Abstract

This book is a combination of innovative research submitted to a conference on Cities’ Identity Through Architecture and Arts (CITAA) whereas scholars from all over the worldgather in one venue to discuss cultural, historical, and economic issues of the city. Thus, thebook offers a collective and global solution that is applicable on a universal level. The research presented in this book was conducted by authors, or rather participants ofthe conference from, three different continents of the world and organized by IEREK. It wasa distinct opportunity for them to share their thoughts with leading scholars and professionalsin the field of Architecture, Arts, and Planning. The research and materials in this book are directed at those who are actively engaged inthe decision-making processes and to a heterogeneous audience who has an interest to criticallyexamine all the new literature available in the field.A special word of thanks should be made to the editors of this book and to all the authorsand co-authors of the chapters who collectively provided the academic community withunique and increasingly valuable literature.

Abstract

"What is prison architecture and how can it be studied? How are concepts such as humanism, dignity and solidarity translated into prison architecture? What kind of ideologies and ideas are expressed in various prison buildings from different eras and locations? What is the outside and the inside of a prison, and what is the significance of movement within the prison space? What does a lunch table have to do with prison architecture? How do prisoners experience materiality in serving a prison sentence? These questions are central to the texts presented in this anthology. Prison, Architecture and Humans is the result of a collaboration between researchers and architects from Italy, Norway and Sweden. It presents new approaches to prison architecture and penological research by focusing on prison design, prison artefacts, everyday prison life and imprisoned bodies. The book will be of interest to students, researchers, architects and politicians."

Abstract

Fonthill, in Wiltshire, is traditionally associated with the writer and collector William Beckford who built his Gothic fantasy house called Fonthill Abbey at the end of the eighteenth century. The collapse of the Abbey’s tower in 1825 transformed the name Fonthill into a symbol for overarching ambition and folly, a sublime ruin. Fonthill is, however, much more than the story of one man’s excesses. Beckford’s Abbey is only one of several important houses to be built on the estate since the early sixteenth century, all of them eventually consumed by fire or deliberately demolished, and all of them oddly forgotten by historians. Little now remains: a tower, a stable block, a kitchen range, some dressed stone, an indentation in a field. Fonthill Recovered draws on histories of art and architecture, politics and economics to explore the rich cultural history of this famous Wiltshire estate. The first half of the book traces the occupation of Fonthill from the Bronze Age to the twenty-first century. Some of the owners surpassed Beckford in terms of their wealth, their collections, their political power and even, in one case, their sexual misdemeanours. They include Charles I’s Chancellor of the Exchequer, and the richest commoner in the nineteenth century. The second half of the book consists of essays on specific topics, filling out such crucial areas as the complex history of the designed landscape, the sources of the Beckfords’ wealth and their collections, and one essay that features the most recent appearance of the Abbey in a video game.

Abstract

Nothing in MoMA is a series of photographs captured in areas of Manhattan museums in which there are no artworks, written words, or people. Addressing the “grammar that organizes and secures our scene of looking,” in the words of art historian David Joselit’s introduction, the book imagines a composite empty museum or a narrative of marginal attention. Originally displayed in partial prototype as a children’s board book at Artists Space in 2015, Nothing in MoMA is here collected for the first time in the series’ entirety. Evoking the history of indeterminacy as much as that of institutional critique, the deadpan composition of Adams’s photographs likewise recalls François Jullien’s theory of bland aesthetics, in a playful reductio of socio-institutional space to a bare literality. Both a visual essay on museum phenomenology and a performance document, Nothing in MoMA describes a choreography of avoidance, in which a conceptual constraint becomes a means of seeing and navigating concrete space.

Abstract

Wrapped in modernist architect Marcel Breuer’s 1971 addition to the Cleveland Museum of Art, A Treatise on the Marvelous for Prestigious Museums considers the global ecological catastrophe by way of a speculative address to the art museums of the future, revisiting mid-century modes of site-specificity and speculative collage as utopian practices for the present. Written over the course of a decade, the book insists on the continuing importance of the New American Poetry and Language poetics, and includes work in the tradition of the ongoing serial poem and documentary poetics. This full color edition reproduces the maps, diagrams, and facsimiles that adorn the treatise.

Abstract

In the 1960s, between the construction of the Berlin Wall (1961) and the change of power (Ulbricht / Honecker 1971), a field of tension between the claim to power and truth of the SED on one side and the subjective obstinacy of the works of art and their creators on the other hand developed. Within it, debates arose regarding the question of the design and appearance of a future, technologically high developed and scientific socialism. Working. Living. Computer tracks down questions about the appearance of the worker of the future, the future of living, and the significance of the computer in the future and analyses these imaginative worlds of socialist dreams and desires in image, architecture, and texts.

Abstract

This eBook contains ten articles on the topic of representation of abstract concepts, both simple and complex, at the neural level in the brain. Seven of the articles directly address the main competing theories of mental representation – localist and distributed. Four of these articles argue – either on a theoretical basis or with neurophysiological evidence – that abstract concepts, simple or complex, exist (have to exist) at either the single cell level or in an exclusive neural cell assembly. There are three other papers that argue for sparse distributed representation (population coding) of abstract concepts. There are two other papers that discuss neural implementation of symbolic models. The remaining paper deals with learning of motor skills from imagery versus actual execution. A summary of these papers is provided in the Editorial.

Abstract

The publication on the so-called „Temple of Hadrian" on Curetes' Street in Ephesos is the first comprehensive publication of this important monument from the Roman Imperial period in Asia Minor. Based on new research on architecture, inscriptions, and decoration, a contextual interpretation allows us to understand the temple in the context of the cult for the city goddess Artemis and ritual processions through the Ephesian city center in her honor.Text see: http://e-book.fwf.ac.at/o:1150Tables see: http://e-book.fwf.ac.at/o:1151

Abstract

Education has shape. Such a quality, inherent to human formation processes, can be verified through centuries. The present text displays several sound theoretical arguments, oriented towards two basic goals: Investigate the historical connection between the architectural and educational dimensions, in terms of innovation. Propose a series of creative strategies that can be useful for universities when planning their urban&architectural implantations. Thus, one of the underlying intentions is to set up synergies between three aspects: the expressed theoretical arguments, the project references, and the one corresponding to pedagogical activities developed within disciplines narrowly associated to the remarked creativity. Such synergies converge in the present work, in order to compose a thematic body that, combining the cited conceptual base with the always exemplary praxis (both educational and architectural), serves as a valid tool to inspire processes of pedagogical and spatial requalification in Higher Education institutions. Under a global perspective, this text is the outcome of innovative actions carried out by the two authors in the last years, combining research and teaching initiatives in the areas of knowledge of Architecture and Fashion, which traditionally have shared a series of composition features in their designs. Following a global impulse addressed to foster creativity, they were developed in the Escuela Politécnica Superior (USPCEU), and in the Centro Superior de Diseño de Moda de Madrid (UPM). In addition, it is analyzed the relation existing in those innovative activities between the educational and spatial aspects. Consequently, this work is characterized by its interdisciplinary profile, which can promote future creative teaching&learning projects in different areas of knowledge. The overall intention is to provide universities with innovative experiences that can help them all to foster sound optimizations of their mission, affecting both the educational dimension and its urban&architectural shape.---La Educación posee forma.
