Abstract

L’invenzione del cinema, perfezionamento della fotografia, ha dato modo agli umani di vedere doppi realistici di corpi in azione, in realtà ombre, fantasmi, spettri, prima muti, poi parlanti, suscitabili a piacere a ogni proiezione, con il solo limite d’essere condannati a ripetere ogni volta gli stessi gesti, a pronunciare le stesse parole. Eppure questo limite non è solo una condanna, non è solo ripetizione, non ricalca necessariamente i sentieri dell’identico. Il cinema, in certi casi, è in grado di veicolare con le sue immagini qualcosa come una quintessenza, e quelle ombre, quegli spettri, quei doppi, sono in grado di dirci, sul nostro corpo, sul rapporto con il mondo, sui movimenti, sui gesti, sul tempo, sull’identità, sulla memoria, sul mito, qualcosa di rilevante anche sul piano filosofico. È quanto si spera risulti dalla lettura di queste note, avvertendo comunque che esse, nel loro andamento non sistematico, si appoggeranno a oggetti e soggetti filmici in apparenza eterogenei, da Pasolini a Orson Welles, da Rossellini a Bela Tarr, da Raul Ruiz a Bressane, da Tsai Ming Liang a Cronenberg, da Ejzenštejn a Godard, da Dreyer a Scorsese, da Fellini a Gianikian e Ricci Lucchi, da Chantal Akerman a Twin Peaks 3, non senza qualche rapido excursus teatrale, tra Artaud e Carmelo Bene.

The Archivision Research Library is a collection of 100,000 digital images of art and architecture professionally photographed by a trained architect. It documents the built environment--from ancient monuments to cutting-edge contemporary constructions--with extensive, standardized descriptive metadata. Archivision is accessible for research and teaching through a web-based application--a dedicated hosted instance of MDID--with vrcHost LLC delivering full services and technical support: installation, integration, and maintenance. This combination provides not only instant access to Archivision, but also to sophisticated tools for managing images using an open source media management system to discover, aggregate, study, and present digital media.

Ce livre fait le pari de l’intelligence de la bande dessinée. Une intelligence profondément subversive. Intelligence cognitive, puisqu’elle sait fort bien se théoriser elle-même. L’analyste n’ayant plus, alors, qu’à se mettre modestement à son écoute. Première subversion. Intelligence sémiotique, ensuite, puisque tout est donné à voir à travers le dessin en bande dessinée (y compris son dispositif et même l’invisible) et que le décor et les corps jouent un rôle considérable dans la construction du récit. Deuxième subversion. Intelligence médiatique, enfin, puisque la bande ­dessinée transforme son lecteur en témoin et que ses formes sémiotiques s’inventent à travers différents supports qu’elle sait tout aussi bien mettre à son service, nouant alors histoire et théorie. Troisième subversion. La bande dessinée constitue ainsi une forme singulière d’intelligence narrative graphique et un appareil – notion proposée par Jean-Louis Déotte – profondément subversif. Pascal Robert est professeur des universités à l’Enssib où il anime le séminaire « La bande dessinée en questions ». Il a dirigé « Bande dessinée et numérique » (CNRS Éditions, 2016) et publié « De l’incommunication au miroir de la bande dessinée » (Presses universitaires Blaise Pascal, 2017).

Abstract

This volume captures the status of digital humanities within the Arts in South Africa. The primary research methodology falls within the broader tradition of phenomenological hermeneutics, with a specific emphasis on visual hermeneutics. Some of the tools utilised as part of the visual hermeneutic methods are geographic information system (GIS) mapping, sensory ethnography and narrative pathways. Digital humanities is positioned here as the necessary engagement of the humanities with the pervasive digital culture of the 21st century. It is posited that the humanities and arts, in particular, have an essential role to play in unlocking meaning from scientific, technological and data-driven research. The critical engagement with digital humanities is foregrounded throughout the volume, as this crucial engagement works through images. Images (as understood within image studies) are not merely another form of text but always more than text. As such, this book is the first of its kind in the South African scholarly landscape, and notably also a first on the African continent. Its targeted audience include both scholars within the humanities, particularly in the arts and social sciences. Researchers pursuing the new field of digital humanities may also find the ideas presented in this book significant. Several of the chapters analyse the question of dealing with digital humanities through representations of the self as viewed from the Global South. However, it should be noted that self-representation is not the only area covered in this volume. The latter chapters of the book discuss innovative ways of implementing digital humanities strategies and methodologies for teaching and researching in South Africa.
