Abstract

"Phenomics" is an emerging area of research whose aspiration is the systematic measurement of the physical, physiological and biochemical traits (the phenome) belonging to a given individual or collection of individuals. Non-destructive or minimally invasive techniques allow repeated measurements across time to follow phenotypes as a function of developmental time. These longitudinal traits promise new insights into the ways in which crops respond to their environment including how they are managed.To maximize the benefit, these approaches should ideally be scalable so that large populations in multiple environments can be sampled repeatedly at reasonable cost. Thus, the development and validation of non-contact sensing technologies remains an area of intensive activity that ranges from Remote Sensing of crops within the landscape to high resolution at the subcellular level. Integration of this potentially highly dimensional data and linking it with variation at the genetic level is an ongoing challenge that promises to release the potential of both established and under-exploited crops.

Abstract

This Special Issue "Advanced Nanoindentation in Materials" contains some of the latest developments in the field of small-scale contact mechanics for a wide range of materials and biological cells. The featured manuscript revealed a new ultra-high strain rate nanoindentation method that will enable new scientific understanding of time-dependent material properties. The book also presents unique material properties of super alloys and other structural materials characterized by indentation methods. In addition to engineering materials, deformation behaviors of live cancer cells on sharp pillar structures were discussed in this book with the hope to stimulate interest in the mechanical contact behaviors of biological cells.

[English]:This work intends to collect the results of studies and researches which contribute to strengthening the knowledge of the area and in documenting all these shades that converge on qualifying in a cultural entity as collective heritage: the single heritages, through knowledge can obtain in this way not only an adequate representation. It is thus not by chance, that this book is dedicated to the city of Naples, a city with a strong and complex identity, with classical roots, full of conflict and eager to confrontations; the artistic and cultural heritage that this city preserves, almost a catalogue of the entire Mediterranean civilization, of which it is the symbol, is made of great testimonies, but also of small fragments, of layers and mixtures, which together converge on the culture of ‘making a system’ aimed at the creation of a territory network, at the bringing closer and understanding of single cultural identities, at a best mutual perception. [Italiano]: Questo lavoro raccoglie gli esiti di studi e ricerche volti a rafforzare la conoscenza del luogo e a documentare tutte quelle sfumature che concorrono a qualificare una entità culturale come bene collettivo. I singoli oggetti dello spazio urbano, seppur diversi l’uno dall’altro, ora per dimensioni, ora per tipologia, ora per epoca, attraverso l’indagine analitica, possono ottenere non solo una rappresentazione adeguata ma anche e soprattutto una necessaria divulgazione. E non a caso questo lavoro è dedicato alla città di Napoli, una città dalla identità forte e complessa, dalle radici classiche, piena di conflitti e desiderosa di confronto; il patrimonio artistico e culturale che questa città custodisce, quasi un catalogo dell’intera civiltà mediterranea di cui è simbolo, è fatto di grandi testimonianze ma anche di piccoli frammenti, di commistioni e stratificazioni che, tutti insieme, concorrono alla cultura del ‘fare sistema’ finalizzata alla creazione di una rete di attenzione al territorio, all’avvicinamento e alla comprensione delle singole identità culturali, alla migliore percezione reciproca. Ogni oggetto o frammento può essere ricomposto nell’insieme più ampio della città e concorre a descrivere un racconto per immagini, per grafie, per segni.

Abstract

Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) sensing has progressed significantly in the past few years. In particular, smart sensors play an increasingly important role in structural damage detection. There is growing progress in the performance of strategic sensors, such as piezoelectric sensors, as well as noncontact sensors, such as air-coupled transducers, magnetic flux leakage sensors and pulsed laser ultrasonic propagation applications. The most progress has been made in the development of application software for all technologies. We are now able to enhance damage resolutions and then focus on damage visualization in many applications.This Special Issue highlights advances in the development, testing, and use of damage visualization tools for smart sensor-based nondestructive evaluations. Abstract

Image processing in agriculture and forestry represents a challenge towards the automation of tasks for better performances. Agronomists, computer and robotics engineers, and agricultural machinery industry manufacturers now have at their disposal a book containing a collection of methods, procedures, designs, and descriptions at the technological forefront, which serves as an important support and aid for the implementation and development of their own ideas.The book describes: (1) Applications (canopy on trees, aboveground biomass, phenotyping, chlorophyll, leaf area index, water and nutrient content, land cover change, soil properties, and secure autonomous navigation); (2) Imaging devices onboard robots, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and satellites operating at different spectral ranges (visible, infrared, hyper-multispectral bands, and radar), as well as guidelines for selecting machine vision systems in outdoor environments; and (3) (Specific computer vision methods (generic and convolutional neural networks, machine learning, specific segmentation approaches, vegetation indices, and three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction).

Abstract

Mobile robotic systems need to perceive their surroundings in order to act independently. In this work a perception framework is developed which interprets the data of a binocular camera in order to transform it into a compact, expressive model of the environment. This model enables a mobile system to move in a targeted way and interact with its surroundings. It is shown how the developed methods also provide a solid basis for technical assistive aids for visually impaired people.

Abstract

While the spectral information contained in hyperspectral images is rich, the spatial resolution of such images is in many cases very low. Many pixel spectra are mixtures of pure materials’ spectra and therefore need to be decomposed into their constituents. This work investigates new decomposition methods taking into account spectral, spatial and global 3D adjacency information. This allows for faster and more accurate decomposition results.

Abstract

Document Image Processing allows systems like OCR, writer identification, writer recognition, check processing, historical document processing, etc., to extract useful information from document images. What we call a document image ranges from images of historical documents written on various surfaces, to synthetic images (useful for creating datasets) and videos including text. In order to succeed, many preprocessing tasks can be required: document skew detection and correction, slant removal, binarization and segmentation procedures, as well as other normalization tasks. These low-level tasks are generally followed by high-level tasks such as the recognition or spotting of textual elements (characters, words, or text lines). The intent of this Special Issue is to collect the experiences of leading scientists of the field, but also to be an assessment tool for people who are new to the world of document image processing.

Neutrosophic logic and set are gaining significant attention in solving many real-life problems that involve uncertainty, impreciseness, vagueness, incompleteness, inconsistency, and indeterminacy.
