Abstract

Phosphoric acid is an important industrial acid that is utilized for manufacturing phosphatic fertilizers and industrial products, for pickling and posterior treatment of steel surfaces to prevent corrosion, for ensuring appropriate paint adhesion, and for the food and beverages industry, e.g., cola-type drinks to impart taste and slight acidity and to avoid iron sedimentation. This industry is spread out in countries of four continents - Asia, Africa, America, and Europe - which operate mines and production plants and produce fertilizers. Phosacid is one of the most widely known acids. The global phosacid market and its many phosphate derivatives are expanding worldwide; this trend is expected to continue in the next years, thus producing innovative products.

Abstract

The book ""RoCKIn - Benchmarking Through Robot Competitions"" describes the activities and achievements on the promotion of Robotics research and benchmarking in Europe through robot competitions, carried out within the framework of the RoCKIn (""Robot Competitions Kick Innovation in Cognitive Systems and Robotics"") Coordination Action, a project funded by the European Commission (EC) 7th Framework Programme (FP7). RoCKIn was one of the two pioneer projects on robot competitions in Europe funded by the EC, representing the acknowledgment of robot competitions as important tools to advance research on Robotics, besides education and public awareness of Robotics. Two challenges were selected for the RoCKIn competitions due to their high relevance and impact on Europe's societal and industrial needs: domestic service robots (RoCKIn@Home) and innovative robot applications in industry (RoCKIn@Work). Along the book chapters the reader will find details on RoCKIn@Home and RoCKIn@Work, and about the activities carried out during the project lifetime, namely the developed open domain test beds for competitions targeting the two challenges and usable by researchers worldwide; the scoring and benchmarking methods to assess the performance of robot systems and subsystems; and the building up of a community of new teams. The book ends with an assessment by the project industrial partner about the impact of RoCKIn and other robot competitions on the industrial robot markets.

The project work was funded by the European Commission (EC) 7th Framework Programme (FP7), under the 9th Call for projects on Information and Communication Technologies. The publishing of this book was funded by the EC FP7 Post-Grant Open Access Pilot programme.

Abstract

Occupational Health deals with all aspects of health and safety in the workplace and has a strong focus on primary prevention of hazards. A wide array of workplace hazards presents risks to the health and safety of people at work, which include physical factors, adverse ergonomic conditions, chemicals, biological agents, allergens, and a complex network of safety risks. This book covers topics from health and safety management, occupational medicine, work-related musculoskeletal disorders, and occupational protection. Thus, it can be utilized as a guide to identify and analyze hazards, assess risk, apply risk reduction strategies, and manage process safety for various occupations.

Abstract

Since first AC current high-power hydropower plant was put in operation, built by Nikola Tesla and George Westinghouse in 1895 on Niagara Falls, electrification of the world has dramatically changed. The growing power demand and energy consumption in the last decades require fundamental changes in the process, power production, and services. These requirements tend to use both conventional and nonconventional energy generation in order to have power plants economically useful and environmentally friendly to the society. The goal of this textbook is to provide an up-to-date review of this important topic with specific emphasis on the current guidelines for improving overall efficiency, lowering emissions, and using large share of renewable energy.

Abstract

Many alcoholic beverages produced using various methods are consumed throughout the world. Alcoholic beverages made by brewing cereals, such as beer and Japanese sake, are extremely popular. Brewing them requires a complicated process by which the cereal must be saccharified using enzymes such as amylase. For example, with beer brewing, malt enzymes are used for saccharification. By germination, malt is made from barley to produce enzymes. Finally, wort is made by processing at higher temperatures using malt. The actual techniques require high-level skills. In this book, the discussion encompasses leading-edge brewing technology with fermentation using a non-Saccharomyces starter, healthy uses of spent grain from brewing processes, and an electronic nose for quality control, but it also includes descriptions of local traditional alcoholic beverages of Korea and Cameroon.

Abstract

This book traces the evolution and trends in research and development (R&D) and sheds light on key R&D practices of vital importance for human, institutional, and economic sector growth. Following an introductory chapter, gathering a pool of knowledge about R&D, the subsequent book chapters are classified into three sections: (1) ""R&D for human growth and prosperity"" with particular focus on human development and research-development-extension relationships, (2) ""R&D for institutional growth"" with particular focus on small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and (3) ""R&D for economic sector growth"" with particular focus on smart microgrids, energy consumption and greenhouse gas emission, and metallurgical industry. Target readers of this book are various economic stakeholders including academia, industry, investors, and public sector entities. Given its transdisciplinary coverage of various areas in research and development, this book fills a knowledge gap and motivates research and innovation among academia, industry, and public sector.

Abstract

The purpose of optimization is to maximize the quality of lives, productivity in time, as well as interests. Therefore, optimization is an ongoing challenge for selecting the best possible among many other inferior designs. For a hundred years in the past, as optimization has been essential to human life, several techniques have been developed and utilized. Such a development has been one of the long-lasting challenges in engineering and science, and it is now clear that the optimization goals in many of real-life problems are unlikely to be achieved without resource for computational techniques. The history of such a development in the optimization techniques starts from the early 1950s and is still in progress. Since then, the efforts behind this development dedicated by many distinguished scientists, mathematicians, and engineers have brought us today a level of quality of lives. This book concerns with the computational optimization in engineering and techniques to resolve the underlying problems in real life. The current book contains studies from scientists and researchers around the world from North America to Europe and from Asia to Australia.
