Abstract

In the summer of 1704, Antonio Vallisneri (1661–1730), the preeminent Italian physician and natural philosopher of his time, traveled with a “daring soul” and “trembling feet” across the “silent horrors” of the northern Apennines: down the hills south of Reggio Emilia to northern Tuscany and the western edge of his native land, the Province of Garfagnana. He then wrote a report of this adventure, the Primi Itineris per Montes Specimen Physico-Medicum (“Physico-medical example of a first journey through the mountains"), and sent it to the Royal Society of London, hoping for its publication in Philosophical Transactions. Unfortunately this did not happen and the manuscript disappeared from sight. The original draft, however, survived in the State Archive of the Italian city of Reggio Emilia where it was found in 2009. With its exceptional array of geological, medical, geographical, technical, ethnographic, and historical data, the Primi Itineris Specimen is one of the earliest and most well-documented attempts to define a systematic approach to field research. Its frantically reworked pages and anxious marginal notes offer a new and precious opportunity to understand why and how experimental data and theories in the early modern period interacted and shaped the development of many crucial debates. These include the discovering of deep-time, the comprehension of geological phenomena (such as the hydrologic cycle and the origin of mountains and fossils), the perception of man’s place in nature, the constant search for new therapeutics, the tormented and charming relation between science and religion.

Abstract

This volume collects the earliest contributions to what is now known as quantum gravity research: the attempt to bring together quantum theory and the general theory of relativity. Covering the period from 1916-1950, it shows the beginnings of an unsolved problem that still remains as such today. The original sources are interspersed with historical essays, which together provide the first scholarly historical overview of quantum gravity in the first half of the twentieth Century. The combination of historical analysis and original sources make this a volume of interest to historians, philosophers, and physicists alike. - Edition Open Sources (EOS) pioneers a new paradigm in publishing, devoted to open access and high-quality peer review. This collaborative scholarly endeavor publishes academic editions of primary sources in the history of science in online, digital, and print formats. EOS publications present new editions of original sources with facsimile reproductions, in part also with translations, and with an introduction to the authors and the context in which they worked. The sources are typically historical books, manuscripts, documents or other material that is otherwise difficult to access. EOS a collaboration be-tween the University of Oklahoma Libraries, the Department for the History of Science of the University of Oklahoma and the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin.

Abstract

The edition of the documentary sources comprises the list of donations which contains reports from (allegedly) 1060 to 1341, also charters from 1135 to 1249 and supplementary sources especially from the later Middle Ages, however with lots of references to the early days of the history of the monastery. This is followed by the necrology written shortly before 1300 which has unusually close ties to the list of donations, and the calendar. Additionally there are extensive discussions concerning the history of research, the manuscripts, to certain sources up to controversival questions of localization.

Abstract

The fourteenth volume of the critical edition of pope Innocent III’s chancery-registers is containing 161 letters addressed to recipients all over Europe and in the Middle East. In this year of the pontificate, no geographical focus is discernible. However, christianitas as threatened at three frontiers (in Spain and the East by Muslims, in Southern France by heretics) is a topic constantly recurring in the Pope’s letters. The register of Innocent’s fourteenth year of pontificate is one of the four volumes transmitted not as original but as a copy written at the Curia in mid-14th century and as print published in the 17th century.

Abstract

The recent developments of Digital Papyrology, in particular the creation of a new platform hosting a textual database of the literary papyri, including special technical texts like the medical papyri, is leading to new thoughts on the concept and shape of the digital critical edition of ancient documents, and to new tools to manage it. The volume collects some contributions on this theme, also in parallel disciplines with the same needs.

Abstract

"Tristan Corbière is a poet who tests language to the limits, dislocating normal syntax, revelling in self-contradictory affirmations, and piling up puns. Born in Brittany in 1845, he died at only 29, leaving to future readers a scattered assortment of texts. This collection brings together several less well-known pieces, some early versions of published poems, and others which were handwritten into his own copy of his only published collection, Les Amours jaunes. Presented as a bilingual edition, this volume offers the first English translations of many of these writings, all of which testify to Corbière’s sly humour, linguistic glee, formal innovation and mordant self-irony. Playful and comic, Corbière’s work is also experimental, subversive and moving. The texts are translated by Christopher Pilling, an award-winning poet, playwright and translator. He is a founder of the Cumbrian Poets workshops, which he has hosted for 35 years, a convenor of Skiddaw u3a, and the organiser of translation days and readings in Keswick. He has translated the work of a number of poets, mainly from French but also from Latin. A beneficiary of the Royal Literary Fund, Christopher is also a member of Parkinson’s UK. Oysters, nightingales and cooking pots provides a fitting sequel to Christopher Pilling’s translation of Tristan Corbière’s Les Amours jaunes, published as These Jaundiced Loves in 1995. The volume is edited by Richard Hibbitt and Katherine Lunn-Rockliffe. Please note that this volume is available in multiple formats for your convenience. If you wish to view the French and English texts side by side to compare the original and translation, please download the free PDF file of the volume and select two-page view or purchase a printed copy. Readers may prefer to download and cite from the PDF version of this book. This has a specific DOI and has a fixed structure with page numbers. Guidance on citing from other ebook versions without stable page numbers (Kindle, EPUB etc.) is now usually offered within style guidance (e.g. by the MLA style guide, The Chicago Manual of Style etc.) so please check the information offered on this by the referencing style you use."

Abstract

Appian’s Celtic History, which deals with the military conflicts between Romans and Celts from the 4th cent. BC until the conquest of Gaul by Caesar, is despite its fragmentary state a valuable source, as it contains various information documented nowhere else or significantly different to those traditions attested by other authors. In addition to the Greek text and a German translation of the individual fragments, the present publication offers above all the first detailed commentary, which makes this little regarded source accessible.
