Abstract

Emotion, stress, and attention recognition are the most important aspects in neuropsychology, cognitive science, neuroscience, and engineering. Biological signals and images processing such as galvanic skin response (GSR), electrocardiography (ECG), heart rate variability (HRV), electromyography (EMG), electroencephalography (EEG), event-related potentials (ERP), eye tracking, functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) have a great help in understanding the mentioned cognitive processes. Emotion, stress, and attention recognition systems based on different soft computing approaches have many engineering and medical applications. The book Emotion and Attention Recognition Based on Biological Signals and Images attempts to introduce the different soft computing approaches and technologies for recognition of emotion, stress, and attention, from a historical development, focusing particularly on the recent development of the field and its specialization within neuropsychology, cognitive science, neuroscience, and engineering. The basic idea is to present a common framework for the neuroscientists from diverse backgrounds in the cognitive neuroscience to illustrate their theoretical and applied research findings in emotion, stress, and attention.

Abstract

Structural health monitoring (SHM) is a new engineering field with a growing tendency, based on technology development focused on data acquisition and analysis, to prevent possible damage in man-made structures and land's natural faults. The data are obtained from sensors and monitoring systems that allow detecting damages on structures, space vehicles, and land natural faults, to model their behavior under adverse scenarios, in order to search the detection of anomalies. Currently, there are many SHM systems with sensors based on different technologies like optical fiber, video cameras, optical scanners, wireless networks, and piezoelectric transducers, among others. In this context, the present book includes selected chapters with theoretical models and applications, to preserve infrastructure and prevent loss of human lives.

Abstract

It has been nearly 5 years since I edited the last version. In this version, the focus is on islet transplantation. In addition, interesting topics dealing with corneal and peripheral nerve transplantation and decellularization are covered. Unfortunately, clinical trials have not started in Japan, the USA, or Europe in the past 5 years. On the other hand, clinical trials were completed in many countries and so on (inventory of human xenotransplantation practices: IXA and HUG in collaboration with the WHO). In addition, in Japan, clinical trials related to cell transplantation have been initiated, and guidelines for xenotransplantation have been revised. In the near future, some clinical trials on xenotransplantation using genetically modified pigs or the microencapsulation of pancreatic islets will start.

Abstract

This year we celebrate the 10th edition of the DeSForM conference series. In 2005, DeSForM was born in (Eindhoven) the Netherlands with the premise of creating meaning through objects, interactions and people. Over the years, the DeSForM community has explored and designed objects through a multi-sensorial approach always aiming at enriching users' experiences with them. Throughout previous editions, we have seen the development from digital and mechanical objects that had enriched sensorial presence to adaptive and intelligent objects that feel almost analogous to reality given their increased information processing power and sensory resolution. These are thanks to the recent developments in the material sciences, robotics, information and sensor technology, and improved production techniques. Consider, for example, developments in wearables and embedded or computational materials. Consequently, the arena that belongs to design researchers and practitioners has gotten more sophisticated by being more technical, but also raises new questions regarding the effect and the impact of the new technologically rich designs. In 2017, DeSForM is returning to its place of birth opening up to a broader audience with deeper insights to debate about the future of dynamic 'form' giving and its effects on people and their environment.
