The publication presents a detailed architectural documentation and reconstruction of the impressive 1,275-years-old, three-story temple-palace of Santa Rosa Xtampak in Campeche, Mexico. The analysis of the 17 m high 50-room structure with two inner staircases revealed unusual construction principles and serious static problems preventing a planned high roof comb. The publication provides several architectural indications for different functions of the structure, which might also be used to study functions at other Maya buildings. This collection of papers on phrasal compounding is part of a bigger project whose aims are twofold: First, it seeks to broaden the typological perspective by providing data for as many different languages as possible to gain a better understanding of the phenomenon itself. Second, based on these data which clearly show interaction between syntax and morphology it aims to discuss theoretical models which deal with this kind of interaction in different ways. Models like Generative Grammar assume components of grammar and a clear-cut distinction between the lexicon (often including morphology) and grammar. Other models, like construction grammar, do not assume such components and are rather based on a lexicon including constructs. A comparison of these models on the basis of this phenomenon on the morphology-syntax interface makes it possible to assess their descriptive and explanatory power.

Three members of the Milan-born Angielini family have bequeathed plans and views of fortified places at the border to the Ottoman Empire around 1570, amongst them three maps of Vienna. This basis serves for an analysis of Vienna’s development into a fortress city. Written sources and archaeological evidence are also used, as are insights from environmental history. Early modern fortress-construction in theory and practice and the cartographic documentation of the Hungarian area and Vienna, both seen in a supraregional context, compose further important chapters of the book.

Different glue-free sheathing systems made of solid timber panels are developed within the scope of this dissertation. These systems are then evaluated by their usability as sheathing in shear walls based on common structural design principles. Therefore, different shear connectors are developed and tested in small-scale and large-scale experiments. Using computational model for the timber-frames examined in the experiments shear wall test are simulated and a design proposal is developed.

The volume presents the concluding architectural and structural research on this early Hellenistic tomb of a Diadochus, a monumental two-story construction with innovative design of building structure, façades and a peristasis, enclosing an unused courtyard. Pure proportions determined the modularly composed design, having been brought to perfection by numerous optical refinements. Innovative developments of construction techniques such as the utilisation of grout mortar indicate the forthcoming era and so do the new formal developments in the design of this mausoleum having grown out of late classical tradition.
