequential process from liquid/liquid extraction of LVV-h7.

Abstract

Oncogenes are mutated and/or overexpressed at high levels in tumor cells. Tumors of the lung, breast, pancreas, and colon may display specific oncogenetic features. These tumors have been largely associated with exposure to environmental carcinogens and a variety of biological agents, including viruses. These carcinogens can induce specific genetic and epigenetic alterations in these tissues, leading to aberrant functioning of oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes. On the microRNAs (miRNAs) there are significant modifiers of both transcription and translation of oncogenes in carcinogenesis. In the last 50 years, several oncogenes and microRNAs related to these oncogenes have been identified in different types of human cancers. It is now clear that high expression of oncogenes, DNA damage response, and regulation of the cell cycle are related to the circadian clock. This book will mainly focus on the expressions of different oncogenes in breast, colon, and lung cancers. Moreover, readers will gain qualified scientific knowledge of the alterations in miRNAs in different types of cancers and the effects of the circadian clock on the expression of oncogenes in carcinogenesis.

Abstract

Staphylococcus aureus strains are an important medical infectious agent that causes a wide range of pathogeneses starting from colonization of the skin and mucosal surface to severe pathogenic effects such as septicemia. The mortality and morbidity from this pathogen are challenging issues for the healthcare premises. Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains (MRSA) are causing severe infections due to the genes that are resistant to several antibiotics including methicillin, aminoglycosides, and others. Recently, there have been several reports related to failure of treatment plans caused by MRSA that led to Vancomycin Intermediate Staphylococcus aureus strains (VISA) or, in sporadic cases, resistance to the drug of choice. This book highlights the new areas for the treatment of MRSA using natural products. The implementation of specific products produced by this organism can help the scientist to obtain a new window for treatments such as anticancer chemotherapy, antioxidants, etc.
